I have this 08 STI my self. Live in Norway, and do alot of trackdriving on ice lakes. As far as i can see, the evo is a great car. More track-orientated.On snow track, i dont thing they feel much different because of less traction.Its more about the tyres (grip and friction) The 08 STi is more comfy and soft, also compared to the my prevous Hawkeye. Yet its still very fast. If you like like agresive Track-driving, buy evo or later STi`es, Like more soft and comfy, buy 08-14 Sti. Both cars are great. Dont hate the other brand, get to know and understand it... And DO NOT EVER drive summer-tires on snow. EVER! Just a tip from a snowmonkey!

the evo was able to power out of corners better than the sti because they put the sti in intelligent mode. doesnt make sense at all to put a car in its fuel economy setting when you're doing a performance based test.... i have a 08 sti and the difference between intelligent and sport sharp is night and day. not to say the evo wouldnt out perform the sti anyways but they never really gave it a fighting chance to begin with...

The summer tire comparison was stupid and pointless if they're not 1:1. For people wondering about the stats and info every test was extremely close, but here's the breakdown: -on Ice in winter tires the Sti is quicker to 40 and 60, but slower to 80 than the Evo -the Sti stopped shorter from 60-0 and 40-0 -Evo was quicker on the figure 8 -Evo had better lateral acceleration -Sti was quicker around the handling course So these test results would indicate that the Sti barely edges out the Evo. The problem with all of these tests is that their validity is predicated on the settings being optimal. If only one car was set up right for the tests, or neither were then it invalidates the results. Probably the most important takeaway here is that the two of these cars are so close performance wise that you can't really go wrong with either one.
@ryuronin9209 жыл бұрын
+grgmys Both great cars! I'd own both and do own a 2009 Ralliart. Which has the X engine (tdo4 turbo instead of tdo5) the MRs SST and the X drivetrain minus the AYC in the rear diff. Great car in the winter and handles 12" of snow no problem. Going to save up and get an STI or Rex sometime as well.

You are right there, Subies from 08 and some 09 have known problems blowing engines with very low mileage. This is an exception and must not be confused with long term reliability. Cars having that problem are still covered by the warranty since occurs at very firsts 10k-20k miles.

it depends on the dccd setting on the centre diff... i think with 65 rear and 35 front you would have less understeer [Nissan GTRs have 30 front, 70 rear] I think the understeer comes from [49 front, 51 rear stock setting or 50/50 lock but i think on the road the 50 would destroy the diff] so i think most fun, or just burn outs on the street, 35/65 would do wonders but would probably want a 1.5 way LSD on the rear to help out

being an evo owner it makes sense why an evo would be better in snow. the "fully symmetrical AWD" that subaru uses is great on the road but when your on a slippery surface you would want the power to shift around to get the best traction like the AYC that an evo has
@rm-film12 жыл бұрын
Very good Snow/Ice review! Very honest, I can clearly see that they weren't payed off by Mitsubishi to talk down on Subaru. That often happens sadly. I personally Prefer Subaru, BUT I would never say no to an Evo either. These cars are both extremely great and they deliver all the fun needed for the right person.
@rangerover06sc13 жыл бұрын
@lepps5555 I would say the exact opposite. In slippery conditions having all wheels spinning equally is more important then having the majority of torque going to the outside wheel. Thats because it snow, its the wheel with the least amout of traction, unlike it is on pavement. What you want is lots of locking. That gives you more stability and traction. That is what the system in the subaru is designed for, where as the system in the evo is designed for on road agility.

I'm glad I bought my STI. The EVO needs to class up if they want people to pay 33k+ for a decent model. With some sway bars(mine are 26mm whitelines F/R) the STi is just as "hard" as the EVO. I can understand if you don't like the hatchback looks though; I just happen to love the old Delta Integrales, Audi Quattros and Ford Escort Cosworths.
@juamiso15 жыл бұрын
Read with attention: Test settings: 1. SI-drive in intelligent. Right decision!, on snow you do NOT want 400Nm of torque and 300HP. You can not transfer them to the ground anyway! 2. DCCD full lock. You want that on low µ surfaces. Regarding superiority SubaruVsEVO: Subie+ 2.5L Boxer engine Subie+ Reliability mechanical AWD EVO+ Active Yaw (superior AWD) EVO+ SST TwinClutch, faster gearchanges EVO- SST is new developed (less reliable) EVO- AYC has lots of potential problems... Decide4you!
@9dewittk12 жыл бұрын
There is a lot of reading out there that "I" mode does provide smoother acceleration in slippery conditions. However, I think once you get better tires than the stock sport SP 600's, "S" mode is the way to go in the lower gears and then switching to S# after you have some space to drive. On my stock tires I was sliding all over the road in just a light rain and I often would use "I" mode. The stock tires are worthless on slick roads.

