This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2023 Acura RDX compact premium SUV.
The Acura RDX has a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a 10-speed automatic transmission, 272 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, standard AWD in Canada. In the US, both FWD and AWD options are available.
In Canada, there are just two trims for the 2023 Acura RDX and both are A-Spec, no longer is there a base RDX offered. Standard features include, a 7” multi-information display, 10.2” centre display with True touchpad interface, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a wireless charger, 12-way power driver and passenger seats with lumbar support, ultra-suede and leather trimmed upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, driver seat memory, a heated steering wheel, ELS Studio 3D premium sound system, a panoramic sunroof and a hands-free power tailgate.
In the US, there are 5 trims, the base trim Acura RDX comes with quite a few of the standard features offered in Canada but it is missing ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, the ELS sound system, driver seat memory, a hands-free power tailgate and ultra-suede upholstery, leatherette is standard. One up from the base model adds the wireless charger, the stereo system and leather trimmed seats. The A-Spec model adds ventilated front seats.
In both Canada and the US, the top trim Acura RDX has a head-up display, surround view camera, 16-way power driver and passenger seats and heated rear seats.
Fuel economy, A-Spec models get 11.3L/100 km, 21 MPG city and 9.1L/100 km, 26 MPG highway. The RDX can tow 1500 pounds.
Here’s the pricing, the RDX A-Spec is $57,420 CAD and the Platinum Elite A-Spec $62,820 CAD.
Acura RDX FWD model starts at $41,550 USD, AWD $43,750 USD. Technology FWD $44,200 USD, AWD $46,400 USD. A-Spec FWD $47,200 USD, AWD $49,400 USD. Advance $51,550 USD and A-Spec Advance $53,550 USD.

I think Zack or Andrea mentioned Mercedes Benz as an alternative. Just note while MB has been chasing lower price points with vehicles for a while, MB maintenance costs are still very much "Mercedes" priced

@@Krishna-tk1vi Yes but MB service is second to none (or at least it used to be) so they should be treating you no different than E Class clients especially if you are paying the same rates. I use to buy from a dealer that had one line for VW, one for Audi and one for Porsche. 😄

The Palisade feels more plush and the RDX is more sporty. Both are equally quiet. The Palisade accelerates in a hushed fashion, the RDX more brash. I love the electronics in the Palisade better but the RDX’s materials are a step above. The one thing Acura has over Hyundai is service. Hyundai service sucks, pure and simple and corporate never helps. For me, I’m staying with the Honda family but wishing Hyundai get their act together!

1:40 - I've got a '22 TLX with a similar array of buttons, and I totally dig it. I came from a '17 Civic hatchback and really didn't like how most of the Civic's HVAC controls were hidden in the infotainment screen. I also like Acura's pushbutton shifter controls - they're easy to use while making it difficult to choose the wrong gear. I mostly like the trackpad for how it allows the screen to stay at a comfortably high viewing distance, but yeah, it's not great for CarPlay (and terrible if you try choosing a playlist in Apple Music).

This is a drivers SUV. The SHAWD makes this vehicle handle better than it really should especially noticeable in winters conditions. If you put a premium on driving dynamics you’ll love this SUV. Drove an A-Spec through Turo for a road trip last year. Compared to my CX-5 It felt a half size bigger inside, it felt sporty like the Mazda but with a lot more pick-up compared to our base engine in the CX-5. Loved how it drove, fun and maneuverable but hated the trackpad set up and the dash/console lay out! Too busy, poor storage in console area too. A similar, more intuitive and better console layout with at least an option for a touchscreen and this would round out a really nice sporty, nimble and comfortable run-a-bout! Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the max cargo is closer to 60 cu.ft. and not near 80 cu.ft.?

I've had an RDX since January of 2019 and really like everything about it except the fuel economy. Part of that is my fault since I tend to have a heavy foot since it's so much fun to drive but the only time I get close to decent mileage is when I'm on the freeway. I'm always amazed that so many reviewers are baffled by the touchpad. I had that down in like the first week of having the car. The only part I don't like about it is when I'm using Carplay and then it does act like a conventional trackpad. No fingerprints all over the screen is a real bonus too.

