Sometimes I hate KZbin so much. Mark where the hell have you been. This is the single best model 3 suspension video on KZbin. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I absolutely love the small details you did including the body roll video from outside. Fantastic. Please do us a favour. Find another LR and do the same video comparing stock and the coilovers. I've been reading so much and was all sold on the springs. But now I know where I'm going. I'm getting my Model 3 P in a month and am doing all the research now. I basically do not want to affect the ride compared to stock. Ive had a Lexus with coilovers and also got an Evo with ohlins and I do love it. But for the model 3 I actually will not go for a harsher ride but would like to get it to sit right. These seem like the only real solution for this I presume? So these compared to the stock model 3 performance should he a good upgrade in that regard you think? Thank you again and please keep them coming.

Hey, Thanks Piotr! Maybe this summer I'll do a comparison with a stock model 3 and/or a Perf model. Yes, so far this is the best option for lowering your tesla without making the ride more harsh. Setting the dampers makes a huge difference with the MPPs. I will never buy just lowering springs for a car again... I haven't been in a P3 so I don't really know how the ride compares but I'm guessing you will be able to get a much better handling suspension with the same level of firmness. If you're up for it, check out my install video - also very detailed.

@@mmark300 Thank you for the detailed reply. Actually a great comparison would be your car and a M3P as this would show what these can do compared to Teslas performance option. Price wise obviously the LR with MPP coilovers is much cheaper and LR is already a very quick street car for most people. Definetly watching all of your videos. Thank you again.

Great review. I'm waiting for my set to arrive. When you tried a full comfort setting, was the ride softer than stock (even though it had body lean)?
@mmark300
@mmark300 3 жыл бұрын
What I think makes ride comparisons difficult is the fact that the stock springs are variable rate so can feel more comfortable/soft when driving slowly and hitting very small bumps, but then become much more uncomfortable as the car hits larger bumps or when the suspension is compressed for other reasons (many people in the car, cornering, etc). The reason for this is that the stock springs start to depend on the bumps stops, which increase the effective spring rate very rapidly. Under all conditions, the MPP suspension will feel much better overall. At full comfort it may feel very slightly more firm/sporty than stock with very small bumps, but it will feel so much better with larger bumps and when more loaded. The initial turn-in and responsiveness is so much better - I couldn't believe how noticeable it was and I was barely moving the wheel at low speeds. Then the cornering ability is also drastically improved. And finally, the car looks SO much better.

Excellent Mark!! Fantastic review from a layman’s perspective. The two ride heights really is something most of will try…how much is too much? type of thing. Tons of fun and the slalom comparisons were equally helpful. It is my understanding now that the lower ride height will require a realignment adjusting toe and anything else?
@mmark300
@mmark300 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks - I may do a video on getting alignments done whether your Tesla has been lowered or not. After 15k miles one of my tires was way more worn on the inside than the others. Turned out my right front toe was at -0.32. This is WAY off (should be close to zero). My car was stock, no accidents, etc. After the new suspension I only had my alignment done once, after the second lowering. They adjusted the front toe slightly, but it was not that far off (maybe -0.03). Front camber can't really be adjusted much, but there is some play in the stock mounting bolt openings that can be used to help a bit. My front camber was -0.08 (very close to the limit at -1.0), which is not bad considering how much lower the car is. Rear camber was also still in spec, but I told them to adjust it to -1.4 (MPP recommended) only because I spent good money on the adjustable rear camber arms! :)

First, fantastic video and appreciate all of the detail. Unfortunately I arrived here as I am having issues with my M3P and the MP Comfort Coilovers (non-adjustable) and driving here in Chicago. After install and admittedly a rather low ride height (665mm ground to fender) the ride quality is just terrible. Driving the car on the highway (90/290, etc.) consistently bounces and I feel like I am a bit of a bobble head. As mine are non adjustable, is the low ride height the issue? Will setting the perch 20mm below the MP recommendation improve ride quality? About to give up and go back to stock. Any tips would be helpful.
@mmark300
@mmark300 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! What do you mean by bouncy? Usually bouncy means that the dampers are shot and the car keeps bouncing from uncontrolled springs. Assuming the dampers aren't bad, I don't think changing the ride height would change the ride quality much because the springs are not variable rate, they should be constant. A couple of things you have to keep in mind - one is that all suspensions and tires will feel more stiff when the temperature drops (winter) and the damper fluid thickens. And then check your tire pressure - the Tesla recommended 42 lbs makes a much more rough ride. Are you on 19's or 20's? 20's will always feel rough... Your only real option would be to try to raise the suspension back up and see how it feels. The next option would be to try the adjustable version of these coilovers. Setting the dampers to soft makes a very noticeable difference in ride quality.

