@Nicolbolas2 Strictly different, not strictly better. Overlord is better in some ways, mainly as a tribal deck. Sliver Queen functions very well as a combo deck. There are so many cards that go functionally infinite with it that it has near incomparable consistency.

@@benstafford8206 yeah, the problem is that this 'want to play magic' turns into "hey, stop interrupting my game so I can play my cards" so you actually have to not play what you want so the others can play. So funny how in the non-gameknights episode the professor jokingly said "hey, I didn't knew we were playing the 'lets not kill each other' game". Commander players usually think too much of this social aspect of the game.

Point taken. Social aspect will generally be more important simply bc you're more likely to play EDH with friends/acquaintances than other formats. Regardless, it is important to keep negative feelings about the game inside the game.

The basic Sliver Queen combo is Basal Sliver, Gemhide Sliver and Heart Sliver. You pay 2 to make a sliver token, tap it for mana, then sac it with the Basal Sliver ability. And then you're up 1 mana. And so, infinite mana. No need for Ashnod's Altar.

I have a friend in my play group who plays narset and I had detection tower in my deck so I removed the hexproof and used luminous bonds so they couldn't die but couldn't attack and they got locked out of the game

I do not know, I never felt Atraxi nor Animar as something that is brutally overwhelming. Essentially it all boils down how focused and cEDH like the decks are. I played against Prossh deck that was Kobold themed, had all the Kobold cards, etc. no real combo in there. I also have seen Derevi Bird Tribal. Sure these are harmless, but some Commanders are just not there to be built harmless, like Baral, Narset or Azami. Thrasios+Vial Smasher (banned in real life Duel Commander) is something really annoying or Selvala (the mono green one)

@@joeofthefallen It's very rare that I win with her, I don't have a lot of ramp spells so yes, when I can cast her, generally, I win, but it's hard for me to put her on the battlefield before turn 8. I succed one time to put it on turn 3 but it was just pure luck (I had the God's hand, all the Urza's land, Emrakul, a Sol Ring, a Quicksilver Amullet, and an Endless One), Turn 1 > Urza's Mine and Sol ring/Turn 2 > Urza's Power Plant and the Amulette/Turn 3 > Urza's Tower, Put Emra in the battlefield with the amulette, take my extra turn/Turn 4 > Eldrazi temple (That I drew the turn before), and Endless one, that came into play with 11 +1/+1 counters on it. And I spent the rest of the game just by annihilate my opponants's board and beat them with my Emra and Endless One. It was my biggest play in commander, but it happened just one time aha. But for my friends, it was cool, and they let me play it even if it's banned because they know how much I love the Eldrazi and they know that I'm bad to ramp lmao

Really control heavy decks, regardless of if they're monoblue or azorius or esper, is someone just playing solitaire and not letting anyone really play mtg anymore. It's just solidly annoying. You guys missed Maelstrom Wanderer. Probably the best ramp deck out there, "combos" with food chain. and even un-optimized or janky Wanderer decks are still a threat. There is no "Mine doesn't play that way", as the commander ALWAYS plays that way. I would build it, but I dare not make it. Not even to keep it safe. Understand, I would use this Deck from a desire to do good. But through me, it ...would wield a power too great and terrible to imagine.

When I first played EDH in 2010, my first deck was Scion, my second deck was Grand Arbiter...I didn't read much about the format, I was just told the rules by a friend and immediately knew which of my cards would make the best commanders. The decks I used that my group hated the most were actually my Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir Control, complete with Palinchron High Tide combo along with Future Sight. My other deck was my Doran deck...people don't like getting killed by walls.

Spore Frog was never a card my friends knew or cared about until Meren. :D But there are ways to counteract Meren and other graveyard shenanigans decks.

Edric and Krenko are my most hated commanders. A well-built Krenko deck pumps out so many goblins before your opponents can find answers, and Edric can control the board with counterspells, graveyard recursion, and extra turns to ensure damage goes through each time (death by a thousand cuts). I do have a Grand Arbiter deck with two win conditions, one being Approach of the Second Sun and Azor's Elecutors. At least with those two, it doesn't drag the game, unless I choose it to be 😁

My most hated commander (and associated deck) is Teferi, the mono-blue walker. A person at my locals runs the deck, and any card that isn't a combo piece or basic land is a counterspell. It's absolutely the worst to play against, despite his insistence that it's fun (which it is the farthest thing from), and because of it I've altered 1/10th of my EDH to hate against blue and countering.