Well, I own an STI. We all know the difference between both: AYC vs Symmetrical AWD. AYC is an active system vs a a more passive (only mechanical) system. It's true, it's easier to drive with an active system like AYC (on any type of surface), but it does not mean that the result makes a faster car. You have to work more with the STI. For me, the STI is bit more pure (less electronic) and the EVO more enjoyable. With some mods you can really get two really good sport cars. Cheers.

@rocketloncherboy11 жыл бұрын
The reason why they chose the hatch is because it would be heavier and would have more down force grip then the sedan, resulting in more grip but, i agree the sedan should have a go it would have more power and possibly could be better then the hatch.

The the tire symbol with the explanation point is the universal symbol for TPMS. It is not uncommon for people to not incorporate the TPMS sensors on their snow tires due to cost. When I got snow tires for my Mazda Speed3 it was and additional 50 dollars a tire for them to install the TPMS sensors. Sense this was a test I would imagine that they did not install the sensors, it could also mean that the tires are under inflated or over inflated.

OK as an STi owner and a huge evo fan I must say this is bias against the subby.... I live in northern Ohio my car stays on all season tires that suck on dry and on snow and ice lmfao but leaving the STi in Intelligent mode is cutting the throttle, boost, steering, and breaking it was just to limited to perform... the evo set on gravel was a good choice tho, and I must say good choice of winter rubber!!! Sport Sharp is better in the snow. In Intelligent you don't have enough power and throttle response is not as good. It's meant for economy and city driving in Intelligent. lol. I think turbo drops to 2 psi or so on my "I" map.
@Highjak8612 жыл бұрын
Just because a vehicle has snow tires doesn't mean there isn't ever a loss of traction. Why do you think a vehicle with traction control is faster off the line in the snow 9 times out of 10 than the same vehicle without? This is a similar concept, but on a smaller scale. I used to have an 08 and would run it in I mode during the winter because it was easier to maintain traction and therefore actually move the vehicle. So back to my original point, I mode is not hurting the STi in this "test".
@ecko874715 жыл бұрын
The cars you see in rallies are not factory stock. They are considerably lighter, have numerous (not street legal) upgrades and are driven by drivers who are much more skilled than most drivers. I would say that one of these cars (stock) would be better suited for snowy conditions than an "old man car" as you put it because it isn't as heavy and has a better power to weight ratio. (A 2009 Suburban weighs 6300 lbs with 340 torques and a 2009 STi weighs 3300 lbs with 310 torques)

@minxlabrada I think my EVO is very reliable the only time stuff has broken is when I started moding it and getting a lot more power out of it. so far everything has worked great except for the clutch but with 400+ hp and 6500 rps launches it was bound to break. I don't see alot of stock EVOs most are getting moded so stuff breaks but a lot of people do get STis and keep them stock so they seem rliable

Zero, you're indeed wrong... the new STI has a twin-scroll turbo, so that doesn't make it twin-turbo. Moreover, it's easier to make the evoX slide, that doesn't make it less or more stable. Probably that's because the STI tends to understeer more than the lancer even on gravel or tarmac. Again, that doesn't make STI an understeering car, just that it has a bit different setup and you have to flick a bit harder when you turn in to make it oversteer/slide/whatever.

The snow setting in the Evo gives a front wheel bias, This video wasn't very informative however I think they were basically trying to see which car was more fun to drive in the snow. Assuming that's the sort of thing you're into, I would say you'd have more fun with the Evo if it was in gravel mode, as it would be a lot easier to drift around an icy turn (due to the power being equally split front-rear in gravel mode).

I understand your way of thinking when you hastily think of ballsy acceleration, snow and tire spinning. However, I can assure you that "I" mode doesn't do anything in this situation besides hinder performance. Why? Because of the snow tires. Putting snow or gravel tires on any turbo AWD vehicle completely changes the scenario. It would be like cutting the horsepower back on a snow mobile. Look at the you tube video Evo versus Skiers. A gentler throttle response wouldn't help at all.
@zeroflat2415 жыл бұрын
