One thing I got addicted to while I was pregnant was plain potato chips/crisps and slightly softened vanilla ice cream! I still get cravings for it these days (my last pregnancy was over 30 years ago lol). I introduced it to my bff, one of my old bosses, a neighbour or two...and everyone admits its great. Just soften the ice cream enough to be able to stir it and then crunch a handful - or two depending on the size of the ice cream portion lol - and stir together.....creamy, crunchy, salty, sweet goodness!

Back in the 70's, jam and crisp sarnies were a staple lunch around here. Not Wotsits, it was usually ready salted Walkers (or equivalent). I do like a cheese board but won't have one at a restaurant. I do agree that it should be a starter as well as after the main meal, as not everyone wants desserts.

A cheese board is best eaten immediately after the main course, enabling you to finish your red wine with the cheese before you then move on to dessert. This is the French way.

Watching these combos reminded me of three that I love for different reasons. The first is teacake (as in a breadcake with currants and raisins in), buttered and with salmon paste on top of the butter. It was one I always used to request for my sandwiches when I went on trips with school, so there's a bit of childhood nostalgia there. The second is banana and tomato sauce sandwiches. Butter two slices of bread (with butter, not marge, as that doesn't taste the same at all, although marge/vegan spread alternative is permitted for vegans), slice a banana up into rounds and lay on the buttered bread, then squeeze on some tomato sauce - it's up to you how much you want - then slap on the other slice of bread, cut in half and eat. I "discovered" this one when I was messing about with food combos while I still lived with my parents. I'm glad I liked it, because my Mum wouldn't have been happy at me wasting food, otherwise! The third one is a cooked smoked bacon, brie and white grape toastie. Prepare your bread for the toastie maker, lay the cooked smoked bacon on it, lay sliced Brie over that, then slice up the white grapes and lay them over everything. Add the second slice of bread and close the toastie-maker lid. Cook until the bread starts to brown and is crispy and the cheese is oozing out a bit. Eat them hot but be careful about the molten lava-hot cheese and grapes, otherwise you'll have a blistered mouth and that's no fun at all! I used to help out with a conservation group in Sheffield some years ago and it was then I made this creation. They're good hot, but also go well as cold sandwiches later, when you won't burn your mouth but still have the taste of the individual elements.

I sometimes add a few crisps to a sandwich purely for the crunch texture it adds. The crisps' flavour is often masked by the rest of the sandwich.
@animeartist888Ай бұрын
On the contrary, I tend to add chips to sandwiches that I find rather bland. A favorite combo when on the run is to put cheddar-sour-cream Ruffles onto a ready-made egg salad sandwich. The sandwich is really just egg and mayo on white bread, there's really no flavor to it and the texture is pretty blah as well. The chips add a hearty crunch as well as some much-needed extra flavor. I would also recommend plain salted chips/crisps on a peanut butter and jelly, though. The texture and the saltiness really elevate the experience of eating the boring old staple.

Maltesers are an amazing candy. The first I tried them was when my sister brought them back from the UK. They didn't used to be available in the US, the US version was the Whoppers. But I will say the UK version, the malted milk ball inside was a better quality, and the chocolate on the outside was so much better. We do how have the Maltesers in the US now in stores, but it's still not the same as what I got from the UK. The ones in the US being sold now, are much like the Whoppers version with too much wax in the chocolate and the malted milk ball doesn't have much airiness to it.

@KellyS_77 that sounds interesting but I think l'd prefer the pastry to just taste of pastry, (I love shortcrust pastry). . But I'd try it for sausage rolls, made with short crust pastry. I'd try mixing cranberry sauce into the sausage meat, add some moisture. Best wishes. UK. E♥️, .
@EileenSpeakmanАй бұрын
@KellyS_77 puff pastry is very traditional for savoury dishes but I think of sausage rolls as finger food and puff pastry can break up in the hands, and if it's freshly cooked it's a bit greasy. . I do use it to make cream horns though, using my metal moulds. And apple turnovers. Small cake and pastry forks mean the hands don't get too messy (and I have very small afternoon tea knives (not sharp, but cut the cake into dainty bite size pieces), which keep the pastry under control , and of course they are cold, not hot and greasy. (I could eat one now!). . I think the ritual of afternoon tea is disappearing . Best wishes. E♥️
