Super happy that this channel was recommended to me. A big fan of the K24A - have had dreams of getting something with more ooomph on the super crap CA gasoline (which I can hopefully still get to pass a stricter-than-necessary CA smog test). For eight or so years I have read of the potential from this overengineered-from-the-factory motor, yet hearing Mike Kojima’s high tech/enginNERD breakdown, I am convinced I might have to consult MotoIQ’s expertise for a longblock build.

When talking compression ratio of any type of boosted engine it is less about the compression of the engine and more about the amount of boost you run. You should always be looking at the effective compression ratio to determine what fuel to run. I believe the proper equation to determine effective compression ratio is ((boost+14.7)/14.7)×static compression ratio of the engine= effective compression ratio. This equation will need to be adjusted to your elevation but when calculating effective compression ratio you can quickly see that low compression doesn't mean a safer build when boosting anything if you run high boost. You can build a high compression engine and run low boost and have something just as safe. This seems to be something I see engine builders overlook constantly.
@motoiq
@motoiq Жыл бұрын
It doesn't work that way, particularly with pump gas and even more so for HC reducing gasolines like California gas, octane doesnt always have a direct correlation with detonation resistance. This because the Reid vapor pressure which has a big effect on detonation independently of octane can be high mostly due to oxygenating additives. High compression engines are super prone to detonate with boost especially for this reason, they detonate easily even without boost. You would have to run the timing so retarded like close to zero degrees before TDC that you start pumping heat into the combustion chamber which contributes to detonation in a viscous circle. Some OEM turbo engines fire at or near TDC in their low octane maps as is, to raise the compression would be seriously asking for trouble. The only possible exception to this are DI engines due to their in cylinder cooling. It's not engine builders overlooking, its experience in what it takes to build reliable engines and analyzing failed engines to determine the root cause that counts.

Bed plates are freaking cool! If I ever got the $$ to do something way extra with my G i'd be after a VQ35HR to go bonkers with because of the bed plate and killer heads. Or a VK56DE with the skirted block. Could turn that into a bed plate PRP style. Even if I only ever get on the $$ enough for Eagle, Wiseco, Billet ported oil pump and a set of cams i'm getting everything cryo and WPC treated. There will be no build before a no insurance added build. It takes me 33 hours to do a 2020 L84 camshaft in truck (get paid 23 hours 'cause GM expects me to simp for them) so i'm not trying to crack into my VQ more than once. Can't imagine i can pull it, rebuild it, and reinstall it in less than 60 hours and that's more time than i'm trying to sink into any money pit.

As i understand it a girdle ties together individual main caps and may or may not tie in with the block housing. A bed plate is like the K series where the block separates at the crank line with all mains fully integrated into the lower block. Bed plate is supposed to be stouter but ups the $$$ when anything bottom end fails. Nissan's VQ35HR from the last two 350z years have a bed plate like the K series among other advantages over nissan's other attainable V6's. They're the working man's VR38. VQ40DE is slept on too.
