I still can't grasp anime having "seasons". I kinda stopped following new anime some years ago, but when I was more of an enthusiast every anime was either this one block of episodes that told a complete story or had sequels, but those where treated like new shows. A series having seasons is for me a western concept. I just had to say that. Now, about FLCL, it really didn't need any sequels. It was this unique piece of art, this experimental crazy thing. You don't replicate that. Maybe they added that self-aware part exactly to control the damage of it not being as good as the original. Not that it worked, though.

@@gabrielgomes4228 I mean, you must have stopped watching anime a LONG time ago to find it odd that anime get follow up seasons. Even the 2000’s had sequel seasons, like Code Geass, Haruhi Suzumiya, Gundam 00, Full Metal Panic and School Rumble. Even some shows older than that did like Slayers (yes, Slayers didn’t call them “seasons”, but it’s the exact same thing). Even if anime does have more follow up seasons these days, it’s definitely never been a foreign concept to the medium.

Honestly the way things just happen with little to no explanation in FLCL and rely mostly on vibes or vague symbolism to understand is part of the point, in my opinion. You’re really there, WITH Naota, not knowing any more than he does and being just as overwhelmed and confused and frustrated as he is (and as Mamimi is). Anything that tries to codify a “power system” or clarify backstories kind of ruins the entire idea of it. FLCL isn’t about the giant robots or alien girls or planet eating corporations, it’s just about how much it sucks to be between kid and adult, how pointless life can feel, how hard it is to express these intangible exploding emotions, how poverty and abuse makes your relationships to other people unstable, etc.

the painful part is that the handful of times they did progress relations from the first show, like the five minutes they get to spend with their parents at the very end, or when Moroha has to help out the tanuki kingdom: its good. I had finished Yashahime 3 years ago, after that There was nothing, the show just kind of stopped, there was no buildup no tension, the only thing I could vaguely remember about the plot has had the most relevancy was Inuyasha and Kagome being trapped, or lost in some kind of dimension like the fucking Twilight Zone Kinimaru is just a non-existent villain that IS implied to be the main characters teacher in modern Japan, but that doesn't really go into main plot territory because every episode is too focused on tying loose ends on the entire Kagome/Innyasha missing subplot which is more like a REALLY long Side Mission that almost never fucking ends, and its nothing but loose ends and ambiguity around lore and worldbuilding because at the end of the day, its nothing more then a modified story of the original, trying desperately to claw unto you just to GIVE you a sense of nostalgia, but fails in the end.

Rather than an anime I wished stayed dead and rather an anime I wished never existed WHILE still being a fan of the source material, there's Rosario+Vampire. It's honestly probably the reason I am so into anime and manga, and it was releasing in a time where digital releases weren't super popular yet so whenever the next volume released in English I'd get my mother to take me to the bookstore that actually stocked them and spend my hard earned, very limited pocket money on the books just to see what happened next. Honestly it's an exciting and emotional journey of not only self-acceptance for multiple characters but also acceptance for others too, masquerading as a harem. Then the anime exists. Which took all that character development, the excitement, the lore, and threw it all out for fanservice. I die a little whenever I remember it. I wish that anime was dead.

I think the issue some MotW shows face is the idea of who the final boss should be. Digimon 2020 had Milleniumon, the biggest bad in the franchise, and the show kept going for 10+ episode after their defeat. Sentai had a similar problem last year. We knew the villain team were not the leaders of their faction, but the actual leaders appeared once and then never appeared again after that. Our actual final bosses were in all of 2 episodes, encountered the heroes all of once, and stole the powers they used to fight with from a couple of other villains, so they didn’t even get a cool unique form. The unusual part was that it was a pair of villains, not a single bad guy.

THANK YOU! Finally there is someone out there that can see the garbage fire that Digimon Adventure 2020 is. The digimon partners always had this theme of values and growth associated with their human partners - that was why the kids were there in the first place, and that's why the original was so good. Omegamon/Omnimon was supposed to be the ultimate culmination in the friendship/rivalry that Tai and Yamato/Matt always had, and the final overcoming of a new threat to humankind. New digimon adventure just fucking let them do that when Tai and Yamato meet for the FIRST TIME in the second episode. How fucking dumb is that? Yes, digimon was literally "friendship is power" the anime, but they executed it well, letting each character grow while their digimon partners actually manifest that growth in a new stage of evolution. That was literally the point of the original and the remake just decided to throw it out the window. What a disgrace.

Most people dislike Digimon Adventure 2020 though. Especially because it decided to remove a lot of the best parts of the original. Like, that's not a new revelation, it's been bashed since it came out by the entire fanbase. Only Digimon related things that were bashed harder I can think of are Tri and that Digimon Tamers vs political correctness thing that was shown a few years back.

