CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Johnny (Danny Aiello) calls off his wedding to Loretta (Cher), leaving Ronny (Nicolas Cage) free to propose.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
When there's a full moon over Brooklyn, anything can happen, and everything happens in the neighborhood where widowed bookkeeper Loretta Castorini (Cher) lives. First, Loretta agrees to marry a man she does not love, Johnny Cammareri (Danny Aiello), simply because he knows how to propose properly. Before the wedding can take place, Cammareri must visit his dying mother in Sicily. In his absence, Loretta is supposed to try to patch up the differences between Johnny and his brother, bakery operator Ronny Cammareri (Nicolas Cage). Having never forgiven Johnny for indirectly causing the accident that crippled him, Ronny flies into a rage whenever his brother's name is mentioned. He does, however, fall for Loretta like a ton of bricks. After a torrid affair, Loretta tries to avoid Ronny out of respect to Johnny, but he's just too fascinating to resist. Meanwhile, Loretta's father (Vincent Gardenia) is fooling around with his mistress Mona (Anita Gillette), while Loretta's mother (Olympia Dukakis) is wooed by a college professor (John Mahoney). These brief flings are forgiven and forgotten, but there's still the delicate situation of Loretta being in love with her future brother-in-law. A now-classic romantic comedy, Moonstruck won Oscars for Cher, Olympia Dukakis, and screenwriter John Patrick Shanley.

When Nicolas Cage says to Danny Aiello, "Johnny, you're 42-years-old and she's still running your life." I'm thinking, "FORTY-TWO?! He looks 62 -- AT LEAST!"
@Kylopod
@Kylopod 4 жыл бұрын
All the ages of the actors in this film are sort of screwy relative to their characters. Aiello was 54 at the time. Cher was 42 playing a 37-year-old (not a stretch), but Cage was 23--nearly two decades Cher's junior, and more than 30 years younger than Aiello who's supposedly his brother. And while Ronny's age is never mentioned in the film, it seems to be implying he's in his 30s; at least there's no sense in the film that he's fallen for a much older woman, despite the real-life age gap between Cage and Cher. The movie seemed to be pretending they were roughly in the same age range.
@loveanimals6981
@loveanimals6981 4 жыл бұрын
@@Kylopod I felt that Cage's character, Johnny, could have passed as being in his late twenties, to possibly his early thirties in the movie (though apparently he actually 23, when Moonstruck was filmed). Even though, as you said, his age was never mentioned, I always felt that his character was definitely a few years younger than Cher's. But Aiello definitely just doesn't ring true as a 42-year-old AT ALL. I mean, I think that most people seem to age better today than that of the past, but even so...
@Kylopod
@Kylopod 4 жыл бұрын
@@loveanimals6981 What's interesting about Cage is that it's traditional in Hollywood for actors of that age to still be playing teens. And indeed, just a year earlier he was in the time-travel movie "Peggy Sue Got Married" playing both a teen and a middle-aged guy. He had an uncommonly mature look; he almost seemed ageless, like he could have been either 20 or 40. The only clues as to his character's age are that he's said to be the younger brother to Aiello--but not a whole generation younger, we presume--and he was already a baker engaged to be married 5 years earlier. He could conceivably be a few years younger than Cher's character, but if he was supposed to be a decade or more younger, I think it would have attracted more notice by the other characters. There were no "This is weird, I'm old enough to be your mom" moments. Their attraction was treated as if it was the most natural thing in the world, despite the element of cheating. As for Aiello, I dunno.... There are a number of celebrities who have looked considerably older than their real age. Kenny Rogers already looked like Santa by his early 40s. Richard Dreyfuss looked like a man in his 50s by the time he was 35 (due no doubt at least in part to his coke addiction). I remember how astonished I was to find out that John Carroll Lynch in "Fargo" was only 33--he was already mostly bald by then and he could easily have passed for a man of 50.
@loveanimals6981
@loveanimals6981 4 жыл бұрын
@@Kylopod Drefuss SERIOUSLY aged in just a span of four years during the 1970s. He went from really rather boyish looking in American Graffiti (1973), to looking twenty years older probably, by the time he did The Goodbye Girl in 1977, lol. And I've never even thought about how realistically Cage played both younger and older in Peggy Sue Got Married. Really remarkable, the believability in his portrayal at both ages (aided in some part, of course, to hair and makeup). But aging him aside, he just did a truly fine job seeming like a man in his 40s (when in fact he would have been in his early 20s). I've seen so many actors not believably pull this off in acting -- and many times often from otherwise seriously lauded actors. Elizabeth Taylor was always great with the aging-thing (probably very underrated as an actress, actually). Here would have been this seriously beautiful woman at the time, realistically portraying women decades older (as she did in Giant and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?). Again, truly remarkable.
@tonyhughes110
@tonyhughes110 4 жыл бұрын
@@Kylopod Yep. The studio thought Cage was too young and didn't think he was right for the part, but Cher wouldn't do the film unless Cage was her co-star. The rest is history.

Cher was very cute and vivacious in this movie, but I can't see how she won an Oscar for it over the explosive Glenn Close in "Fatal Attraction".