Teferi is the closest I've gotten into cEDH, I only pull it out unless the group decides we want to end a game really fast. Or if someone gets cocky. Best thing you can do is tell this person how you feel and if it comes down to it, don't play with them anymore.

Counterspells are tempo advantage, but card disadvantage. If everyone beats up on the counterspell guy, they run out of counters and lose.

Forest, Sol ring, grim monolith, pass.. mountain, channel the suns, Scion, keep Sol untapped for protection if needed, pass.. land, attack player most likely to board wipe, likely no blocks because it's turn 3, tap Sol, Ur-Dragon goes to grave, Scion becomes copy, uncaged fury, kill player.... it's a thing i used to do with my Scion deck, because I was running a lot of ways to manage that/similar combo at the latest turn 6 which could then be repeated through other means

A buddy of mine has a Zur deck. Zur is there to tutor the real commander of the deck: Astral Slide. It's a cycling blink deck. It's a pretty fun deck. As far as hated commanders, anything with a very linear strategy is generally pretty unfun to play against: Yisan, mono-green Selvala, Sliver Overlord, Mizzix, new Jhoira. All just basically combo decks that you either have to deal with early and then they scoop because their combo failed, or lose in 4 turns and never get to settle in to a commander game. This one guy in our play group plays combo decks pretty much exclusively and has no threat assessment to speak of: he burns removal on random unimportant things because he doesn't want to not use that mana. He'll screw over the rest of the table with poor threat assessment and when people scoop in frustration he considers it a win because "what I did made you leave" so he sees it as a viable strategy. About 75% of our playgroup just won't play with him anymore and the rest just focus him out of games. Combo players are irritating.

If anyone is anti blue, they just don't know what playing around blue is. Blue is hated because counter magic mainly. My Rowan and Will deck has only 7 counterspells, and my friends say I always have an answer even though I don't.

@@RyeFields That's the problem with selective memory: we do remember the *one* time our spell got countered but forget the dozens of spells we resolved before and after. And a smart blue player holds their answers for the right threats. So of course they feel like they "always have an answer". Personally I just dislike the concept of countermagic in general because from a design perspective, I feel there is nothing one can do against it except join them and there is nothing else with an equivalent. And you saying you "only" play 7 means that on average your deck has one every ~15 cards, aka you should draw at least one every game, therefore you "always have one" isn't actually that far of.

I usually don't use them because I tap out for big flashy stuff. I just find that there are ways around it and wizards just needs to have answers to counter magic in every color

normally i would steer clear of mono blue permission, but i have just returned to a LGS that has Competitive decks ruining the causals time. So i built a Baral deck, used politics. "I will lock down the competitive deck, leave me alone and swing in. When they are dead, i will scoop." Works surprisingly well. Hate being forced to play this type of deck, but it shows the competitive players what it is like for the rest of us when they combo out turn 4 while the rest of us wait for the inevitable end.

I took the white-blue-red-green commander from the partner set, the one that lets everyone draw or ramp, and turned it into an eldrazi deck. Although it usually wins with an insurrection or two. Group hug commanders are fun. Hate the player not the game

My first time pulling out my mizzix deck (now creatureless melek) my friend was playing the group hug 4 color Commander. When I started comboing he dropped a fog effect that stopped spell damage as well. Needless to say I killed everyone with blue sun's zenith lol

A lot of people don't like graveyard strategies (I do), but most of them can be shut down with various cheap artifacts, a tapped land and a free enchantment. Options for every colour. If I win a game based on my graveyard, I will certainly loose the 2nd as my opponents sideboard in some easy hate. Would like to see the same cards printed for Stax and extra turns. I feel like the players playing these architypes don't have to contend with hate. At the moment, the best way to avoid losing to extra turns combos twice in one night is to go home - how is that good for your magic night?

The term I think you guys are looking for with the sort of deck that Narset and Mizzix lead to are decks where "players take turns having fun" instead of everyone sort of having fun together. Either the player runs away with the game and people just golf clap, or that person gets shut down via their commander being removed on sight; either way, either the player or the rest of the table has fun, but not both.

I am so sorry DJ. I just built a Uril deck (spotted the beauty in a singles case, and Naya is my jam) and my play group is so mad about him. Turn one mana dork, turn two ramp, and the ramp or rocks into Uril followed by dirt cheap auras that are basically useless in any other circumstance (ie. Prophetic Ravings or Murder Investigation) and splash evergreens until i can smack someone for commander or get perma board wiped.

Allan Cerda most of the meren decks I’ve played against are all grindy, value heavy ones. I’ve seen a couple Sidisi decks that bust out a huge thing on turn two though. Saw a guy reanimate Jin Gitaxias turn 2 once, it was super lame!

