7 Types of People At The Range
shop.mrcolionnoir.com/
I've spent an unprecedented amount of time at gun ranges. It goes without saying that there are a ton of personality who find themselves at a shooting range at some point in their life. However, some characters stand out more than others so here's my list of the seven types of people you'll see at the range that stand out most to me.

@@rando1365 No way! :) I'm all for protests, but the CHAZ zone has turned into a societal and political shit show. I'm one of the very rare people living here who is both a conservative and also was actually born in this state (less than half the population in WA was actually born here and that is dropping fast). Every day my Wife and I discuss leaving this state, only thing holding us back is that we have close family/friends here.

The best compliment of my life was when I took my brother in-law shooting for his first time and walked him thru how to do everything safely, when we went to pay our range fees the owner/operator charged me as a trainer, when I asked him if he made a mistake he was completely confused and legitimately thought I was one telling me he would hire me in a heartbeat if I got my cert

Yeah, I'm looking at joining a private range even though it is 50 minutes away. It is outdoor, there are several shooting areas, and everyone who joins is vetted first. The Saturday morning I went for a meet and greet was a decent weather day and there were only a couple shooters at that huge place.

I've approached other shooters - to ask for advice - three times. All were glad to help. As a hapless novice I asked a young woman crack shooter next to me to try my new Glock 19, thinking my problems were the gun. She was a Detroit cop. Hit all bullseyes, and then gave me a 3 minute tutorial. Huge immediate improvement.

I had the Safety Violator to day. He flagged me 3 times and when I called him out on it, he flagged me again. Then he had the balls to say he didn't flag me. He was holding a revolver with his hand over in front of the finger guard, getting burns on his hands. He broke every safety rule, I think we made some new ones today just for him.

I'm becoming the "I genuinely want to know how to shoot type." So a forever student type. I finally get it. I go in for reps, making every shot count. Try to expose myself to firing around other gunfire, not flinching, not blinking, and finally -- making the gun an extension of my being. That last part is the fun part, it creates a real relationship between you and the firearm. All of that is just reps over time.

Here in Ohio we have ODNR(Ohio Department of Natural Resources) outdoor gun ranges. The one in Spring Valley Ohio just south of Xenia has been remodeled and is really nice. The Range Safety Officers are actually Ohio Wildlife Officers who are in fact law enforcement officers. Everyone was really nice and the RSOs were to. I think they are open year round, but the range fee is only 5 dollars for the whole day, 25 dollars for a yearly membership(which you can get at any Rural King gun counter) and you have to bring your own ammo and targets. They have pistol, shotgun, rifle, and even an archery range where you can try out your bows and arrows. If you are ever in Ohio come on over and check them out. Really nice people, and a really nice range. Plus, outdoor ranges are more fun and not as loud as an indoor range which I like as well.

A South Dakota 100 meter outdoor range with my son when a couple of tweens showed and started shooting skeet over our line. We packed to leave and only asked them to stop and secure their guns while I recovered our targets. My then 12yo son schooled them. Being cocky they offered a shotgun to my son, he correctly held the pump and dropped his first ever three clay pigeons. The tweens were more impressed and inquisitive when my son told them of their incorrect posture and holding techniques he'd learned from the book "Tap's Tips". Learning is something you should strive to do everyday, I shun the fools that think they know everything. Everything I do and try I'm proud to say; "I am an apprenctice at!". Im a new shooter and I've only been to the range a few times. It was always my understanding that you just dont approach random people and speak with them while at the stalls. Its hard to hear, and people are working on their own form of training. I've never had anyone approach me at a stall and I didnt know people did that until I saw videos like this. Personally, I wouldnt take it well if someone tapped on my shoulder and tried to strike up a conversation with me while I'm there at a stall. I think it just breaks natural range etiquette.

I’ve found that the “Safety Violator” exist more at the indoor ranges than at the outdoor ranges. When beside people like him, it becomes what I’ve come to call the “shoot and duck” time. You shoot but then have to duck because you realized the novice shooter next to you has placed you at the end of their barreI. I can’t tell you how many times I have been at indoor ranges that I have also become the trainer for those who have NEVER picked up a weapon until that day. It’s easy for me because of my 60+ years of gun experience. Those who run the ranges need to start asking shooters about their shooting experience. If they are not experienced, then off to at least an hour of training they go. Great video as usual, Colion.

I got a story for you guys: I was at the range and was practicing quick mag changes. For this exercise, I only load 3-6 rounds in each of my 4 mags, and I will, at times, load a randomly empty casing to practice jams. I then put the mags (G19) behind my back and mix them up. I put the extra mags in various places, such as my mag holsters and front pocket, in the ready position. So I'm shooting and dropping mags on the floor when the SRO comes up, looks at me and said, "Oh! It's you! How's the shooting?" I said, "Good, I'm just practicing quick mag changes." He looks at me and says, "I figured, but another shooter complained because he said you were dropping magazines on the floor. I KNOW you're a safe shooter, so no worries." LMAO!!!!!