Mark, again, great video. Were you able to determine, on the front and rear, what a turn or each mm of movement in adjustments equal to in ride height? I started at 69F and 22R and although the car looks great, I think it could stand to come down another 1/4-1/2”.
@mmark300

Thanks! I don't know how many mm each turn represents but each mm of movement of the perch should equate to one mm of overall height adjustment of the car. Keep in mind that the suspension will settle over time.

New subscriber. Have you noticed any unusual tire wear now that you’ve driven on coils for some time? Also, I am only looking for a mild drop and so I am considering the comfort coil over (non-adjustable) over the adjustable. Is the dampening factor that much more worth it, in your opinion? I am a total newbie for suspension work. Read somewhere that adding the camber arms were important for tire wear, so I am considering MPP’s rear camber arms as well. Thanks!
@mmark300
@mmark300 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for subscribing! No additional tire wear, but I had my alignment checked after I installed them. Did you see that part of the video? (maybe it was on my install video, check that). I didn't need the camber arms even after lowering a lot, so I really wouldn't recommend buying them unless there's some strange issue or you're tracking the car. I like being able to adjust the dampening but it's not a quick adjustment and I usually end up leaving it alone for months. If you live in a northern area you may want the ability to adjust to soften in the winter as the colder makes it feel much more firm. I also wanted full stainless which only the adjustable has.

Hi Mark! First thank you for your videos! I was able to install my comfort coilovers this weekend by watching your video. After watching your videos, I decided to lower my car by 10mm more than recommended settings compared to your 20mm. I’m still scraping on speed bumps. The front bumper doesn’t scrape but the middle of the car bottoms out on the speed bumps. Do you think this will ruin the battery or anything below? Did you raise your car up a little bit? Or still at 20mm lower?
@mmark300
@mmark300 3 жыл бұрын
Awesome, glad my videos helped! I still have mine 20mm lower than suggested and haven't bottomed on anything as long as I go slowly. Are you rolling over bumps too quickly? Aside from the actual armor, there are three steel support rails under the battery box that would first hit anything like a fairly even speed bump. Look underneath and see what is hitting and how bad. If anything is getting more than surface damage, I would probably raise it up... The only other major concern is if you hit anything like a fairly large rock. The front of the battery pack, underneath the front cover, contains a few coolant inlets that could be damaged. Breaking one of the lines would be bad, but breaking one of the inlet connectors would be really really bad. From what I understand these connectors are part of the battery box and can't be individually replaced, meaning that the whole battery would need to be replaced. I was actually working on my own aluminum connector protectors, but I decided to just buy the aluminum skid plate that mountain pass sells. It feels like good insurance...

@@mmark300 Thanks for the advice Mark! I spoke with Jesse and learned today that the recommended settings for their Comfort Coilovers is to get our cars lowered to 128.5mm measured from the floor to the battery. OEM performance models measure at 145mm from floor to battery. Initially when I installed my coilovers last weekend, I thought following recommended settings was going to lower my car just to around Performance models, so I decided to go 10 mm lower. Now my car sits 118 mm from floor to battery. After reading his email, decided to raise my car up to recommended settings which is still lower than performance models.

@@josephpark5770 Ah, ok. I wasn't sure what height the performance models are when I made the video. It's hard to tell just by looking at another Tesla when they have different wheels and tires. The same suspension height settings will yield different battery heights if the overall tire diameters are different, especially when the gap between the tire and fenderwell will also be smaller.

I know the batteries were protected by 1/4 in ballistic grade Aluminum on the model S so I would think the model 3 would be the same. Then, if you look at the underside, there are 3 raised rails that would scrape first if it was something like a speed bump.

When you adjust the height, can it be set to max height? I want to have a local garage install it in my 18 M3P, but they barely can get the lift under with stock height. Can the height be set to the same as factory or higher? My thought is I'll have them set the height to maximum (hopefully as high or higher than factory) and then get it home, jack up with my low profile jack, remove the wheel and lower it with the adjustment then. If I need to have any work done by them, I'd have to repeat the process, but would at least be able to still have the local garage do it rather than drive an hour away and pay more.

I think so but not positive. Factory height is not low so not sure why that garage shouldn't be having an issue. And they should be able to compensate by driving up on something to get the lift underneath. I'm always a little leary of shops that can't figure out some basic issues like this. Maybe this place can't bc of how their lift operates, but still...

Lowering a car does not automatically improve suspension performance in the area of comfort.

How's daily driving been with 6 clicks stiffer?

Very Noticeably stiffer, of course, haha. It's something that you can get used pretty easily, though, and it's worth it if you like a better handling car. If the little bumps bother you, drop the tire pressure.

Either way the car's getting lowered, so pick your reason :)

My man do you still have and enjoy these adjustable coil overs? I’m about to purchase these and I’m trying to get a 2inch drop on model 3 performance. Any info would be appreciated

Yep, still enjoying them. Only complaint is that I wish they were easier/ quicker to adjust. Other than that no issues.
