It was not FIA who decided to go F2 route. There was no "series" at that time. It was organizers of each GP who decided which class to enter the race. As almost all organizers made F2 as the main entries, there was no F2 as F1. Because there was no F1 series. It was World Drivers championship.

This channel is great, its a wealth of interesting info. I'm loving the rundowns of racing throughout the years and the more obscure cars from history. Could you do a history of the various GT classes? GT1, 2, 3, 4 etc. It would make a great series. Thanks, I look forward to more videos!

I think both the mercedes and the 250f are very fitting picks. I would side with the 250f over the mercedes simply because I don’t think maserati having f2 experience means that the car they developed for f1 was unoriginal or derivative. Its legendary status is on par with that of the mercedes’, and it was the first world beating car made specifically for the regulations.

Voiturette did not allow for 4,5l unsupercharged, it was the pre-war Grand Prix class, that also allowed 3l supercharged. Post-war Formula 1 took 1.5l supercharged from Voiturette and 4.5l unsupercharged from Grand Prix.
@johnbestavros6915 Жыл бұрын
to put it another way, the only thing the AIACR outright "disallowed" were the pre-war Silver Arrows, as they'd done the 3.0L supercharged version of that Grand Prix formula. It makes sense given how many competitive 4.5L unsupercharged cars had existed at the time (very few).

Great video! If you want to go through the path of searching the first car ever built that partecipated at the F1 Championship (so from 1950) you actually don't need to consider the very first race! That's because the oldest car ever fielded in the F1 championship was a ERA type A driven by Bob Gerard at the 1950 Monaco GP, the second round of the season! It was made in 1934, which means that the car was 16 years old at the time of the race!

I would say the Maserati was the first F1 car. it was the first car build specifically for F1. while not doing anything new, it was specifically built for it. then the Mercedes would be the first F1 car using space age materials.

Great video and great points. anouther angle you could look from is that since the Indianapolis 500 was part of the f1 calendar from 1950-1960, the new built cars in the 50s would also technically count though they were certainly made more for Indy than f1.
@jegaby1 Жыл бұрын
Before 1980 it was just the world drivers championship and could include non F1 races like Indy or the F2 era of the championship. Just being part of the championship doesn't make them F1 cars.
@McLeod917 Жыл бұрын
@Jeremy Durward I mean true but most of the Cars in the video aren't F1 cars either and indy was making new production cars before f1 did post war...and also beat down ferrari in '52. So fits the scope of the video at least.

Um... Maserati too had a streamliner for the 250F...anyway, the Merc Streamliner was not a great success. Overall , I don't think you can dismiss the F2 years...if it is considered the top tier , then all we have is a change in engine size regs. which has been the story of the top class since the beginning

Well summarized. Only mentioned at the end, the BRM was built from scratch in period, to the existing Formula 1 regulations, so it deserves more scrutiny. Even if the FIA carried over the voiturette formula from prewar as the first "Formula One rules, they were the rule, so any freshly built car, should be able to qualify for consideration. Having said that, I like your logical progression to your conclusion, even though I'm not certain you are correct. Well done.

This is still a very difficult question to answer, it’s like asking what was the first drag racing car, because we know the date the first official drag race was held, but there had to be drag races before that for the idea to exist, to me, the first F1 car is probably some modified car in the early 1900s meant to beat another fast car.

This made me think, what is the last non-F1 car to take part in a Grand Prix? I would say the Dallara 3087 Formula 3000 car that Scuderia Italia ran at the 1988 Brazilian Grand Prix, although it predictably failed to even pre-qualify. Which car was the last one to actually qualify for a Grand Prix might be an interesting topic of discussion.

I'd have to investigate more but the Talbot-Lago T26C and Mercedes-Benz W196 do seem to tick the boxes.

W196 was later developed into 300 SLR. Both dominated the championship it was competing before the Le Mans tragedy cut its dominance. It really showed how cutting edge the W196 was as a purpose built F1 car that they only need to adapt it a little to become an endurance monster. And I do remember some manufacturers tried to enter F1 by converting their endurance/sports car to become F1 car like what Porsche and Aston Martin did in the 50s.

Hold on, were those non-open wheel race cars actually racing against the open wheel race cars? Was that after the formula racing leagues were established? That seems weird.
@stijnpaspont Жыл бұрын
Back then you were allowed to just put different bodywork on the cars. so for high speed circuits like monza and stuff, the mercs looked different with their low drag body. But mechanically they were the same as the open wheel variants.

Okay hear me out ! the name of "Formula One World Championship" was createt in 1981 befor that it was called world Championship of Drivers and the International Cup for F1 Constructors and changed after the FISA/FOCA war so if you want the first "modern" formular one car you whould have to look in 1981 and after a bit of research i say the first Formular one car is the Ferrari 126CK its not a development version of another car like other teams and development startet Mid season 1980 (yes the whould have not known that the name whold change but it was intendet for formular one 1981! ) and first start was in the first race of the Formula One World Championship the 1981 United States Grand Prix West! yes i know i am standing on thin ice here

4:05 - That's blatantly wrong, it's rather a well-accepted fact in Historic Car circles that the 1946 "Gran Premio del Valentino" in Turin was the very first Formula 1 Grand Prix, since it was essentially a test bed for the proper rulebook to be launched on New Years 1947. The FIA, via its sport ruling body known as the ISC (International Sporting Committee), even sent letters in advance to the Turinese organizers in order to fully test the rulebook's viability. 5:00 - WRONG. The Maserati 4CLT/48 "Sanremo" was a completely different car when compared to its older sister, the 4CL that ran until 1947 (and, with privateers, even in 1950). A completely new suspension system at the front, redesigned engine block, completely new compressors, a completely different radiator and steering system... it's basically a new car by any metric. Also, the Talbot-Lago T26C is a direct derivation of the road-going T26... virtually nothing changed but the bodywork. Would you really classify a Grand Tourer that has just a bit of a new bodywork being done on it "a new F1 car"? Come on... 6:58 - WRONG. The FIA was forced to set the '52 and '53 World Championships to F2 rules because of a "fait accompli": Alfa Romeo decided to retire after the '51 season because the 158/159 series was no loger feasible for improvements, and apart from Ferrari nobody could even touch it. The raging rise in running costs allowed the less expensive Formula 2 class to be way more popular and the organizers were reportedly having way more profits on that category because of the higher turnout when compared to F1. The French organizers stated that all foreseeable racers for '52 were to be run on F2 rules since "nobody would see a Ferrari solo" (Motor Sport Magazine), causing the Belgians, the Germans and the Italian organizers to follow suit. This made the FIA decide in a rush that the World Championship would be run on F2 rules because it was either that or having no races at all.
