I remember seeing this at the cinema when I was 11 years old, and loads of Dad's clearly brought their toddlers to the theatre, and some kid just LOST IT when the bug scene started, screaming and crying like crazy. It sent a wave of terror through the cinema to the point where the whole audience was just reeling in disgust and terror, yelling and shouting out screen. Coolest cinema experience of my life still.

Once you've seen the first hour and a half of character development once you don't really need it, and honestly, you can figure out each character's deal just based on what they do on the island even if you've never seen the movie before. One thing I do appreciate in later viewings is the dreamlike presentation of the island - not sure quite how to quantify it, but it feels like a lot of poetic writing, footage filmed at higher speeds and slowed down (even during dialogue), interesting framing and visuals.

I was 20 when this came out in theaters - even went to a late-night early release screening with my brother, whose only memorable remark was "Fifteen brontosaur pile-up!" - and I loved it at first, but couldn't deny that while it's extraordinarily well done, and Naomi Watts became one of my favorite actresses from then on, it was just too long for its own good, and I just can't help but think that this and LOTR: RETURN OF THE KING would contribute gradually to the current state that Peter Jackson's in right now. If you asked me what my favorite PJ movie is, it would be DEAD ALIVE. And if you asked me what my favorite King Kong version is, oddly enough I would say the 1976 version. I know that version got a lot of hate over the years from critics and fans of the 1933 original, and it's true that it fades in comparison with its predecessor in terms of cultural impact and mythic splendor, but that version actually has a lot more going for it than people realize or respect, and I felt connected to it in a number of ways. For one, it feels more timely, talking about greed, exploitation, reckless overseas ventures, and the desperate search for celebrity, which were relevant during the post-Vietnam era and Me Generation and are still relevant now. The ape was treated more sympathetically and in a more believable way, and even the characters played by Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange showed gradual understanding and pity for the creature that surpassed their own romance. The use of real landscapes in Hawaii was authentic, moreso given that I had been in Hawaii in 2002 before PJ's own Kong was released. John Barry's score was an excellent mixture of adventurous, romantic and tragic. King's breaking down of the wall gate was even more intense, realistic and suspenseful. The Kong suit here was taller than the Andy Serkis version and looked more like a real gorilla than the old version's. It was bloodier, sexier and in a number of ways more thought-provoking. And the climax on top of the World Trade Center resonated with me because I visited it with my old man and kid bro in June 1998 (coincidentally after seeing the first awful American Godzilla) before I turned 13, and it seemed more chillingly prophetic with a downed helicopter crashing into one of the Twin Towers before 9-11! I could go on and on about comparisons, but you get the point, I really have a softer spot for the '76 version over the other two, and now that I've contributed my views, I'm already eager to see James and Mason contribute an entire episode to that version alone! In any case, I'm pretty sure all of us are in agreement that it was vastly superior to its 1986 sequel KING KONG LIVES.

Probably one of the better Kajiu flicks in term of genuinely developing its human drama; that Ann and Kong stuff is spectacular and better justifies the NYC bit for me. But I totally agree it’s way too long tho. Also it has the best video game adaption bar none.
