We Malaysians and our Singaporean kin do this in every day conversation so it’s nothing really. You’ll see it a lot of you visit both countries. In Malaysia, ordering food in 4 languages in a sentence is common!

Most people who work there just usually describe ourselves as civil servants to strangers - regardless of where in the civil service they work. Or in this case, as “working for the government.” It doesn’t mean anything other than trying not to draw unnecessary attention to their jobs.

Yup, civil servant here! I always just say i work for the government to foreigners (or that I’m a civil servant to locals) cos i dont like disclosing details about my job (like its my business, not anyone else’s, what i do for a living). Plus being in the civil service means we *are* bound by codes of conduct etc which kinda affects the way we can conduct ourselves in public spaces.

Creating a character is part of acting. Obviously learning that character was made up might be upsetting but at the end of the day it's all about intertainment. Yes we fell in love with Uncle Roger thinking he was real but its the same thing entertainers have done literally forever. Let's just enjoy this character for what he is and does.