I like the old guy who shows up with a .357 Magnum revolver, doesn't say anything, and proceeds to put all six rounds in the same hole in the center of the target at 25 yards, cylinder after cylinder after cylinder. Then, he polices his area, packs everything up, and leaves. You just know that guy's a good neighbor.

There’s also the ear buster. We once went to the shooting range and we all stopped to the sound of very loud boom coming from a guy shooting a long barreled .357. I thought it was a 50 cal he was shooting. When we got used to his shooting noise, he broke the noise barrier yet again by starting to fire out of what appears to be an elephant gun riffle.

I can think of 3 more: “Bigger = Better” This is the guy who brings the freaking hand cannon that overpowers everyone’s pistols combined. 500 S&M, .44 Magnum, Elephant Pistol (go watch Kentucky Ballistics), etc. They are the ones who try to shock everyone and grab everyone’s attention with that first shot that’s louder than a thunderbolt. They wear shirts to compliment their need for attention. They are sometimes tight fitting shirts two sizes too small to ensure every muscle on their body can be seen. Or they have texts on them like “I’m awesome” or “trust me, I’m an expert”. They are usually the same guys at the gym going for the Professional Bodybuilder look, yell in steroid rage when they finished their third rep of 400lbs, and check themselves out in the mirror and think, “damn, just look at me. I’d suck my own d**k if I could.” “The macho boyfriend and nervous girlfriend” It’s taken weeks, maybe even months of talk; but the boyfriend has finally convinced his girlfriend to go with him to the gun range. And the very second they walk through the door, the boyfriend shows all the different kinds of guns on the walls and is trying to sound like a firearm expert to impress his girl who is barely listening to him and more nervous about what she has agreed too. And when they get to the range, of course, the boyfriend goes first to “show her how it’s done.” Wether he is actually very safe on the range and/or is a good shot is a coin flip. Regardless, when it’s her turn, she doesn’t even get to aim down range until the boyfriend stops her and points out that she is either holding it wrong, her feet aren’t in the right position, she’s leaning too far back, etc. And near the end, the girl is either finally shooting the gun by herself while being about half as nervous as before. Or she has gotten fed up and is just decided to watch her boyfriend shoot the remaining rounds by himself while she texts on social media about how bad her day was and that she wishes she never would have agreed to go. “The yoga breather” This is the guy who takes an unbelievably deep breath right before he takes a shot. Every. Single. Shot. A deep breath comes right before it. It sounds like he’s training for a marathon in the Olympics. It sounds like he can suck a golf ball through a garden hose. Other shooters can hear how loud he’s breathing in and out with these obnoxiously loud breaths even while they wear their hearing protection. Even while the “bigger is better” guy is shooting! This is the person who usually does some last minute research on how to shoot tighter groups and watches KZbin videos and is suddenly a Military Sniper. And the creators have 100-300 subscribers. Is he going to pass out? Does he really need a smoke? Who knows… Who cares.

Last time I was at the range there was a slightly older couple next to me and my grandpa. They noticed that I was struggling with loading bullets on the mag of the glock I was using. The guy offered to let me use his mag loading device and then was talking to my grandpa and I about the guns we were using. We talked about how I didn’t enjoy shooting that glock and they said the ladies gun she was using was perfect for someone like me and told me to try it. I shot a few bullets and liked the gun better. They gave me a list of guns to look at when buying my own and when we left they gave me the ammo loader tool. I felt pretty bad about shooting some of their ammo and offered some in exchange but they said they were happy to get young girls into shooting more and left. Honestly really sweet couple

The other day I went to the angeles forest shooting range ressiplying building and met some great folks. Sometimes people can talk too much lol or not know when to let you go but sometimes you meet great individuals with really fascinating stories and such and my favorite is when you learn or exchange knowledge to one another. Nice and welcome people are awesome. It helps you. And then you can pass it on :)

You have to add “The Gamer” - the young guy who has built their dream AR carbine with infrared and visible lasers, 1500 lumen light, flip away magnifier for their Eotech, bipod, forward grip, multi color cerakote and laser engravings to only spend their time hammering away at 5 to 10 yards usually dressed like the younger relative of the poser.

I am the 70 year old navy shooting team guy with the old M1 Garand with the scout scope. bi pod and high tec muzzle brake that rings the 12 inch gong plate 98%+ of the time at 600 yards. When the AR guys can not hit it 50% of the time. with the muzzle brake the AR guys know not to setup right next to me.

I've worked at Range USA for about 4 months. I have seen every single one of these in the first week, being an RSO for a company that encourages new firearm users to go to a range without any sort of educations besides a waiver and safety instructions on the wall. By the time they read that, they already committed a violation that could've killed me or someone else
