I have an '08 Sebring and I had this problem with the shifter not wanting to come out of Park. I solved the problem by losing my temper and yanking quite hard on the shift lever. I heard a snapping sound come from inside the console and the shifter came out of Park. Now I no longer have to worry about Chryslers crappy shift lock interfering with my ability to drive my car.

It's odd that you have both issues. Usually it starts but shifter won't move or shifter moves and it doesn't start. The symptoms are not making sense at the moment.

I recommend checking the shifter to see if you can get it to move first like in the video.

+MotorCity Mechanic I'll take another look. however, when it was stuck I was kinda a bit rough with it and shaked it a bit. after taking the cover off I reattached everything that came loose. lol... it's still stuck however in general. however, when the key is turned and the break peddle is pushed it moves into gears.

Nice video, It'll help me assist a friend experienceing this problem on their sebring. Also Note, I found mention that a Recall was made in 2010 for a number of Sebrings with this problem. Enter the affected car's VIN on the Chrysler website to check the recalls.

+Craig Harmon If it truly is in park....it should start up and also you should be able to removed the key. If the key doesn't come out then it most likely isn't in park. Like I said....make sure you have two people......one with their feet on the brake pedal firmly....fist make sure its physically in park. Then start the vehicle. Then still having the brakes depressed, unhook the cable from the transmission and manually move the shifter lever at the trans from park....to reverse...to neutral....to drive. You would be moving the shifter linkage 3 positions. Then verify that it is in drive and then go to where you need to. Once there you need to put back in park again by going 3 positions in the opposite direction and then remove the key

Then a tow truck driver got it to shift to drive but I couldn’t get it to park or reverse w out turning it off and applying the e brake . What do you suggest ?

gaby miller sounds like the shifter bushing is gone out on the end of the shifter cable. Most likely the one at the transmission end. They sell bushing replacement kits for that but you have to order online. That’s most likely the cause of your issue. Thanks for asking and for watching. Make sure to subscribe

OK M.M. got to looking the cable came off at shifter no nut there must have fallen off... manually shifted got it home now looking at replacing the cable I believe it said that the center console has to come off it to fix at shifter.. is this correct? the reason I believe I have to replace this is because it still will not shift out of park even with cable unattached to trans.?

If you remove the rubber from cup holder there is a little hole, you can stick your finger in and press the swit,h to shift out of park. I'm currently working on this problem myself.

The issue you run into is that if that pink piece is broke that other override that your speaking of wont make a difference.....it wont come out of park. Sounds like you might have a different issue.

My daughters 2008 Sebring won’t start and when I do a scan it shows that the car is in drive even though the shifter is in park. +Craig Harmon should be able to start in park and neutral. you may need to get under the hood and try like I mentioned. you need to move the linkage all the way one way to make sure its in park and starts...otherwise you have to move it the otherway to make sure that's park and start it. but first look to see that the cable is moving at the trans first before going that route

Sounds like the shifter cable bushing has come apart at one end of the cable...either the shifter end or under the hood at the transmission. If so then most likely the shifter cable has come off of the shifter inside the vehicle. You would need to remove the center console to gain access to the shifter and then see if the cable has come off. If I understand the issue wrong then please correct me.

If the shifter and indicator dont match then you need to inspect both ends of the cable to see if its still attached. There is a good chance that the shifter cable bushing is on on the trans side of the cable.

+Brit Gran Sorry about the delay Brit....you could have a cable issue. Could be broke or come loose at either end. You will need to have someone look under the hood at the cable and linkage to see if moving at the same time when the inside shifter is being moved. This could tell us a lot.

+Melissa Sharp The chrome trim piece just snaps in place. There is nothing else you need to remove to get it off. I recommend a plastic trim stick to get under an edge and then work your way around until its fully released. Just take your time and you should be okay.

R Rap Thanks for the reply. Theres a very good chance that the issue could be related to the shift interlock cable. It could be out of adjustment or damaged. Some times when the shifter has the issue mentioned in the video....people force it out of gear and then things get broken or damaged. The portion of the shifter that fails is related to the key that goes up to the key cylnder and prevents you from removing the key. MotorCity Mechanic so i had the exact same problem as misty and thank god this giy had the same issue and happens to be walking his dog. So the cable came off the shift thinging in the engine. But he just put it back on and the shifter worked again. My question is how do i fix this? Do i replace the cable or the connecter at the end of it so it doesnt come off again?