I have driven my 2019 Advance RDX for 60000 miles and I very much love the push button transmission. I like the touch pad interface much more than the touch screen on my previous two CR-Vs. It is not like computer touch pads but is instead designed to keep your eyes on the road and not the mouse cursor. The drive mode dial is really a stupid waste of space. The interior really is very, very large for this class. My lifetime gas mileage (on Fuelly) is 23.0 mpg. I keep searching for a hybrid that can give me much better fuel economy with all the attributes of this car but they don't yet exist. I have my name in for the first Mazda CX-70 at my local dealer but I am not convinced it will be a better car. My biggest complaint; a slow processor in the infotainment system. The sound is great.

One issue I found with the RDX is the tent in the below front of the panoramic sunroof might make rattle or popping sound when going over curb. My 2021 RDX has that popping issue whenever I go turn into a curb entrance where the car will shake left and right, then the sunroof is trying to balance out the uneven force exerted onto the car during the turn and made the noise.

Couldn't agree with you more on the center control misses, especially the button shifter -- something you brilliantly have said (about all makes' new shifters) is the "answer to the question no one asked," and which - with model refreshes - I was hoping would go away by now in favor of a traditional one,...but Acura has actually doubled-down on these with new releases. The other odd pieces mentioned are glaring as well. An otherwise just right vehicle, just right size, driving dynamics and features...only in need of a complete console transplant. A comparatively minor nit: I don't care for the general appearance and at least daytime visibility/lack of contrast with the gray band speedo/tach graphics and would much prefer a return to the analog guages (or at least analog look). Remember when Honda had some of the best, most crisp ones?

Great Review as always Guys... Acura missed the Boat. They should've offered a Gas / Electric Hybrid AND fix that TTIP Touch Pad. BTW, I have a 22 MDX Advance (US) - much to my disbelief, Acura did NOT include the Adaptive Suspension Dampeners in the MDX in the US but Yes in Canada,. Even more strange, The Auto Dampeners were included in the RDX in the US except in the base trim? I'm "toying" with Trading down to a new RDX Advance or A-Spec Advance in appx 10-12 months. I lease my 22 MDX and already getting Early Lease Terminations form the Dealer with $2250 Loyalty Money. I am also considering a Kia Sorrento SX Prestige (debating on Hybrid or non Hybrid [which has much more power / torque than the Hybrid version in lieu of better MPGs].

As for the shifter, this is my 2nd Acura with the push button shifter and it will be my last car with a push button shifter. I just took a look at a 23 Pilot, seen the shifter and walked away. BTW, I'm in IT and work off of a track pad and laptop most days all day long and still hate the Acura Track pad. I would just get a cx90 over this now. Bigger, better interior, even better mpg. Great review. Especially the ending. This RDX is a wonderful vehicle. But I could never envision myself welcoming their unique approach to that center console, or it’s pricing. Andrea is absolutely right in suggesting the Honda Accord’s dash/interior would work perfectly. Because of these things I would most likely short list it (for driving experience and reliability), but would probably put the Genesis in my driveway instead. Interior design and luxury appointments are paramount when spending over $60,000 dollars in my opinion. Thanks for another well done video.

I took a really good look at this vehicle. I was looking for a well equipped affordable mid size SUV. I just couldn't get over the center stack and entertainment interface. I ended up buying an Audi employees 2021 SQ5 with 45,000km, love the vehicle but 2 things I dislike right off the bat, low quality base stereo that needs more highs and mids, and WTF is with such a poor designed center console. Despite that it is a quiet sporty well built SUV.

I like the V6 with the 6 speed tranin my 2013 better than the 2 liter turbo. The RDX is still an insane value. To get a similarly equipped Audi Q5 or BMWX3 is easily $60k plus. Huge difference in reliability and maintenance costs as well. I love the X3 but if I get every option that the RDX A-Spec model, X3 has, it’s about $65k. The BMW handles better, but it’s not $15,000 better.

