I got it checked out a few things and found the PCV system was blocked and had a dead O2 sensor. Replaced the PCV valve and hoses and both 02 sensors and codes cleared and power was normal. Author! Author! This BS goes on all the time. I have a single Mom neighbor who has a Crown Victoria Ford. The car has low mileage & she follows the proper maintenance. She came to me a month or so ago, & asked me what a pull out engine for her car would cost. I told her that I had no idea, but I would call several of the wrecking yards & find out. I asked why she was looking for an engine. The car developed a "knock:'" , & she took the car to a shop & they "checked" the car out & told her that she had a spun connecting rod, & that they could find her a pull out for $5000 or so, & that it would be about $8000 to fix the car. I sat in the car & started the engine, & sure enough there was a "knock". I told her that the knock was NOT a connecting rod, because the knock was lower pitched & had a "thud" instead of a "sharp rap" . I raised the engine RPM's from idle to about 1500 RPM & the knock was still there. I told her that I was now absolutely certain that there was no connecting rod problem I lay down beside the car & had a look under the car . I pointed to a chunk of 2X2 inch stick & pushed the stick under the car & shoved on the end of the stick. The knock instantly ceased. She was shocked, & asked me how I made the knock go away. I told that the exhaust pipe mounting bracket was bent & the pipe was vibrating against the sub frame ! We drove the car to a farm equipment repair man's shop & drove over his pit. He took his oxy-acetylene torch into the pit, , along with a pry bar & heated the bracket & moved the pipe away from the frame, & all was well. The $8000 repair became a $10 repair. BTW, I NEVER patronize ANY "Quick Lube". along with cross threading drain plugs, or breaking the boss in the pan, or not tightening the drain plug, they try to sell you a suite of other "services" ....transmission flush is the first one you can expect. Mr. Subaru...I had a grin on my face like a Cheshire cat when I read your appraisal. Cheers! from the windswept Hinterlands of Alberta , Canada

Our “local Nissan dealer” (won’t say the name), did something to me kinda like this. I went in for an annual inspection and oil change. Of course they came back with their “if you don’t fix this right now you are going to die” list. Thousands of dollars. I said not today to the kid. Fixed it for like $200. Most of what he said was bravo sierra. That was years ago. The car is still running fine. The scary part is they (many, hopefully not all shops) are doing this to people that don’t know any better. I know they have a shop / dealership to maintain, overhead, staff to pay, etc. There is a difference in thousands of dollars and $200. There is a difference in making a profit to stay in business and BOHICA.

I blew the motor in my 2016 Forester 2.5. Subaru dealership quoted me around 5k for rebuild. Luckiky SOA covered some of it. Fully reman motor at 90k miles for 3200$ at a Subaru Dealership. Sounds like your numbers are spot on. Just this past summer

I think Subaru can be decent. My daughter had a brand new '14 Forester that burned up the transmission when a hose split to the cooler. Took a couple weeks but she got a new transmission. Didn't try to rebuild it.

Work at one of these shops and say something about it. Had a guy tell an old lady he replaces his air filter every oil change. I told her he was lying and there was nothing wrong with her air filter. I was fired a week later. All involved have been to jail more than once I’m sure.

I bet Daves right however and it was a Subaru bought at a used car dealer who got it at auction, who got it from someone who traded it in at 120k and did no maintenance lol Ps: great tip on the short block

Agree, never not heard a noisy subaru. Although not a subaru my moms Fusion started having hard shifts, I told her as long as it keeps going forward and reverse, keep driving it till it fails. Been driving on my ford with the same issue for 116,000 miles. As long as they keep working drive it till it blows up.

Except those actually work, I know a couple of guys running them in their big rigs and they absolutely run quieter and get better fuel mileage. Seriously considering a set when I do the next inframe on my freightliner.

This might be off topic but I’m gonna ask anyway. I got a 2013 Outback with the notorious FB25 that chugs oil. It actually used 1 qt in 600 miles of driving. Ironically it don’t smoke that I can see from it. Would it hurt anything to jump it up from 0/20 to like 5/40? Or would I run into oil pressure issues? Many thanks
@MrSubaru13875 күн бұрын
Nope. Running higher viscosity won’t hurt.
@aaronwoodward83985 күн бұрын
Good to know. I go through about 1.5qts every oil change. I'll try upping the viscosity too.

Make sure you don't have a valve cover leak or oil pan leak. My 2011 started leaking because the pcv seized and increased internal pressure.
@JohnBlankenship-m6w5 күн бұрын
@ it’s seeping a tiny bit around the pan but other than that it’s not really bad. The valve covers aren’t even leaking. I pulled the pcv out and cleaned it with brake clean just incase. I know a stuck or bad pcv can cause oil issues

Your 100% right brother, 15-16G on a car worth 5-6G, that shop is out of their fkn mind. Like you said, change the oil and filter and drive it until it implodes. And don't do business with that shop again.

I'm a die hard Chevy guy so we know about valvetrain noise too. That was a happy ticking little Subaru motor. People think their engine should be dead silent. In the 50s, 60s, and 70s the engineers prioritized quiet engine operation. With the added complications in design aimed at improving power and economy you'll have an engine now that makes foreign noises that are normal but, the manufacturer won't educate the consumer.

I like watching Dave’s but I gotta agree with you here. I own a handful of subies , they are definitely noisey engines. Just like my 12v Cummins. If the noise doesn’t worsen under acceleration I ease my mind on it

I've never even owned a Subaru and I just came across your channel and I am subscribing !. Why, well you struck a chord with me as I have heard a few things floating around on the internet about the shop in question in this video, sometimes questionable work and yes without a doubt some very questionable bills. Oh sure, his videos make him out to be a god ( and yes I gather he is very religious so there is that ... ) but I think the truth is something a little different. Not to say he is stupid ... oh no, more like a sly fox business man who knows how to create some slick advertising and how to bring in the business.

They seem to be more of a diesel truck shop. Those guys are used to paying crazy money to keep a modern diesel on the road. Doesn't make sense for a standard commuter car. If your shop has more work than it can handle you can turn down work. Up to the consumer to make smart educated choices.

There are always shops out there who are either incompetent or are intentionally screwing customers. A regular customer was having stalling issues with her Equinox 2.4l and just swung by a nearby shop to have it checked out. They told her the timing chain was stretched and quoted $5k for an engine. She brought it to me for an estimate on a chain. It had a bad VVT solenoid. Replaced both solenoids and sent her on her way for around $100 and it's still fine over a year later.

Sounds like what happened to some people my wife and I know. Had a very common issue with there Tundra pickup truck. I checked around and it was around $800 - $1000 for the parts they needed. Plus whatever time needed to do the work which was nothing to bad to do. They took it to two different shops each one wanted $10,000 - $11,000 to do the work. When they told me this I was like are you buying 2 brand new engines or something? Places are getting so bad about scamming people who dont know any better out of money. Im just glad Ive learned how to work on my own stuff. Been doing it for 30 years now.

I used to work in a pretty well known performance machine shop. For a number of years we were building the engines for dirt fish rally schools cars. They were paying us pretty close to 5k each to go through their ej25s. Mind you we put Brian crower forged rods, wiseco forged pistons, all new valves, springs, retainers, keepers, and cams in them along with the usual bearings and gaskets associated with a rebuild. Those students knew how to ruin everything. When I stopped working there a few years back they were still bringing us a couple engines a month.
