I'm a cyclist and can get very tight in the hips. This exercise is a favourite of mine especially because of it's ability to stretch out one hip as you strengthen the other leg. I look forward to trying the variations you have shown. Thanks.

Bulgarian split squat variation - One path to continuing playing sports for decades! From you higher-level of knowledge, any downsides to this variation? Good video
@MovewithDrMike2 ай бұрын
Thanks for stopping by to watch this one and I appreciate you commenting! I really don’t see many downsides… this definitely can be more challenging if you lack single leg balance but you can easily support yourself assisting with your arms. Such a powerful exercise and can challenge your leg muscles in so many ways!

Happy to se this video. I had forgotten the exercise. My balance is way off. I think it's mostly due to sitting too much, and getting old. Anyways ... this is a very good way to strengthen and improve balance safely. Thanks

nice. i love doing these with the TRX because of a couple of reasons. one as you said, i get a stretch on the leg that's in the strap, second because i can't generate force with the back leg, i connect well with the working leg. and of course because of the instability i get to also work on that.

What is the ideal distance beetween the feet in doing split squats? Thanks
@MovewithDrMike2 ай бұрын
Thanks for stopping by to watch! Great question! I would say that depending leg length everyone’s distance might look a little different. Ideally you should try to keep the distance that will allow your knees to both bend at about a 90 degree angle at the bottom of the movement. Hope that helps!

2 times a week, along with sumo squats and Cossack squats. I do work in dumbbells into this routine, just not the high reps 6 to 15 reps

What about adding weight like Dumbbells or Kettlebells? I'm surprised that wasn't mentioned
@MovewithDrMike2 ай бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to watch! Youre right! Adding load to this exercise will make it more difficult but the focus of this video was to go over exactly how to perform the exercise and plenty variations to use! Some people will indeed be challenged with just bodyweight alone and other advanced levels will need to add some weight! Dumbbells and kettlebells is one of the best ways to do this! I agree ☝️ with you!

@@MovewithDrMike thanks doctor what the difference between split leg & B stand
@MovewithDrMike2 ай бұрын
Both variations are very similar. The main difference between a split stance and a B-stance is the distance between the feet. In the split stance, one foot is in front of the other, but further apart. The knees are often bent at a 90/90 degree angle at the bottom of the movement. With the B-stance, one foot is in front of the other, with the back foot slightly behind the front foot. The big toe of the back foot is even with the heel of the front foot. Hope that helps!

Isnt this a lunge movement?
@MovewithDrMike2 ай бұрын
Great question! Although it looks similar a split squat is not a lunge. A split squat is a static exercise where your feet stay on the floor, while a lunge is a dynamic exercise where you step forward, backward, or sideways. Thank you for taking the time to watch !
@lymedog31762 ай бұрын
Why don’t you put your front foot on a slant board and go knee over toe… it’s a better stretch and muscle builder.
@MovewithDrMike2 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment and I agree using a slant board is a great variation when you want to focus on quadricep loading;however, I prefer this variation to load the hips more. Thanks for taking the time to watch this one!
