FOMO. It's real and scary. Look at drivers around you when you're at a red light (unless you yourself are one of these) - most people have to check things on their phones. Just yesterday actually saw a couple in their vehicle scrolling their feeds (yes, including the driver) while going down the road. Of course, driver's attention wasn't given to driving and he kept slowing down, speeding up and weaving. It's scary what we've become... Even at dinner time, in restaurants, families, people no longer interact with each other - they have to scroll to see what they may be missing when what they're truly missing is who is in front of them...

After some struggles I was able to delete everything besides KZbin and also don't watch shorts at all anymore. Great video! I have no notifications and my phone is always on silent. I treat it like a hobby: I enjoy it consciously for a while and then I go offline. I only go on Reddit every day and read/comment on topics I’m interested in. I open FB/Twitter/Insta around once a week. I consciously use time to answer messages (during my commute and once in the evening). For the rest I meet people in person or do stuff offline. And I allow myself to spend a day or a weekend here and there to binge a series or KZbin. Yes, I often watch something when I eat (I am solo by choice). But I spend every evening offline for a few hours doing chores (while listening to content), doing a hobby, napping… Being conscious of one’s use and constantly course correct really helps.

Spot on mate, I called this 15 odd years ago! I was speaking with someone on the original dev team for Facebook who confirmed this even back then. The feeds are designed around slot machines, the refresh response times are instant and they implement that spinning wheel as a timer to create suspense to keep you hooked, just like you demonstrated with the monkey. It's no accident but all by design, they are literally made to be addictive like a drug which is why this one individual jumped ship. The level at which tech is used to psychologically manipulate us is actually frightening, just look at things such as Cambridge Analytica for example! I don't often buy into conspiracies but there are definitely incidents where it is being used for nefarious purposes! Some real Black Mirror stuff and yet here we are still scrolling away! 😅 One inconsistency though, as an electronics tech, the board you showed from a 'new' slot machine is actually something very old from around the early 90's! Old Intel i950 processor and erasable EPROM chips! 😁

I really love when you make videos like this that are slightly out of your usual niche of tech reviews. You do them very well and, as usual, keep them very engaging. These kinds of conversations aren't just very important but they also might be what save us from ourselves in the future. I'm looking forward to more content like this. I'd love to see your take on 'brainrot'.

When it comes to the user side, social media mainly serves two purposes: either it’s your job, or you’re trying to make it your job. The other purpose is to show that you have a superior or better life than others, and you want to display it and receive attention for it. Outside of that, it’s completely useless-who needs it apart from those two reasons? I use technology intensively, and I change phones very regularly. I love taking photos and videos, etc., but I don’t have any social media accounts.
@TheLexikitty3 ай бұрын
Genuine question, if you’re creating art through photos and videos how do you share those experiences with others? Asking because I went into music to perform for others, not really with the intention of making it my job (which is why I didn’t do it after college lol) but art is much more valuable (to me) than doing something creative for a job.

A lot of the Advice on stopping this reminds me of a book by James Clear called Atomic Habits. A good read not just to stop your own bad habits but also for ways to actually use this type of psychology on yourself to make positive change in your life.
@rebecca_stone2 ай бұрын
It's good to see a clear explanation of these tactics getting refreshed attention. To add another example of where intermittent reinforcement is used: in domestic violent / severely abusive relationships. This is why the victim stays, even though outsiders think "why would anyone be dumb enough to stay with a DV partner?!". It's because the partner is only sometimes violent or cruel, otherwise they are the most amazing partner you can imagine. It's the good they do that does the most damage and makes it so incredibly hard to leave. Literally addiction. Even years after you leave them, you're haunted by the good parts.
