I bank with Halifax which I think is part of The Bank of Scotland. OP's husband and his mother are financially abusing OP. The update is frightening, they are trying to get complete control over OP bit I am pleased to hear she has found out their plan. She is being very sensible by quietly making copies of all her documents and also making plans to leave him. The mother sounds a bit like the notorious "Ma Baker" who led her son's on crime sprees across the United States. She might not be quite as bad as that but she is encouraging her son to take control of all the finances and not allow OP to have any access to her own money. Trying to open a joint account with OP behind her back is a huge red flag and I am sure the bank would insist that OP must also be there, in person. I hope OP can get as far away from them as possible.

Hopefully, once she is out & safe, far from him & his reach; he'll reflect & get himself serious professional help. Undoubtedly, his mother is a root for all this & she should be more severely punished for this; nothing excuses this guys abuse of his partner. He will certainly never change voluntarily, as long as he can freely continue to abuse anyone with his sphere of influence. Until he stops abusing others, I've no sympathy for him. He should have realized based on his own experiences as a victim, that he had no right to abuse anyone else. Many have suffered far worse but never offended. The only 1 really feel sympathy for is the kid & that's why I want the mom to get her stuff in order far from her abusers. Frankly, mom put herself in this situation by ignoring reality & only hope is facing reality. They both brought a kid into this mess, now mom needs to do her duty by this kid & keep them as far away from the kid as possible. She does not get to keep ignoring reality while the poor kid is abused under her nose. Both are adults & can make choices, the kid has no say in anything. The kid is at the whims of an insane abusive grandmother & father while their mother is too busy ignoring reality to protect the kid from them. There's no reason that she should have stayed after the 1st update & staying after the 2nd is wilfully allowing her kid to be abused.

I'm glad OP is taking the steps to protect herself and child because it will likely get worse. The apple truly didn't fall that far from the tree. I know of someone whose husband landed them into bankruptcy because he wanted a lavish lifestyle but was irresponsible=with the household funds and refused to work for the lavish image (always got fired or quit). So she started saving money to make an exit which he found then said "I would get half of this" if they were to get a divorce (at the time she hadn't filed yet). This man didn't love her but used her to appease his family - he's closeted and was cheating on her during their marriage, lied to the kids about why they got divorced then remarried another woman who doesn't know he's closeted but needed a green card and treated the kids poorly. Recently he almost tanked one of their adult children's credit but thankfully they realized he had been brainwashing and alienating them from their mother so he wasn't able to manipulate them anymore.

OP needs to get notarised/certified copies of her important documents, as just digital copies may not be enough. A police officer or JP can do it, usually for nothing, especially if the circumstances are explained. Or maybe she could replace the originals where they are stashed away with photocopies, so they don't immediately notice the originals are gone. Original documents should be left with a trustworthy person like the friend who has her bank card, not anywhere on the premises. Can she get a locker somewhere to stash her GO bag? So she can just walk out as she stands with the baby if it comes down to it... She also needs to get screen shots of those chats between the SO and his appalling mother as evidence, if at all possible. She's got her head on straight despite the really frightening situation, so I commend her.

I am honestly scared for OP. I hope that her husband and MIL don't murder her. There are too many of these stories where that happens. Never tell an abusive partner that you are leaving him with your child. Just leave and hide.

I'm worried that OP and her daughter's life is in danger, not just her finances. This is extremely scary and I really hope and pray that she was able to get away and is currently somewhere safe. Sending out prayers and positive thoughts to this OP.

Always keep copies of important documents (if possible) somewhere else safe such as a family friend/your parents, a safe, your job, hidden in your car, etc ect. I hope we get an update on this story.

I have never commented before but I am extremely concerned for this OP. I have worked in family violence for years and when the perpetrator realises that the victim-survivor is planning to or trying to leave, even if there has “only” been financial abuse, she enters an extremely dangerous time - statistically this is when she is MOST at risk of being murdered. So I would recommend she contact her local family violence crisis service as soon as possible to help her and her baby leave safely, and for them to stay safe until she is able to carry out her plan to leave. I am happy to share some safety tips if that is helpful but am aware that the legalities change between different countries.

"I know no murder is going on here." You say that, but behavior like this is a strong indicator that it may escalate that way. I hope she got out and is safe

It’s stories like this that make me glad the internet is easily available. Without knowing what her options were, OP would have been pushed into financial abuse despite her misgivings. OP isn’t stupid, just outnumbered, but now she’s got hundreds of people giving her advice.

My husband and his family are bad with money. Always lived comfortable didn't have to worry about spending. MiL always tries to push my boundaries with spending but luckily my husband has been so receptive to my more frugal ways especially with how hard finances have been lately. If it went like this story I'd have fecked off too. It's so heartbreaking to see someone in OPs position but so encouraging to see her get out asap. ♡

No. You DON'T open a joint account, and you tell momma that she starts paying you back and butt out.

Story 1: The woman who committed identity theft and the guy hiding spending from his wife are not people I'd take financial advice from. Good on OP for hiding her bank card. My guess is they know her credit is good, so they want the joint account to raise their line of credit.

This story is horrifying. I hope she kept her plans to leave quiet until she was already out and safe. If she has the messages between those two monsters, she should report them to the police or whoever.

Happily married near 20 years. No joint account, no credit card sharing, even properly has agreed shared ownership. If there's a situation, and it happens, it's a loan and it's repaid. Gifts are different. Never blindly give anyone control over your finances no matter how many stars are in your eyes. Stand, don't fall in love.

People planning to leave an abusive relationship are advised to leave their get out bag with a friend and also realise that the most dangerous time is when they are planning to leave. Please be safe
