The hardest part for me, John is the weekends. All week I can eat awesome and train etc and focus on work. When the weekend comes, I like to enjoy one night out with my wife for a nice dinner, or even combine that with a higher calorie breakfast with pancakes. I’ve learned that I believe I can do this as long as I don’t go overboard. For a while I was blowing out my weekends because of how deprived I was during the week. So now I give myself Saturday to be a little over, but that’s it. It’s the only way for me to do this and still not cause marital problems.

Yes you can get shredded naturally. I’ve done several times. I’m almost 57 and I have been shredded in my 30s, 40s and 50s. Key is it takes hard work. What worked for me is fasting in the am until mid afternoon 3 times a week, stair climber ( do not get off until you are dripping wet) and staying on your meal plan. As we all know realize your strength may suffer. Drugs which I have never taken just makes it easier and faster but lead to medical issues. I had one cheat day with my gf on saturdays.

i've stayed shredded for 2 years. i'm natural. i work as an actor model. i fast or eat small until about 5pm, have a small protein/carb meal.. next meal is only green beans and broccoli.. to fill me up until about 10:30pm and my final meal is 200g oats with butter, cinnamon and honey + 1kg of greek yogurt. my macros end up about 200P 300C 70F or more like 2500 cal..because most time i never hit that carbs number.. i have never felt like a cheat meal other that some really fatty cuts of meat or protein bars. i have not changed my caloric intake for nearly 2 years. i don't do refeeds or cheat meals, don't ever feel like them..what i do instead is take days off or do easy cardio longer durations. my cardio is 1hr every other day. high and low intensity. weights 2x per week. i'm finding it's peaks and valley's thing and the leaner i've gotten the less intensity i need on cardio... i know that sounds backwards but 1hr moderate intensity does it for me now. i add in a few hard 5 min bursts on the precor arc trainer. it's a very simple easy diet for me to follow. sounds crazy but i feel quite strong and good doing this.. much better than when i was trying to follow 6x meal per day kind of plan with meal prep etc...never again.

Studies have shown that fasted exercise increases lipolysis (more ATGL, less insulin) while protecting muscle with increased GH/IGF-1. Also, up-regulated autophagy (SIRT/AMPK) from fasted training conserves and recycles protein, so you don't need as much. Therefore, you should NOT eat before or during exercise. I've found I can build muscle eating 50 g of protein, 1300 total calories, per day with intermittent fasting and a ketogenic diet.

When it comes to keeping your relationships intact, I'd like to really stress the importance of time. Take a minute to think. The parts of your brain that react most strongly to stress, like the amygdala, tend to do their work quickly. Take a minute to think, you give your prefrontal cortex time to step in, and it generally results in better outcomes. This is particularly important during when your cognitive load is high. If you've done an intense workout, you've performed a mentally challenging task, and you're on a heavy diet, this is a recipe for disaster, and you really need to take your time, tread lightly, and find a minute to relax.

I feel like you've really touched upon a point that you brought up in Omar & Eric's podcast that you featured on. I loved this video. So many important information. Can't thank you enough for it! Before I even watched the video, this came to my mind after reading the title: "Of course you can get ripped naturally. The real question is: can you STAY ripped naturally all year around?" - The reason asking the "all year around" question is that because in our modern society you always have the visual stimulus of seeing ripped "influencers" all year around, people tend to develop the feeling that everybody has to look like that all year around (even if most of those influencers don't even look like that always). So, to answer this second question, I think you even can stay ripped all year around, but for that you really need exceptional genetics, disciplined and consistent work in the gym, and even also luck. To explain the luck part: you need to be lucky to have major life disasters avoid you.

Once i give fasting a try, in 5 months, i have full on 6pack while never pay that much attention to diet, still a normal healthy diet but never thought i was dieting to lower body fat. I just ate the same & just fast once or twice per week. All of that without losing muscle. I was heavier back then with define abs than im currently. Now,if i tried to cut down again I've always loss quite substantial amount of muscle. Definitely going to fast again. Thanks for reminding me John. 👍 you're the best

John, the reasoning for fasted training is that the body is depleted of glycogen and starts using fat for fuel (we are talking 16-24 hours of fasting, so the body is still not turning to eating muscle yet). However, your argument about eating around training times to preserve the protein synthesis also makes a lot of sense. Perhaps, the two styles can be used during different phases of training - fasted training when cutting, and "fueled" training when bulking?! Idea for a video - clean bulking - how to do it (how much time do we need, how to set the weight goals, what to do if the fat % goes a bit out of control, do we start cutting immediately after finishing the Bulking season, etc). THANK YOU!

Hey there John, thanks so much for all the info which is like referring to the elephant in room. Being ripped naturally i feel is easier if your happy being a certain weight and easier in a calorie deficit, however when calories are increased to add more muscle mass by increasing overload, hitting the gym harder there is always an element of increased fat to and the cut starts all over again with more HIT. At 44 weighing 185, I’d be happy with 15% buts its a long road because metabolic rate is lower let alone the natural decrease of test. But I’m still gonna pursue my goal and enjoy a healthy diet. Keep up the great content! 👍

I will say that as far as fasted training goes, I have made insane strength gains since I began training at 5am fasted. I personally feel like the hormone increase from working out right upon waking overcomes being fasted. I do use a preworkout product and on heavy days I begin drinking cluster dextrin and eaas once I finish my compound exercises. I've worked up to a 400lb bench and 600lb squat training this way. Almost immediately upon the workout finishing I have a protein shake and within an hour after that I have a larger breakfast. With this method I have had great success in the gym and my recovery has felt great! I have tried fasted training later in the day and I felt like dog shit which led me to believe in the added wake up hormones really helping the process!

Hey John, do you ever plan on touching on the subject of Mike Mentzer's HIT style training or minimalist-style training? I think that would be a great video topic that would interest a lot of folks

HIT is the onlyyyy way to train!!! Especialllyyyy if you are natural!!!!
@matthewellis86265 жыл бұрын
I wish someone would address this style of training. Always thought it was Mike's way of giving you the optimal way to train as a natural (Semi). Only way to Recover from Intense training sessions ( misunderstood by most as lazy training ) Of Course it's not optimal ( enhanced ) because of the ability to Recover. IDK

Hello sir. This is one of the best videos I have watched about bodybuilding. Come to think of it we about 5 to 10 % of people who supposed to be on gear (pro bodybuilders) in the gym the rest are supposed to be natural. Information that is normally put out is mainly for enhanced athletes which I find has a negative impact because natural guys end up taking the advice and want to use that and it doesnt work actually it even gets them fatter. Sir if you can do this more advice more the natural athletes they need that

I started intermittent fasting and running to get more lean and my vascularity is just insane! My arms and chest are starting to look like a roadmap NATURALLY. I played the size game for many years but now..I think I'd prefer the vascularity rather than the bloated thick look. And I'm healthier :-))

and I sleep like a baby when I go to bed hungry. Been IF for years now and I see no negative effects working out fasted after spending my whole adult life doing things like I was told by eating pre and post workout. I think our body changes when being exposed to hunger everyday. The mainstream nutritition standards just dont apply