@@bretginn1419 Thank god that I wasn't the only one that felt that. @darkdestiny9106 even if there turns out to not be a secret wellspring of Digimon fans that hate the 2020 series, just know that I'm in the exact same position: just couldn't bring myself to be excited to be watching that and Tri, but figured I was the odd one out. After all, you can only really experience a show for the first time once, and maybe I'm just getting too old to empathize with a 12 year old the way I used to. But maybe it's not nostalgia at all and the shows just genuinely got dumber.

For those curious how the Digimon Adventure remake progressed after episode 10, covid ripped it in half. Metal Greymon showing up when he did was IMO fine and totally fit with the show, the theme, and where it was going. It was way better than Jeff is making it sound. The problem is that it only kept going in that direction and being pretty good for a little while longer before they ran out of track and it all collapsed. It's transparent that many, many, MANY of the bad decisions made were done because it was 2020 and they couldn't safely get more than a couple of people in a recording booth together and so the characters just stopped interacting. Taichi continued to be amazingly Overexposed, but without the ability to actually write character stories they don't do anything with him despite him being in every single episode. By the end of the show it was clear production was completely exhausted and doing it only for the paycheck. A chunk of the final Arc episodes were flagrantly first drafts, and you could tell almost in advance which episode was going to be watchable based off of who it starred. If you were not one of the three or so main characters the show liked then too bad so sad, you got nothing and that included Taichi. Looking back at really could have been something, the action was gorgeous, back when characters were characterized they did some interesting modern-day retakes for the cast that felt really cool, a lot of the show's ideas were exciting, and it had a really great Digimon cast of non-partner digimon, but it's still really sucked. Honestly that all makes it even worse. And the punchline? It's still the best thing branded as Digimon Adventure this side of 02. The movies were dire... on the other hand we got Digimon Ghost Game immediately afterwards so maybe it all worked out in the end.

Kemono Friends was a big one. After the franchise crashed when they fired the director and studio for (checks notes) doing bonus material that Kadokawa hadn't actually cared about them doing before the show got popular, they still pushed forward by giving the show to the lowest bidder, and the result wasn't just cheap, it didn't have any heart or love for the source material. Not to mention the new protagonist is a jerk shilled by the narrative as someone who truly belonged there, while the original protag is retconned to be nobody special, easily forgotten by everyone whose lives she changed, and destined to die and fade from history immediately. Not to mention that, while it's understandable that the producer would have been upset with fans sending hate mail and black faxes and basically treating the studio like scabs, the fact that he was caught picking fights with angry fans online under a sock might explain why KF2's plot and characters seem so spiteful to fans who wanted more of what we got in the first one. And then we got Welcome to Japari Park, which starts every episode with "sorry this isn't lore compliant, we didn't care as much as you do."

And then 2 years later you get what you imagine is gonna be a continuation of the show just to have it be the most confusing and least appealing thing you could possible imagine. And it's made by what is ostensibly the same cast, director and animation team... you know late 2000s studio BONES. @hammerfallsokk Жыл бұрын
@@arilumani6194 Just so we're clear here; as far as i am aware gaiden came out in 2010 a full year after season 2. This was not the order most viewers at the time would have experienced the content, unless you got the combined DVD with both. I've watched it and it is a fine expanding of Hei and Yin relationship, but the main reason why season 2 to me is such a farce is the fact that the ensemble cast from season 1 is so strong, and all of the characterbuilding and setup in the first season is just thrown to the wolfs. I do not, tho think it fixes the issues of moving the focus of the show from Hei to Suou and taking away his powers. My personal feeling is the direction they took the show resulted in something less interesting as a result of this creative choice. I also personally feel that requiring you to see an OVA or movie prior to viewing season 2 of the same show is... odd. I know other shows do this as well, and i equally do not enjoy it when pieces of media can't stand alone on their own creative merits. There seems to be a pretty clear divide in the community surrounding if they think season 2 was trope subverting and found Suou interesting as a protag, versus people like me who find that it wasted most of the potential by trying to be subversive. If you go on to MAL and just read the reviews of season 1 and compare them to the reviews of season 2 it becomes fairly clear that there's been a split perception of that show since it came out, and similarly to you a lot of them tell potential viewers to watch the OVA first.

Gohan decking a resurrected Frieza in a single punch in DBZ: Fusion Reborn, The double All For One Scene from MHA: Heroes Rising, The Kyuubi vs Kyuubi battle from Naruto: Road to Ninja, all these cool, outlandish, fun things to do that couldn't really fit into canon, that's what these movies excel at, just giving us that little bite of wish-fulfilment outside the constraints of a story. but because Sacred Star is just this split off event where most of the canon characters simply aren't present, there's not much fun to be had. give us Edward making an exception to the rule and cutting loose with a Philosopher's stone like Al did in canon, it'd be out of character, but fuck it, it's non-canon and it'd be cool. give us Greed being sent by Father to keep an eye on the Elric Brothers going so far out of field, and have him fight Mustang or Armstrong or some shit. give us Edward improvising and trying his hand as Mustang's flame alchemy and blowing up a massive amount of shit by accident, just... something! you are outside the constraints of status quo, if you're not going to give us a meaningful story, DO... COOL SHIT...

