True. Most Saab drivers are handsome. They wanted to be unique. I owned a 2008 9-5 Aero. The car was fast on the highway. Only problem was the head gaskets. But honestly it was a pleasure to drive. To be honest I recommend a 2007 Volvo S60 T5 or 2.5t for someone who needs a first car. They have bullet proof head gaskets. And plus the T5 has the same speed performance as the Saab 9-3 or 9-5 Aero. These Volvos have also the same mid range acceleration like the 2004 Subaru STI or 2004 Audi S4. I used to be a car sales manager when I was younger and I can tell you that. The owner of the car dealership was russian and he was very cool. Volvo S60R 2006 2007 and Saabs Aero and bimmers were selling good in Englewood Colorado.

I've heard stories, apparently GM restricted SAAB's engineers on quite a bit, even led to the brief production of the Saab 9-4x, only Mexican built Saab ever
@1rstGear4 жыл бұрын
All of you guys are a bit short sighted. Yes GM defunded the company, but had you guys cared to do some research, you find the real reason SAAB ceases to exist as we all knew it, is because of their own stubborn attitude about the way they designed their vehicles. If the parent company that pays your bills says do these things this way, and you proceed to blow the budget to make the car the way you want it, then you're gonna piss them off. Do it continuously and you're eventually gonna need a new investor. SAAB has been owned by: SAAB A.B. Scania Fiat Alpha Romeo Spyker General Motors And currently, BiAC. Every Company including SAAB A.B. (the aircraft division of SAAB) bankrolled SAAB automotive division, and every last one of them sold SAAB for the exact same reason. They didn't want to bankrupt the parent company. SAAB was NOTORIOUS for blowing budgets over design changes to existing platforms which they felt were inferior. Perhaps that's part of the draw to SAAB. They were a no compromises auto maker that always did things their own way. I hated seeing them go when they did too. The then new 9-5 was a super sexy machine. But to solely blame GM for the company going defunct is bunk. SAAB left a sea of empty wallets in their wake in the quest for perfection when they signed deals to parent companies to agree to use existing platforms with minimal modification, to save money and help them survive as well as make the parent company some money to boot. They never did stick to their agreement, and when the parent companies start losing money, they cut their losses and move on. Hopefully they learned a lesson in business partnerships out of it all and BiAC can keep them on the map a while longer, but SAAB going under was their own fault. They literally placed the noose around their own neck and proceeded to willingly leap off the chair .....

I had the first (1985) 9000 in Scotland, bought used at five years of age. Rose Quartz was the imaginative name of the paint colour. Mine used leaded fuel and was rated at 175bhp, not 160. It was fast and comfortable - and economical too, with MPG figures way better than quoted here. (U.K. gallons are bigger than US ones) On leaded fuel its performance was noticeably zippier, without slipping the clutch it was quite capable of breaking traction in second as well as first, (which I didn't make a habit of) but tyres were far from cheap. It had an interesting label on the driver side eye shield. "If it is necessary to cruise the car at any speed over 150mph the tyre pressures should be increased by (I think it was) 10%." But as I enjoy having an actual driving licence, I never explored the need for this... I liked it so much I followed it with 2 more, the second an unblown 2L engined XS and then a 9000 CSE 150bhp low pressure turbo. which was less exciting than the first but in real terms a more pleasant car overall. I sold that one when the miles got to 186k and eight years of excellent service. Now in 2021 if I could find a good example of a 9000 turbo I might be tempted to revisit old times, now I'm old and only do limited miles annually. But like I'll never have another motorcycle I guess another 9000 is most likely in the same class. Nice to dream about but probably an unwise thing to make into reality... I used to drive annually to the South coast, from here a distance of about 530 miles. In these big Saabs I used to arrive after about ten hours or so at the wheel and feel comfortably fresh. The only cars I owned that I can say that about. A terrific driver's car all round.

I would go and pick this car up from his home and take it back to the dealer, change the tires over and take it back to his home!! What a great guy he was too, very friendly.. Eventually Teemu was traded to Annaheim, the dealer got the car back and it sat on the showroom floor in Winnipeg and no interest in a used Saab.. Suddenly someone from Vancouver was interested in it, as soon as they called the dealer and heard it was previously Teemu's car as an added bonus, the guy said sold!!!!

I had a 1990 9000 Turbo, what a great car. Had an amazing amount of room with the seats down. When the turbo came on it was like a rocket. How can it be that this car is almost 30 years old?? Make it stop....!!! Seriously, what a corker this Saab was for its day! Fast, aggressive styling, an advanced motor, good handling and ride, and a roomy, beautifully restrained cabin. My favorite Swedish car, until the Volvo 850 Turbo. I'm very curious about the choices of alternatives that MW suggested though - the Volvo 740 Turbo, okay maybe, but an Infiniti Q45? I don't think potential buyers of either the Q or the 9000 were cross-shopping each other very much. I would have thought a BMW 5-series or Audi 90 might have been more realistic alternative choices for this very desirable car (to me).

GM offered SAAB a lifeline that SAAB refused. SAAB had never been very profitable and couldn't afford the enormous costs of R&D. It was a niche manufacturer that relied on collaborations with other manufacturers to get new product to market. When General Motors arrived they offered SAAB parts and components from OPEL and other GM divisions. Had SAAB taken what was offered , like Audi and Porsche do with VW components , and developed them they could have made a competitive luxury car that sold at a profit. Instead they insisted on re-engineering everything thus pushing the development costs too high for a car to sell in the market that they were active in. They were never a top tier luxury car. SAAB committed suicide by hubris.

The first car I ever bought was a certified preowned 2006 SAAB 9-3 which I still love to this day. With that said, I wish I got the "true" SAAB before GM ultimately ran the brand into the ground. Even so, my 2006 was a great car except for some of the interior components. I ended up trading it in on a Volvo S60....

So one of these new with a standard transmission would cost $62,000 in 2020 US dollars. Really makes you appreciate the variety of cars on the current (used) market

Loved James May/Top Gear's Saab/Alfa limo, which was this model Saab and a 90's Alfa 159. Never knew the two cars were the same damn thing, since we never had the Alfa version here in the states.

The 9000 shares platform with the Alfa 164 which was available in the US from 1990 until Alfa left in 1995. There even is a Motorweek review on the 1994 Alfa 164 on KZbin. The 159 came out in 2005.

I'm shocked to realize that 30 years old cars look more desirable than 2020 models
