Still life is unique, it does a lot of things, and is flawless in all of them, the beauty, the anger, the sadness, the spooky parts, how the story is narrated, the concept, is something they never could repeat. But I love MAYH too, I like how raw and doomy is at times, but for me the story flow is bad, the climax happens almost in the half, so it drags in the final section having like three songs trying to be the "ending", so after demon of the fall It feels deeply disjointed for me, specially considering how good it starts. Still life fixes this, by having one of their most intense songs before the ending track resolving the tension in a genious way. Ghost reveries is the album I find a little overrated by them, the sound pallete is more interesting, sure, but it lacks the strong atmosphere and feel of blackwater park, and speaking of sound Watershed is better in every aspect, is more brutal, more proggy, the ballads are better as ballads, and the brutal songs hits more hard. But I agree with Tool, I miss the days of Undertow/Aenima when the band used to write good straightforward songs, without making it so strange and complicated. I still can appreciate it and I quite like that direction, but I prefer more singable stuff.

Thanks for doing these videos. Makes for good discussion. Two albums you mentioned that I have a slightly different take on: 1. Tool "10,000 Days" - It's perhaps overrated as far as being worshiped by Tool fans. The general critical consensus on the album I have seen is that it's a good but not great record. I think the same of it. 2. Venom "Black Metal" - I have the opposite perspective. If any Venom album is overrated, I would say it is Welcome to Hell. I like it, and it is definitely raw. Almost too raw to be listenable. Black Metal is still plenty raw , but at least the songs are more decipherable. It's the Ace of Spades for Venom. It's consistent all the way through. All killer no filler.

As much as I think 10,000 Days was what started the halt of Tools old evolutionary nature, it was my introduction to their music so it's still pretty special to me. I think most of the tracks are solid but it just doesn't flow all that interestingly to me, the closing track seems pointless, ending on Right In Two just makes so much more sense to me. I still don't know how I feel about Intension. I wanted to like it but I find it uninteresting. I enjoy everything else enough, I just think the album suffers from having to live up to the astronomical highs of their prior work. I also find the album to be a lot less grandiose than the prior two, which it doesn't have to be, but that is something that really sold the flow previously. Reflection and Third Eye are amazing climaxes. I dunno, I do very fondly remember listening to 10,000 Days for the first time and getting lost in the atmosphere, it was a KZbin upload of the album and I wasn't able to sift track to track so I just let it flow, it was a pretty magical experience I wish I could get back.

I forgot if you touched on these in the previous video but here’s two modern metal albums that I found pretty overhyped and overrated though I still did enjoy them. The first one I’m gonna talk about is Eternal Blue by Spiritbox. I think it is a very solid debut album, and it really shows this band’s potential, but it also falls into a lot of modern metalcore tropes and cliches and has some filler tracks. I remember when it first came out seeing a lot of metal fans and especially the vinyl community LOOSING IT over this album, and after loving Holy Roller I ordered the album on vinyl expecting the rest of the album to be just as good and when I heard it, yes, it’s really good but I really don’t understand the sheer amount of hype that this album got. Next album I’m gonna talk about is A Different Shade Of Blue by Knocked Loose. Once again I’m a big fan of this band, I also own this album on vinyl but I just don’t think it’s one of the best modern metal albums of all time like people were saying. Like Spiritbox this band is really big in the vinyl community but I heard this album all the way through before I got my copy (that’s what I usually do, eternal blue was an exeption) and while I was blown away by the intensity at first listen and thought it was amazing, with every listen I give this album the cracks in the songwriting start to show. I kinda find it to have a lot of filler, a lot of repetitive lyrics, and like I said though I think it’s really good I think it’s not as good as people say. Still enjoyed it but I don’t get just the pure worship this album gets, it isn’t the second coming of Christ it’s just a solid metal album.

Somehow lost my first copy on a trip to Pensacola. Got another copy at some point and then eventually the CD. Perhaps I've listened to it too much in the past or I've just outgrown it but it's been probably 18 years since I've listened to it all the way through. Even by today's standards it still has great production but there's a lot of filler tracks on it. However, there are some overlooked songs on it that get overshadowed by it's hits.

