Glad you found George to do the show, Grant! Very cool, indeed. Mr. Bungle was never going to set the sales charts ablaze and wrack up millions of record sales. Heck, Faith No More’s real “commercial appeal period” only lasted for a few albums. Bungle is FNM to the Nth degree… and then some! Avant-garde is the PERFECT phrase to describe the band. I always considered them “uneasy listening music.” Now, I’m NOT saying Bungle are bad at all; merely hard to understand and perhaps off putting to the general populace at large. The way these cats genre-hop shows off their musicality, whilst also maybe alienating a listener not used to somewhat jarring musical prowess and dexterity. I worked in CD stores throughout the nineties and Mr. Bungle defined the phrase “cult band” better than Phish and Dream Theater combined. They defiantly furrowed their own path and did what they wanted to do, commerciality be darned! Diehard Faith No More and Mike Patton fans made up their fan base. Also, eclectic and adventurous musical souls were in on this unique party, too. The one thing you gentlemen didn’t touch on was the very slight controversy surrounding the first CD. The opening track on their self-titled album was initially titled “Travolta.” After threats of lawsuits from John Travolta’s goons, Warner Brothers changed the song title to “Quote Unquote.” For a brief time, diehards fans of Mr. Patton were looking for the first CD pressing where track number one was called “Travolta.” Another excellent adventure, Grant and George… thanks. Cheers from The Big Apple. Rock Out, Prog On and Pogo! Your clone and mine, ~ The Divine and Dapper Doppelgänger of Davey Cretin, from CRETIN CLASSICS.

Awesome conversation. I heard "Squeeze Me Macaroni" on the radio in 1991, on a show that did 30 minutes of metal. Took me years to get my hands on the album. Remains my favourite song by them to this day.

The only time I saw Mr. Bungle on MTV was Mike wearing the t shirt in the Epic video by Faith No More.

Big fan of Mr Bungle since I discovered Mike Patton with his first Faith No more album. One could list any of MP's side projects too (Tomahawk, Fantomas,..) but if you want something as wacky you must check Dan Swano's Pan-Thy-Monium releases.

I've been a fan of Mr. Bungle since self titled came out, the album I keep coming back to is Disco Volante, then California. I almost never listen to self titled, I just don't think it stands the test of time as much as the others, it's ALL schtick to me. DV to me is more "pure" to me and for all it's chaos, it's very cohesive. And just a personal pet peeve, I think a lot of people make a huge mistake in focusing on Bungle as a Patton project, and end up disappointed as a result. Bungle is highly collaborative.

There IS another band that doesn't sound like the same band from album to album. You should talk about Ween.

The reason I couldn’t be on this show is quite simply I don’t like their music. Weird how that worked out considering we graduated from the same high school. Me in 1970 and Mike in the mid 80’s. I met Mike in 1984 and at that time his favorite album was Metallica:Ride The Lightning. I knew Mike only at The Works from 1984-1988 when he quit to go to San Francisco to eventually join Faith No More. I was shocked to see Epic on tv.

the self-titled was produced by John Zorn, whose Naked City ensemble could fairly be compared to Mr Bungle. particularly, the genre plundering and tight, fast-paced musicianship

I listened to the first two albums and started the third. I'm thinking Zappaesque. Can't give an honest rating because I've only listened to them once. Right now they don't make sense to me.