Hey there, I read past comments and got a bit jumpy because it may be what's wrong with my dad's car but I thought I'd add my problem anyway to see what you think it may be. 2007 Sebring Touring Edition (2.7L), new battery (as of January of this year) with a NO CRANK/NO START, you can't even hear a clicking just a buzzing (fuel pump?). Like the previous person, the Sebring won't start at all and is stuck in Park (position of shifter supposedly matches to dash display) aside from trunk release, everything else works. To get into trunk you have to go through backseat. Is it because the car doesn't think it's in park so it won't let me start it? Could it be that shifter cable bushing? I've checked all the fuses several times and I'm going to check the battery terminals (Note: Stupidest place to put a battery in the world... :-/) Sorry about the length of this comment, but I'm going mad trying to figure it out. My mum dad and I are all currently using one car between us and we all commute almost 90 minutes (both ways) every day... it's a nightmare.

+Supesfan88 Being that the indicator matches the shifter position....makes me think not a bushing issue. The shifter should still move even if a bushing issue. Being stuck in park and not starting wont be the shifter interlock issue either. There is no one item I can think of for you to check at this moment. +Carlos Castillo What most likely happened is that the cable came off either at the shifter inside or at the trans outside. The rubber bushing probably feel apart and allow the cable end to become detached.

If your needing a bushing that it will be at both ends of the shifter cable. One at the trans and one at the shifter. The one on the shifter will be where the cable attaches to the shifter. Hope this helps. Make sure to subscribe

The first thing is to see what the cluster says as far as what gear it is in. It has to be in park or neutral inorder for it to start. Check that first.

+Craig Harmon Afternoon Craig....first thing I want you to do is with the help of someone....check the movement of the shifter cable on the transmission. You need to have someone try to move the shifter inside the vehicle while looking at the cable linkage on the transmission to see if it moves as well. We want to see movement which would let us know the cable is okay. If no movement then we need to see what end the issue is on. Make sure the cable is attached properly at the transmission and then you may need to remove the center console to make sure the cable hasn't come off at the shifter assembly. In an emergence type situation....you can unhook the cable at the trans and have some one pressing on the brake pedal.....move the linkage to drive at the transmission so that it can be driven somewhere safe. It takes 2 people to do this so that you don't run over your self. That's an emergency situation so make sure to use it as a last ditch effort to get it out the road or somewhere safe. Look it over closely and let me know what you find.

+Mike Nichols There is a very good chance that the shifter cable bushing has come off. If the shifter was the issue then the vehicle would still start but the shifter would not more. Your saying it will not start which means that as long as everything else works like the lights, radio, etc....then the transmission itself most likely isn't in Park. It needs to be either in park or neutral for it to turn over. Usually the shifter will move still because the cable came off on one end. So the shifter does not move correct? You said it was stuck in park....just trying to make sure I understand fully

Mike Nichols radio stop working at the same time? The fuses related to the radio are #14 and #5 at the fuse box inside the vehicle on the left side of the dash. I don't see how this would be related to the issue but worth checking.

usually if the shifter will not come out of park its an issue at the shifter. The fact that its saying its in neutral and the shifter is in park usually means there is a shifter bushing failure. Whats odd is that you have both issues which doesnt make sense. Double check the connection of the trans cable to the transmission to make sure the bushing isnt worn out and gone. Thats the first step.

Constance Wooden Morning, I will try to get back in a few.....currently working and finding the time to check further is a bit difficult. What I do know is that there are no recalls that are incomplete on your vehicle. The tire pressure connector recall was completed in May of 2008. If your having issues with the connectors now....they will not do anything about it....its been 7 years. Sounds like you have a few issues.....each one can happen over time. The shifter cable rarely goes out but it can. I have put about 2-3 on this model. There is no one answer I can give you to help solve your problems. Every vehicle out there has common problems.....I see it at the dealership all the time. There are some models that I know what's wrong with before I check it. The information pulls up on my end when I enter the VIN so I'm not sure what they were talking about as far as not in their system. The shifter recall issue wasn't with the cable....it had to do with the mechanism that stops you from moving the shifter out of park unless the brake pedal is depressed. The recall wont be related to the cable. As far as the TPS system recall......you can have a lot of different issues with the tire pressure system that may or may not have anything to do with the connectors. Each item you mentioned needs to be checked. I would love too check it out for you but unless your located in Georgia....I wouldn't be much help.