Metallica: Agree Dream Theatre: Partially Agree Tool: FINALLY someone agrees Slipknot: not a fan, so no opinion BTBAM: same as Slipknot Six Feet Under: also no opinion Everything else isn't "overrated" in the slightest. This just sounds like you're throwing the word around without doing much research on any of these albums. Still Life, if anything, is UNDERRATED. Sure, you may not like it as much as their other albums, but it was their only record on that one label, meaning it didn't sell anywhere near as well as their other albums, so it's definitely not overrated. The other ones I've literally never heard anybody talk about. ESPECIALLY Untouchables. Nobody overrates Untouchables. If anything, Follow The Leader is overrated for its inconsistent tracklist in my opinion. I do agree that Issues is their best album, though.

Agree 100% with My Arms Your Hearse being superior in that era of Opeth’s career, both as a concept and in the way the music twists and turns so surprisingly. Here are some of my picks: 1. Mars Volta - “De-Loused in the Commatorium” - It’s a kickass album with alot of layers, but still could be improved upon in the sense that it needed a bit more breathing space. “Frances the Mute”, the very next album shows evolution in spades in comparison. 2. Deftones - “Diamond Eyes” - Most would consider it like their biggest return to form, and I can partially agree. It had so many awesome singles coming from it, but as an album experience can feel a bit monotonous seeing the deep cuts not straying very far from the chugging formula (although “This Place is Death” is an impecable outro).

Opeth: Definitely agree with My Arms, Your Hearse over Still Life, but creepy Opeth has always been my favourite Opeth (my all-time fave is Ghost Reveries so I'm sure my opinion to many fans is moot). BTBAM: The Great Misdirect is the album that finally got me to "get" the band after initially bouncing off both Alaska and Colors, so I'm definitely biased towards it. To me it has some of their most cohesive songwriting despite all the weird genre changes throughout, and I'll argue til my dying day that Swim to the Moon's intro is the best "moment" out of any of their songs ever. Six Feet Under: Honestly I don't even agree with Haunted being their best and that's as someone who isn't a fan of the band at all. Undead has easily some of their most killer riffs and drumming courtesy of Rob Arnold and Kevin Talley respectively, though even those get dragged down by Barnes' weak vocals. Carcass: To me anyone who loves Reek that much is also someone who still thinks Scum or FETO are Napalm Death's best albums: grindcore fanatics who only want the grit and the dirt and none of the evolution or songwriting. Nothing wrong with that, but I don't remotely agree with them. Slipknot: Nostalgia's playing into it here but the singles from Volume 3 remain my favourites from the band, even if I think the non-single songs are kinda weak. I get people love the chaos of the self-titled and the heaviness of Iowa but I dunno, to me this is where Slipknot learn the value of a good hook and Corey gets to really come into his own as a vocalist. Venom: Welcome to Hell is so much more memorable and straight up fun than Black Metal it's not even funny. Metallica: Firmly in the "Black Album is overrated" camp here and while I actually never thought to compare the two, Dirt is absolutely an album that takes similar ideas and just nails them so much better. I'll take "Them Bones" or "Rooster" over "Enter Sandman" or "Nothing Else Matters" any day of the week. Solid list overall, I enjoy the perspectives and explanations even when I disagree. Off the top of my head if I had to pick a spicy take for an overrated album, it'd have to be Bonded By Blood by Exodus. I get why people love it given its impact and how Baloff was a big force in the early thrash scene, but honestly he's the worst vocalist Exodus has ever had, the songwriting is decent but primitive, and I actually hate the production. Also, pardon the novel of a comment. lol

I've recently heard Venom's Black Metal, I agree it gets way overhyped with the whole coining the name of the subgenre, but it really is a very raw and grim thrash metal album, what I like is the swagger it has, Welcome to Hell is much more of a rocking party album in the vein of Motorhead and other NWOBHM bands of the time, but Black Metal is where they really locked into their signature evil thrash sound. I've already said and stand by Megadeth's good albums being overrated, but an album by a completely different band that I also think is overrated is Voorsoom's (the misspelling is for this comment to not vanish) "Det som engang var", in terms of black metal, everything in that album has been done better since it came out, Enslaved's debut and sophomore did that grim and cold keyboard driven style of black metal better.

