Before owning MRE´S were made popular years ago, I grabbed individual components from companies who were selling broken into surplus meal packs to the general public. Doing it this way got me the best of the best parts of the popular and best tasting main dishes, sides, deserts & drinks. It is getting harder and harder finding surplus MRE meals these days that do not cost an arm or a leg.

I really like this meal. Im ok with the skittles, not my fave but I'll eat em. The main is surprisingly cheesy and good on its own. I load it up on the bread and eat it that way. Helps get the bread down. The choc drink is not a highlight but I guess they need the protein. You have a nice enthusiasm for a conglomeration of assorted parts. Yay to the end of case 1, can't wait to see your takes on some of the case 2 offerings.

A “Box A” just arrived... I’m really hyped to crack it open and taste these menus. They all seem quite solid and your reviews give a good perspective on what to expect. I once had the protein chocolate drink with MRE Menu nr. 23 (The one with pizza!) and since I love chocolate flavour it was a great drink for me. Thanks you!

I've only tried the civilian MRE version from Sopacko and I thought it was pretty darn good. I didn't get any cheese sauce but it did come with Italian bread sticks. Tasty.

I admire your enthusiasm for a rather unusual mix of items. It reminds me of the time I ate some corn off a field kitchen. It had a nice smoky flavor. I wondered how they did it. Well the fellow next to me said sarge did you notice they burned the corn? I took another bite then agreed and said to myself dang my taste buds are gone. It is time to go home.

Nothing wrong with those Skittles....that's a citric acid coating to make them extra sour. They're my favorite Skittles and I'll eat them until tongue loses all feeling sometimes.

How does the manufacturer determine what items go into a MRE? Most US MRE’s just seem like a random groupings of food.

They don't. They bid for a contract for X number of years and the government supplies them with the contents. Natick and the Feeding Directorate choose what goes in them. Cheers

I don't think the Skittles are a hot mess. I think they are the sour Skittles that are covered with that crappy sour powder. My kids would love them, and they are the age that corresponds to the the majority of current personnel in-service. I imagine sour Skittles are probably a hit.....(gag).... Not in my day...... -Zed

That would be such a disappointing meal if you were in the field! I am so pleased I am British and we get our awesome ration parks instead! I am not noticing less and less hot drinks in MREs

Even the ORPs have some less than desirable mains in them the good thing is they always seem to change things out. There aren't. I don't think outside of Basic I ever took a messkit out in the field where as most European forces routinely use them. Just kinda of the philosophy of use I suppose.

so fact I learned recently your issues with the sour skittles being to sour is as humans age we lose our "taste" in general for really sour things so that's why it probably popular with a 20 something GI and not you as always this is a generalization and not everyone (obligatory warning i add i do too much political stuff XD) should say i loved getting skittles or any candy i could usually get a easy second main especially the vomlette which I found to be ok and an easy trade for alot of people but i was that guy who liked food and didn't complain as long as i got enough of it so there's that
