Actually, it IS very unusual. It's just a matter of all the cases of a "dark back story" being blamed on such things WHEN THEY ARE PRESENT while most people subject to the same circumstances don't "turn out" that way and there are many others who had a totally pleasant upbringing who demonstrate the same behavior, because it is a product of what is and isn't innate, meaning the presence or absence of a conscience and perhaps something deeper and less material being the reason for that.

I think Charles is mislabeled here. Micha has a dark side,Dutch has a dark side. These are characters that go above and beyond to cause suffering directly, or indirectly as long as it gets them whatever satisfaction or goal they have set. They do it with no remorse or hesitation. Preying on the weak and misguided. While Charles has a tragic past that has hardened him. He's a survivor that questions his place and direction in life. Making the best out of his situations while being loyal to those that earn his respect. Like Arthur he's made more human and likable despite his faults.

I don’t think that was a dark side of Charles smith now let’s say Lenny or Strauss or Josea said somthing joking and he did that we could call that a dark side. Micha bell is a punk and every one knows that and that’s the last person your not gonna put hands on when he speaks to you that way. If it was mostly anyone else in the gang I would agree with the dark side. Charles proves to be nothing but a solid character through the whole story all the way to the end when he mentions wanting to start a family. I don’t see any of that calling out the darkness in him. But good conversation all the same 👍