Everyone has got their reasons for referring certain albums from bands over others, I'd say. Much of the time it has to do with where you were in your life when you first heard a record. In fact, how you feel about an album really does usually have more to do with teh audience than with the record itself. That's not to say videos like this aren't fun though. So a few comments. Opeth: I got into them when Morningrise came out, and I could say everything you just said applied to Still Life...about My Arms. I think it's fine, but I definitely prefer Still Life. I think there are some weird things about My Arms that signify the band was having a rough time. Don't forget they'd just gotten a new rhythm section -- I don't think Lopez had really connected with the band yet and while Mendez was in teh band, that's not even his bass parts on the record. Sure, "Demons of the Fall" is a live staple with good reason -- but for me, Still Life *is* the more consistent -- and the last two songs are among the best. Six Feet Under: I am not a fan, but I'll tell you who likes haunted, and then you'll know why. It's Obituary fans. I think a better choice than Butchered at Birth would have been The End Complete from obituary. Alan West was the guitarist on that SFU album and it's basically leftover Obituary riffs. I don't think it sounds at all like Cannibal Corpse. Carcass: Reek may not be their best but it's the classic grindcore album. The classic grind fans are going to love this one. I personally like how rough it sounds. They'd already progressed far beyond this point by Symphonies, so if you want to hear Carcass doing classic grind, Reek is your album, and I really think that's all there is to it. metallica: Don't know many metal fans who love the black album. General rock /radio fans, sure. That was their big breakout album. But rightly or wrongly it's considered a sellout in the metal scene at large and especially when it came out it got plenty of hate. So I don't see you getting much crap for this choice. Venom: Love Black metal, and always have. Don't think has anything to do with the name. it's got great riffs and great attitude and immensely fun songs. You don't have to like it. The singles from around this time were great too. It's a top metal album for me. Doesn't have to be for you.

I love 10,000 Days, but I agree that the album has wayyyyy to much filler. I end up skipping roughly 20 minutes of the album every time I listen to it. Dang, I definitely disagree on Still Life. It’s definitely in the upper echelon of Opeth’s music for me. I agree that the first four Korn albums are by far the best, but I still consider Untouchables apart of the classic era of Korn. I’d agree it’s a B tier Korn album though. Never listened to the BTBAM album. Haunted is fine. I enjoy it, but don’t think it’s necessarily essential. I love 10,000 days. It’s probably my second favorite Tool album behind Lateralus. I’m more of a prog guy than a metal guy. Def understand not enjoying it as much of your more of a metal guy than prog. I never got into the grindcore era of Carcass. I’m pretty unfamiliar with grind in general outside of scum. I like Vol. 3, but would never chose to listen to it over the debut or Iowa. I think Slipknot is honestly the most over rated metal band of all time. I always thought octavarium was over rated. I feel like millennials gravitate toward it because it was most of our entryways into DT. I’d rank it hard in the middle of DT’s discography. I love Black Metal. Gotta disagree with you on that one. I agree that Welcome to Hell is probably the better Venom album though. The Black album is my least favorite of the first 5 Metallica albums, but it’s still good. If there's any album from Between The Buried And Me that I find "overrated", it's COMA ECLIPTIC. Power to people who enjoy it and feel it's a masterpiece, BUT I DON'T and I found it their worst album since their Self-Titled when I first heard it. I gave it several shots over the following years, hoping I would get it eventually, but I never made it past Track 4 in any of those tries because the songwriting always bored me and induced yawning.

Hard agree on the opeth, my arms is a much superior album. I never thought of untouchables as over rated though. I remember it getting panned at the time and the press calling it the end of Korn. I personally really like it and think it's one of their heaviest albums. That and issues are my joint favourite korn albums. The deep cuts on the black album are some of my favourite Metallica songs. The album is beyond over rated now though, it's on another level.

