My father always had an enlisted soldier under his command who was older than him for this very reason. The wisdom you can get from your enlisted guys is what makes an officer great. Not the other way around. Wish more officers knew this....

I recently quoted this to my boss. He did the exact same thing. He said I don't know. It killed any hopes I had for him to lead our department. Now I just feel like we are out on the open ocean with no rutter. It's a damn Shame. I hold this speech so close to my heart. It means alot to me.

isn't that a very bad command philosophy though? I mean sure in an emergency commanders shouldn't say they don't know, but what about mobilizing the crew to think and see which idea works best?

This scene is not about the Skipper knowing everything. It is impossible to know everything. But he does need to exercise good judgement and act decisively under trying conditions. Leadership is avoiding “paralysis by analysis”, leading from the front, and owning everything you do.
@bob1986 Жыл бұрын
It's not even necessarily that as much as not admitting to the people under you you don't have a plan because then you're basically saying "Hell if I know. We're all probably gonna die." He didn't even have to lie, even if he just admitted "It's rough but I'm working on something" would be better than telling his men he had no plan.

This reminded me of the 1996 Taiwan Straights Crisis. I was just an enllisted Navy sailor in the CIC of a carrier, and there were junior officers openly disagreeing with one another about the proper action to take in the event China decided to fire at us. I remember thinking to myself "Crap, this isn't good. These Zeros shouldn't be talking about this shit in front of us enlisted guys! At least not like this." It was really awkward and uncomfortable. Fortunately, a CWO4 walked in and with just a look, let those butter bar Ensigns, LTJG's, and LT's know to shut the hell up.

Trivia: originally Lieutenant Tyler was going to notice a picture showing Günter Wässner, the German captain, in uniform, leading him to realize he was the German prisoner.
@seanthornton43824 жыл бұрын
That was also in the book form - - based on the screen play. There was a brief clip in the trailer of the German captain speaking English after being taken prisoner again on the 571. I have wondered what that scene was supposed to be.

For a WWII German U boat, they seem to be in some pretty spacious quarters. I am an Army vet, so I am not familiar as Navy Sailors, but I got the impression that submarines were a tight fit. This looks like a hotel room.

Movie sets are often more "spacious" to accomodate the filming crew and the equipment. :-)
@bob1986 Жыл бұрын
While it's a set which has to be bigger than usual to fit in the filming crew, I believe that's the supposed to be the captain and officers lounge area and not the captains quarters. Chief probably shouldn't be hanging there, but they're a handful of guys on submarine that isn't even part of their forces so I don't believe that was something they were particularly concerned about at that point especially since Tyler is the only officer still alive.