Usd? Because for usd the q5 prestige is the exact same price as the rdx advance and bmw. Bmw is about 2k-4K more depends on what you spec The glc and gv70 are a little more pricey at 58000 but at this price 3k isn’t that much of a difference I think you were. Looking at the sq5 and m40i which have the v6 which are both very different cars and will wipe this out of the water due to the v6

*To sell like a hot-cake, Acura needs to:* 1. Add a volume knob at the 'track pad' area next to passenger 2. Add a touch screen, 12" or larger 3. Add a switch to shut off the fake engine sound piped in under hard acceleration

Question: I've been waiting for the 23 kia Sportage hybrid ex premium in vesta blue with grey seats since January and i have my name on the list at a few dealerships out of state. i found a dealership yesterday that has the exact one I'm wanting and they wanted $2500 over msrp. I talked him down to $1k over msrp and he said i can get it on or before May 20th of this month. was this a stupid move of me?

It seems that Acura has lost its direction. Then with less reliability, the Acura RDX has lost some appeal. I have an MDX from a few generations ago. It has been a stellar performer. I do not think I will ever replace it. We have enough different vehicles to drive that we do not drive the MDX that much. I take it out for "exercise" every few weeks. I sometimes wonder if Acura has lost its way. Thank you for your review. 😊

I did hear from Acura mechanic who once told me that the RDX wasn’t a reliable, or as well put together as the MDX. This was prior to the 2019 re-design. We leased a 2021 model with the technology package. After two years and 35k miles, we traded it in for a GLB 250 with about 12-15k in options. My issues with the RDX were not in reliability, as far as powertrain is concerned. But rather, with build quality, and the awful infotainment. The “true touch pad” is unnecessarily cumbersome, and I hope Acura moves away from this (or at least includes a touch screen to compliment it), as I avoided the MDX this time around because I didn’t want to deal with that system again. The RDX after about 10k miles began to make squeaking noises on the roof line, which made it sound like an “old car” every time we hit a bump on the road. From my research this is a common flaw on the RDX. Our hood, never quite aligned properly with the head on the left side , this was an alignment issue from the factory it seems. The 2021 model didn’t have USB-C ports, and it lacked a 12V on the cargo area, which reduced practicality. It just felt that we were overpaying for a compact SUV that didn’t quite match up in tech and luxury to other premium and luxury brands. A minor complaint which turned into a major issue of sorts, was that the back seats did not recline. In our line of work, we some times have to ferry our assistants for long trips, and they weren’t as comfortable as they could have been because of this. Other than that, the Acura RDX was fun to drive, very powerful base (only) engine, it is more powerful than my current GLB’s but I like the GLBs transmission a bit more. The RDX is a very reliable SUV in terms of engine; we never had any issues. Oil changes were around $70 dollars every 3k miles. We did have the two year complimentary maintenance service, but only used it twice as we were forced to go to their service center which did both Honda and Acura products so the lines were long and we would spend 4-6 hours waiting on their waiting area, without coffee and other amenities that luxury dealers usually offer. At Mercedes (and Lexus, as we own a 2011 IS) we have always been treated like we bought a special product and are important customers to them. These are the reasons we might never return to Acura again, at least for the foreseeable future.

The RDX especially post 2019 is a solid and reliable vehicle. Without doubt a solid all rounder. Wish Acura would add the Tech to the trim levels as not everyone wants a sports appearance packages. The revised 2022 is a super polished version and worth a look if you are shopping in the segment.

@@sammyg4806 . Where are you driving that you have squeaking on the roof? You would have to be going off road and driving in exceptionally bad roads to have the car twist in such a manner that your roof squeaks. Tell the truth!

I really like the styling of the RDX, but that center stack looks like a nightmare to live with. I'm disappointed with the fuel economy, given that it's a 4 cylinder. Our 3-row 6-cylinder Explorer Limited doesn't get much less MPG and it's a much larger vehicle (we get 18/24 mpg). Honda and Acura are taking their own sweet time releasing EV products, and it will be years before they have a mature product. It's hard to get excited about paying $42-52k (USD) for something like this...

Honda should put the CRV hybrid system in here so it can compete with the Lexus NX. They just don't have enough hybrids in the market let alone an EV that is still years away.
