I recently joined a very large manufacturer. One of the first things I did was try to follow up with every single person I walked by everyday unless it was a safety incident related and I had to rush. You wouldn't believe how many people thought it was a trap or deception when I asked how they are doing and what do they need for help.

I swear this was the most productive and insightful 10 minutes of my life today. As an acting HOD in the commerce department, I realised that I got promoted to the position because I am good at my job and stood out in terms of job specifications (Experience, Skills and qualifications) but in the process, I still felt that something is lacking, and learning about the necessity of empathy in our leadership as leaders and how that can help develop our teams and create a positive working environment really changed how I look at things and how I plan to approach my team without managing more but leading them to the common objective. However, this can only work when people are willing to partake in the vision because honesty is a challenge for leaders sometimes (Difficult employees who just do not have the enthusiasm or the right attitude).

Leadership is inert in everybeing, we are leaders in our respective callings. Not learned but you can upskill or improve in what is already in you. Find your area of purpose and then would you thrive. You cannot put a fish on the land and expects it to thrive, this is why people fail and feel frustrated, depressed and unfulfilled. Stay blessed 🙏 ✌

Rewatching this and having had a talk with my exec yesterday, I am much more comfortable with having the talk of “this may not be the best job for you” with an employee. Went from putting in the effort to work well with all to picking and choosing his own desirable place without even trying to rectify where he is currently.

BRAVOOOOO. Brilliant 👏. I was a courtesy driver for Four Seasons hotel in NYC. I loved my job. Even though I was employed by a limo company, one of the managers from FS hotel came to train us, as we were an extension to their service. I will never forget that gentleman. His rich presence is memorable. I then, got trained by "W" hotel team. Same, great presentation and points. They gave example , when ppl comeback from vacay, the first story they tell is about what went wrong, and later, what went good. Meaning that ppl always remember and willing to talk about what's wrong with his experience with that ofice/business/company. I will listen to this video about 100 times and implement what I learn in my new career. Lately I'm dealing with managers who has no idea how to manage, no emphatic behavior, just a disaster.

Being a leader means you are not in charge, it means you are responsible to those in your charge. Leadership is a skill, it’s practicable and learnable. When you practice everyday you’ll be a good leader but when you stop you’ll be a weak leader. Everyone can be a leader but not everyone want to be a leader and not everyone should be a leader because it comes with great personal sacrifice. Create a right environment to have right people.

Layoffs are indeed a scary time and thing to go through. I challenge people, to network and be a source of optimism to the workplace. Makes a difference. You can't prepare for layoffs, it's almost like preparing for death. In the same way, be the best person you can be and the right people will notice. Loved this message!

I am a department manager, most of what he said here are correct. However, some employees are not cut out to work in certain positions, so they have to be removed. No matter what training you give them, they are not just right for the job. You can not turn a duck into an eagle.
@anshybalak2582

I saw eagle managers in my company .They were a duck first but they were trained well well and later become manager. From the moment they become manager they did not trained new joiners.They decide to put new joiners in dangerzone with " you have no knowledge ".Also the ironic part was that some ducks were smarter than eagle because they have to extract the knowledge without being trained.This is the Dutch business culture

@TheLegend-uq1gz I disagree with your assessment, it’s a cop out. You have to find the right angle in which you approach the individuals. Just as Simon was saying, your responsibility is to make sure the people are ok. As a supervisor/manager your job is to change the narrative, find the niche for the person on your team that you have discounted as a duck. You are not a good candidate for leadership if this is your attitude. You bring people up, not put a stamp on them because you feel like they are not a good fit for the job. SMH

Not every strategy works with everyone. As a Leader, challenge yourself to come at it from a different perspective. Deploy empathy, courtesy and respect. If you do that, you'll earn the respect and people will naturally grow with you. Have the ability to listen to your people, they will tell you everything you need to know, even if you don't agree with it. I would challenge you to listen to your team. Hold a meeting or one on ones with people and listen to their feedback. Don't talk, just listen. Good leaders eat last.
@definitelynosebreather
@definitelynosebreather 10 ай бұрын
People who disagree probably never worked in a leadership position. In an ideal and more emphatic world, I'd agree with the idea, but when you look at the real corporate world we live in, you find some people who simply are not fit into the job, no matter how many resources (training, 1:1 sessions, ..) you put into them. At the end of the day, it becomes a business decision of whether you should keep them or take someone new, because people who underdeliver means other people (either supervisor or colleagues) must work harder to fill their gap. I do believe they are exceptiona, but anyone who disagrees should wake up and realize the brutal world we live.

Hi Simon Sinek, I agree 100% that leadership is all about being concerned about those who we lead. In business...the best model which is built capable to achieve this outcome is: network marketing; direct sales; Collaborative financial leverage; mutually beneficial partnerships. We specialize in helping build family units into stronger entities by helping eliminate personal debt and then teach and model how to develop private wealth. Simon Sinek, delivering justice to people is through a business model allowing ownership of relationship connections and maintaining them over the long term. That is the value of our industry. Direct sales is designed for restoring trust and contributing to community growth and wellbeing. It allows families to secure their dynasties.

Leadership can also be complex at times too because it comes in many ways and temperaments as people lead in different ways. Sometimes, there are leaders who should not be leaders. I myself struggle in being a leader even when I do not have that position to. I have a hard time dealing with people because I have an issue with trusting others because I was a target for harassment and bullying. I am working on trying to be better and moving on so I can be a leader and the one creature that shows the best Leadership traits are wolves. To be a leader is also to set the best example possible, one of those is if you lead with kindness, caring, compassion for those around you they are going to follow you through thick and thin. You also have to make sacrifices and sometimes your life can be on the line for the sake of your team or pack. Then there are the bad leaders who are selfish, they use greed and fear to get what they want and it becomes the point where no one wants to follow them but has no other choice but to because they are too afraid to stand against it.

Dawn- The fine line between a leader and a manager is a manager manages process. a leader manages PEOPLE- that is they understand what motivates you may not motivate me. You say you don't have a position of leadership. I disagree. Look at yourself in the mirror; THAT is who you lead every day. Start with yourself and see what happens. Think about it- if you wouldn't follow yourself, why would anyone else? You do not need a title to be a leader and you point that out clearly in your comments!

Dawn- Out of all the 5 Ms, you can handle all Ms except MEN. Bcz no two human beings are same. Even the same one person will have split personality. Handling MEN is the most complex jobs in this world and that's what I practice. It will drain you mentally and physically as well.

Agreed - however, good leadership sometimes means firing someone. Keeping a poor-performing employee often reduces growth opportunity for the rest. Yes, you always lead with empathy and understanding. Employees are everything, and finding good people is hard. Because of that, we must fight for the employees who are fighting for our business, and get rid of the ones who aren't.