That climactic scene with that animation and music in Heroes Rising is freaking amazing. But they also managed to make the film feel meaningful aside from that, despite being unable to advance the plot, by having it focus on Bakugou and Deku’s relationship. Which is a great idea, because their relationship is so complex, it’s easy to make a whole film devoted to examining their dynamic, even if they don’t advance it. Two Heroes and World Heroes Mission suffer a lot in comparison, as they also don’t advance the plot, but they don’t devote much time to character relationships that are meaningful in canon. (Though Rody is actually a really fun, engaging character for an anime OC. So the whole road trip second act with him was surprisingly meaningful.)

@@amymak93 I'd also say that Heroes Rising wins for having the bright idea of scattering a bunch of seriously badass moments across all of Class 1-A. Uraraka probably gets more highlights in that movie than she does in the entire manga prior the final arc.

I know why The Promised Neverland 2nd season was awful. I have the perspective of having been part of the very small online fandom of the scanlated manga. There was a tiny but loud subset of fans who bullied the writer terribly about mainly two things: the idea that the ending was too happy, and the idea that the main characters should have committed a genocide. I called these fans the pro-genocide faction. The writer was inexperienced in dealing with toxic fans. Fortunately, the manga was essentially finished by the time these pressures were brought to bear on the writer, so the ideas pushed by toxic fans didn't affect the manga. However, the writer became full of second-guessing and openly said that the toxic fans were right and said that different, more tragic, storylines should have been pursued and that some of the best material in the manga should have been skipped. This pressure then died down because the fandom was quite small and the manga was finished. Then, the 1st season of the anime came out and the fandom exploded in size, but these same toxic fans (who had begun to drift away to other things) came out of the woodwork again and this time pressured the writer to make sure that the 2nd season of the anime went in a very different direction than the manga. The writer doesn't really have that power, okay, but the writer still came out and said once again that they would support these various toxic-fan ideas in the second season as much as possible. With how the 2nd season turned out, I assume that some of these ideas must have went via the writer into the anime; at the very least the idea that something had to be very different in the story. So, you can blame a very small number of toxic fans who were able to pressure an inexperienced writer for how the second season went sour.

If they were threatening them or were super hateful then I can understand if you hate that. I kind felt that way when others were super hateful towards the AoT creator. But I agree with some of that criticism. I really dislike the fact that Emma was able to easily convince people who were against the demons, despite what all the trauma and pain the demons put them through and kept bending over backwards to make it go Emma's way. The horror aspect also felt ruined too since their were no stakes, like I'm pretty sure majority of the kids from the first arc are still alive.

To be fair, I feel like Prometheus made a pretty decent Alien 3.... but otherwise, yeah, I think I agree on all counts. I rewatched Eureka 7 (along with a lot of other great Bones shows) last year, and so many of their early work was just so awesome! Not without issues (typically around pacing, or ending a climax), but a lot of great nostalgia bait came from Bones! FMA, Scrapped Princess, E7, Darker than Black, RahXephon, Xam'd, Soul Eater... All amazing shows! And then 2009 hit and... its like they just completely lost the plot! Gemini, AO, Not, I would even say Space Dandy was just odd and lots of other shows with weird and zany animation much better and with more of a point. I understand they have some shows now that I would enjoy again... but the disappointment is already there. Hard to go back to a studio that took so many wrong turns in a row. Even if I like a newer show they make, I'm just afraid they well ruin it.

I'm happy Digimon 2020 got a mention here. From what I read seems like part of the reason they were so focused with Tai and couldn't actually use the other kids that much was because during the pandemic they couldn't actually bring in too many people at the same time to work in the studios which affected the amount of characters an episode could have (as all the voice actors couldn't all meet at the same time) and because they had to separate the staff into multiple small groups it caused issues with the writing of the series too. I don't know how much this actually affected the end product but it's such a shame to know there was a chance we could have gotten something really good but was screwed by some very bad timing with the pandemic being a thing.
@frankwest5388 Жыл бұрын
I call Bull on that one The show came out April 2020, the pandemic became a problem world wide in late December 2019 the earliest. This type of show is in development for about 2 years all things considered and voice work doesn’t change the script that hard especially when every episode was already animated and scripted for large parts. Maybe near the end of development there have been some issues but there is no way that this is why they wrote what they did. What I think actually happened is that Agumon and Tai are the most marketable and recognizable characters in the series and they were desperate to cash in on that. Whereas the original was more focused on showing off all the different digimon, the reboot focused on pushing the biggest seller. This is why they also always force in a new “Agumon” as the partner of the MC. So executive meddling or marketing bias made them do this