Honestly, i don't think Derevi's optimal config is a stax deck... A commander with SUCH an ETB effect, SUCH a potential for tap/untap shenanigans (Josh's Emmara deck feels on the rise :P) and SUCH a way to cheat commander tax so it can do its game unlimitedly, has a lot more of combo to it than stax... That's why i usually refer to it as the devil's pet owl or something like that. It's actually THE one deck i'd hate the most to face on an EDH table.

I’ve got a Narset deck that’s filled up with equipment, mind controls, board wipes, and token generation. It’s not uncommon that I run people over with a mob of spirits, goblins, minotaurs, knights, and birds. It doesn’t run any extra turn or phase spells, nor does it run a single creature card. Ends up pretty fun to play.

Yeah, I feel like Eminence was a mistake as a mechanic. People don't even cast the commander, they just use the eminence for grindy advantage until they've taken over the game. I once milled out a guy playing Inalla around turn 25 (wasn't a mill deck, just happened to draw - and resolve - my mill card) and everyone else at the table cheered.

Its the idea that if you play enought games against zurr its the same, dam, enchatments, every, single, time. I built myself a Shu deck and it is absolutely brutal 1v1. Brutal to the point my friend straight up told me not to play it again. But, in a 4 player game, I have yet to win with it. Almost always gonna take someone out early on, but as soon as I do I’m Public Enemy #1 and get wiped out of the game. He’s easily dealt with in multiplayer.

In my playgroup, it used to be my Norin deck. Sometimes it locks the game down so long due to triggers I can't control. I enjoyed seeing them suffer. Now I just wanted to win so I turned the deck into Purphoros and replaced every single group slug card with goblins that make more goblins and any thing I could grab that could let me crap out more tokens because I wanted to win. First game day with him and I won both times I used the deck, by turn 6 the second time. I think I successfully painted a BIGGER target on my head by switching up the deck.

as for commanders I dislike? gosh, that's a tough one. New Jhoira is kinda annoying because most people are just going to play cherios and cheapo mana rocks to try and Lab Maniac out similar to Azami. when I first started really playing commander, I really didn't know how important it was to have answers to graveyard nonsense and as a result stuff like Meren and Karador frustrated me. Muldrotha is kinda there for me because of how pushed she is. Although a non-issue now, Leavold is a big reason I don't regularly go to LGSes. seriously, who the heck stomps someone who you LITEARALLY JUST SAW BUY A PRECON BECAUSE THEY'VE NOT TRIED COMMANDER BEFORE with that no-fun garabage?!? FInally, and most importantly... how did nobody come up with Oloro? I get it, Life gain isn't super effective, but GOSH Oloro is just free stuff and usually played to draw out the game until a felidar soverign or Aetherflux Resivoir or something dumb can come down.

Haven't seen anyone mention it but oooooh do I hate Inalla immensely. If you don't kill the player immediately and he gets Venser in hand... woof, really bad things start to happen. Add in things like Panharmonicon, Cloudstone Curio, Conjurer's Closet, Naban... with just one of those, the number of triggers and stack orientation get intense, and usually end up with the rest of the table wondering when it's going to be able to profitably play Magic again. And it's capable of a number of infinite combos, just based on Wizard creatures alone. If you ask my playgroup, I'm sure they will cite three of my commanders: OG Jhoira, OG Kozilek, and Brago. Also: News flash, no one likes Meren, but there are so many BG(x) decks that do similar - and worse - things that most Meren decks (at least the grindy ones) are more of an annoyance than something that gets hated or feared.

I have a funny Prossh story. I built my first commander deck and my card shop needed another player in their commander tournament. One of my buddies bought me in. My first deck was Rasaketh the Foul Blooded. So I sit down in my four man pod and the person who bought me in and the person who gave me Rasaketh where accross the table from me and another person who would later be a friend. My win con was Reassembling skeleton+Ashbod's Alter+Black Market+Zulaport Cutthroat. Of course it takes time to set up (now I just use Pitiless Plunderer). I go get skeleton using Rasaketh and some one had played Prossh. Both I and the Prossh player had Butcher of Maliker down. The person next to me had Kiora's emblem and had 4 krakens. So the Prossh player sacs a dude. We all sac and then my butcher triggers ect ect. I was just reanimateing the skeleton and everyone else ran out of creatures. Black Market had 40 counters on it. I then learned that sanquine Bond and Blood Tribute kicked kills players. I won that round and then I had to face the person that got me into commander and I lost. I came in second in that tournament though. The Prossh player didn't realize I would out creature him. Also the deck had a good 19 filler rat colonies.