Haunted is overrated for being like a 6/10 but I will agree with the people that say it’s there best album because I can somewhat argue that haunted is not completely dog shit covered and maggots and vomit unlike every other six feet under album but haunted and six feet under dose not get a pass from that like Chris Barnes is a big asshole and has probably made some of the worst death metal I ever heard and I would never say six feet under is better then cannibal corpse, deicide, death, macabre, napalm death, dying fetus, Cryptopsy, suffocation, Nile, gorgasm, hate enernal, sanguisugabogg, exhumed, pungent stench, and list can go on forever

True, saying an album is overrated doesn't mean you dislike it. I do agree with 10 Thousand Days on this list. Still a good album though. A few that come to mind for me are: Metallica - Black album (Great album, but RTL, MOP, and AJFA are better IMO!) Judas Priest - British Steel (Great album, but they just had other albums around this time I find to be a bit stronger.) Iron Maiden - The Number of The Beast (Again great album, but they've had better albums from the 80's IMO.) Black Sabbath - The entire Dio era (Dio is a good vocalist, but I noticed he gets a lot of hype. I definitely prefer the Ozzy stuff from Sabbath.) Death - The Sound of Perseverance (Death has no bad album, and this one is no exception, but I personally don't understand why many place this close to the top as one of their best albums.)

Since this is part 2 of the most overrated metal albums of all time, I’m going to share some other albums that I didn’t post under the first video: 1. Disturbed - ‘The Sickness’: In my opinion, Disturbed would get better once they stray away from this outdated nu-metal sound that they had on the first album. With that being said, “The Game” is one of my favorite songs from the band and I dig a couple other tracks like “Want” and “Stupify” strangely enough, but that’s probably about it (I could go without ever hearing the overplayed “Down with the Sickness” ever again). ‘Believe’ and ‘Indestructible’ are the ones I like the most when it comes to Disturbed. 2. Korn - ‘Untouchables’: I agree with most of your points on this one, so you already covered what I had to say. “The self titled, ‘Issues’, ‘Follow the Leader’, ‘Life is Peach’ and even ‘The Nothing’ are all better than that hodgepodge. 3. Evanescence - ‘Fallen’… or actually all of Evanescence really. I could never get into this band. I prefer Lacuna Coil and Within Temptation more when it comes to this sort of gothic-tinged alternative metal sound. 4. Def Leppard - ‘Hysteria’: I don’t hate this record like a lot of metal elitists out there. It was one of the first rock records I’ve ever listened to, but it has not aged all that well over time lol. There’s still some bangers like “Rocket”, “Gods of War “, and the title track, but I would recommend ‘Pyromania’ and my personal favorite Def Leppard record ‘High n Dry’ over this album. Hell, I would also choose ‘On Through the Night’ over ‘Hysteria’ too. 5. Judas Priest - ‘British Steel’: Kind of what I said about Iron Maiden’s ‘Number of the Beast’, I can see why it’s considered a classic, but is it really their best album? It starts off strong with the first 4 songs and finishes off nicely with the last 2 songs, but unfortunately, this album suffers from a weak mid portion with 3 filler tracks in a row (“United”, “You Don’t Have to Be Old to Be Wise”, “Living After Midnight”). I would put ‘Screaming for Vengeance’ (my favorite), ‘Defenders of the Faith’, ‘Stained Class’, ‘Painkiller’, ‘Sad Wings of Destiny’, ‘Sin After Sin’, ‘Firepower’, and ‘Hell Bent for Leather’ over that album.

Opeth - Ghost Reveries; this is an awesome album, but there are 6 albums that are even better like Deliverance. Panopticon - Kentucky; one of their worst. This album is a mess and has trouble holding my attention, and I miss the post-rock sections from other albums. Collapse did the folk stuff better. Periphery - Periphery III; still an 8/10, but it's easily their worst. It feels long, some songs overstay their welcome, the riffs are less interesting, not to mention this has some of my least favorite songs like Remain Indoors (it's not horrible, but it feels misplaced and I skip it 80% of the time). I prefer Periphery I, while it's even longer, there's not a dull moment on there. Trivium - In Waves; solid album, not many standout tracks, and the thrash from their first four albums is nonexistent. I prefer Ember to Inferno, it's thrashy and the songs are more memorable.