Sounds like a lot of this "hate" towards Commanders comes from people building them in a manor that doesn't fit the feel of the table. Seems to me you don't like the people building the deck instead the commaders and are just frustrated that so many people go for the same sort of builds. Sort of a bread and butter issue for EDH though, since there is no way reasonable way to match powerlevels in EDH when not playing competitively. Funny thing, in cEDH tables seeing GAAIV, Scion or Prossh would be down right delightful when there really is very little reason to not play Partners. Seeing anything other than Partners would be a delight. Tymna is a horribly broken utility card draw engine in 4 (sometimes 3) colors and Thrasios is an "I win" -button. This itself isn't an issue since well, variance is still kinda there with Tymna/X, Thrasios/X and TymnaThrasios, but it starts becoming an issue when every deck starts to polarize to either playing Thrasios Scepter with Ad Nauseam, Tymna Fast Combo with Ad Nauseam or Flash Hulk decks with Thrasios/x or ThrasiosTymna. I don't play cEDH anymore because I got tired of card advantage not meaning anything and it's just being a race to the finish. Every game has either Ad Nauseam or FlashHulk, every game will definitely have partners. Can't really fault them either, since ThrasiosTymna is the best deck in the format and I too have that in paper. Would be unreasonable to ask them to downgrade since that would not be cEDH then. Only thing I could do was stop playing, so I did.

@Eroz Ghost cEDH is a format for people who get no fun out of doing something unless it's well and properly. Casual EDH is fun and all, but it's kind of half-assy way to play MTG, since the goal of a game of magic is to win, and if you aren't doing that, you are kinda playing "mock-magic" since you ignore the #1 goal of the game. The game is supposed to end and someone is supposed to win, and dancing around that fact by playing worse cards and making gameplay rules is kinda, eh, childish. Casual EDH is way too touchy-feely for my taste since you have to draw lines in the sand about what is ok and what is not. I rather just sit in and know that everybody is trying their best with laser focus than get dirty looks for resolving a Yaw-Will for example. I rather know what sort of game it is going in. I much more prefer the atmosphere in competitive tables because of that fact. Also, if you have ever played a game called Dota 2, you should be familiar the fact that if everything is OP, nothing really is. If everybody can win as early as turn 2 onwards, the wins get spread out evenly. In cEDH circles we have a saying: "If your win percent is more than 30% (since it's played in 4-man pods), go find better opponents".

I run a few tribal decks, they have synergy, they can win, and they are efficient without needing to exploit a card or a couple of cards to beat people by round 3. To me, what is the point of spending hours, sometimes days on a deck with a 100 cards, if you're only going to play a few of them or never get to storm off. Grishath is one of my commanders, he is definitely slower, but when he storms off it is a pay off. Instead of sitting around twiddling my thumbs up my ass as some guy is going for some infinite combo bullshit. Might as well not run themes, might not as well run anything beside the way the cEDH dictates a deck be won, fast bullshit, instant wins.

@@WulfLovelace See you seem to ignore the fact that there are people like me who always want to play optimally, and if "optimal" is not fun or interesting, it ruins the fun. I would not touch a tribal deck with a 10 foot pole because it goes against my mindset of disregarding flavor and price in seek of victory and competition between likeminded people

​@@B1gLupu Winning is fine. But I don't think it's fun for anyone, like the video states where you see a certain commander and go, might as well not play. To me going Exquisite Blood and Sanguine Bond turn 3 for infinite disregards other people and their desire to have fun. You basically take everyone else's enjoyment away because you want to win.

As a GAAIV player, I find him a fun commander to build around. Problem is - most people tend to focus so much on the tax effects, that the situation described is exactly what ends up happening - no one can play anything because of the tax effects, and the only player who can actually play stuff, just plays more tax effects, that don't get him any closer to victory. The way my deck is actually built, has 3 interchangable commanders (or even 4, and soon 5, with the new Lavinia), and I'll use GAAIV in 2 player games, along with nimble obstructionist, thalia, and other tempo cards, to power out a threat before my opponent, and win with it, but in multiplayer games, I'll just switch to Brago, or Hanna as my commander, and either blink, or recur artifacts/enchantments.

My Narset deck actually doesn't run the things mentioned here. It's actually full of enchantments and artifacts that affect either positively, like howling mine, or negatively, like pyrostatic pillar, everyone including myself.
