I think another difficulty that didn't really get touched upon here is differentiating between platonic and romantic feelings. I think sexual attraction is a bit easier to determine because it's often quite physical, but determining if you like a guy in a really close but friendly way, or a "potential partner" way can be hard and add to the confusion.

I thought I was bisexual for a whole year and now I’m fairly sure my “attraction” to men was just a messy combination of daddy issues, the need for male validation, comphet and not being able to differentiate between platonic and romantic attraction…. although I don’t feel like the label lesbian fits me because I’m also attracted to a lot of genderqueer and non binary people… so I’m just gonna say gay?

I think the hardest thing for me about being bi is that people around me don't think you have preferences. I am mainly attracted to women, but I also find nb/genderqueer people super attractive. I rarely notice cis men. People are like "what about him? I thought you were bi". It can be frustrating. Sometimes I want to say I'm gay just to stop the pressure from others to notice men. But then it feels like I'm using a word that isn't mine. ~Thank you, Dutchy. I really appreciate your openess and creating a safe space for us.

I have never been friends with a guy in all my 18 years without having a "crush" on them, or so I thought. I never knew the difference between a platonic and romantic relationship. A year ago I thought I was bisexual because I found men attractive, but I'm not actually attracted to them. I've found that I "liked" men because I needed validation and I knew it would disappoint my Christian family if I only liked girls. With guys, I have only ever found some of them physically attractive. But with women, I am emotionally, mentally, and physically attracted to them. I used to have really intense crushes on guys in both primary and high school. I would obsess over them and tell my friends how much I liked them…. Nothing ever happened with them because I would never allow it. Never. Whenever a guy had a crush on me or just got too friendly I would be super uncomfortable and panic. I find guys attractive on surface level, but I don’t want anything more. I feel so much better knowing that about myself now. I was so confused for so long. I feel the exact same way! A coworker asked me if I was bi or gay and I told him I’m not 100% sure but I think I’m gay. I used to think I was bi (sometimes still do) but the thought of having s3x with a man doesn’t appeal to me at all. I've been questioning again lately after some changes to my life. When I was a teenager I considered myself a lesbian, then my parents put me through conversion therapy with a local church and afterwards I considered myself bisexual but I was never with another woman. It's been 12 years and now I'm questioning if I'm just experiencing compulsory heterosexuality. Its extremely rare for me to ever find a guy attractive and the guys I have dated or talked to in the past was only after they showed interest in me. I'm bisexual and I do have a little caveat in the part where you talk about who we find hot superficially but is not for us. This can happen in all sexualities (yes, even str8) The trick in my opinion is to know if you're a person who's more attracted to a personality than a look and then discern if you actually have a sexual attraction for that person. If everything checks, then what's the pattern? Mixed? Heavily one sided? Also my advice is not to fall in the trap of thinking you're not "insert sexuality" enough. If that's the only reason you struggle with finding your label, toss that thought right away, you are enough.

I feel like when we come out as bisexual, people put these standards and expectations and they want you to date both sexes like right there at the moment and if you date the opposite sex they're there waiting to judge you and say stuff like "So you're just straight" and Vice versa. That's why as a bisexual sometimes I just say I'm queer so people don't try to put me into a box full of their expectations and else.

The main thing that hit me on the head was the fact that a lesbian can be attracted to a man, but not actually want to be with him. I’ve felt a small attraction to a man, but I didn’t think that meant I was bi, because I didn’t feel bi. I felt gay, but tolerating myself being the smallest bit attracted to a man. A few months ago my friend thought I was thinking about cheating on my boyfriend at the time because the friend thought I was flirting with this girl who’s a cheerleader at my previous school, and I laughed it off because I didn’t notice myself doing it and because I thought I was straight. Fast forward to now, I’ve been broken up with that guy for a while and now have huge crush on that girl even though I’m like 99% sure she’s straight, which I’m fine with since I’m still a teenager and my parents are super homophobic and I don’t think I’m going to tell them I’m into girls. Initially when I realized that I am, I thought I was bi but I’ve been feeling increasingly attracted to women recently and was thinking that maybe I am actually a lesbian and just being affected by compulsory heterosexuality stuff (which I didn’t know there was a word for until this video so thank you for that). But thanks for making this video because it definitely reaffirmed to me that I’m bi without making me feel like I’m trying to convince myself that I’m “at least part straight” (as I have actually heard someone say before about another person). When you said that some people settle in relationships because of heteronormativity, I felt that sooo deeply!! In every romantic encounter I’ve had with men, I’ve always felt like I should’ve had stronger feelings for them but I just…didn’t? Like when all my ex boyfriends told me they loved me, I just knew internally I didn’t feel the same and was doing girlfriend-y things because I felt I had to and it all felt like an act. It never felt genuine and it just felt like something I HAD to do because I found men attractive and wanted to be with them s3xually but romantically, I just felt very…meh. A good example of just wanting male validation is; when guys wanted to sleep with me besides just giving me affirmation, I felt grossed out like they didn't deserve it. Especially if they had slept with other women beforehand. So I didn't sleep with them. With women, it doesn't matter how many people they slept with; they are still just as attractive. And it doesn't feel gross or like they "don't deserve it." Like I had lots of male crushes growing up, but when it actually came to dating them or whatever, I always felt like their lifestyles didn't match mine well enough, and like I was creating a fictional life with them. I would never date the male actors I had crushes on, just because it ended at physical appearance. Who they actually were as people made me turned-off. I'm also no means asexual, so for those wondering that it isn't the case. Another example is the guys I had crushes on growing up, I only liked if they didn't like me back. As soon as they started showing interest I no longer had the "thrill of the chase." With women who have been interested in me, I feel like a celebrity and it makes me like them more even if I wasn't initially that into them.

I figured out I was lesbian as soon as I realized I preferred female bodies over men . Trying to be PG rated here , basically that's what lead to it . And also I always wanted a girlfriend when I was with my ex fiancé , but didn't want to be polyamorous. I didn't wish to share a girlfriend of mine with my ex fiancé . I also thought fondly of my ex male fiancé but only because he treated me so nicely . He treated me like a human being , a woman of class . And that really helped me to finally realize I wanted to be with a woman . As confusing as it sounds , that's how I felt . I also had dreams about women and sleeping with women . Very frequently . I've had 3 girl crushes in the last two years . And only one boyfriend for two years . I'm now his ex girlfriend but I feel it's for the best because now he can find someone who can be his caregiver ( he's disabled ) and live with him , And who can love him for him . i feel like i’m the opposite of most people in that i thought myself a lesbian for a very long time, only to learn later in life that i might actually be bisexual. my advice would be to think about things you’ve experienced in your life since coming out as one or the other. i thought being a lesbian would solve my problems with attraction and i would immediately find a woman that matched with me. the reality was that i am just as picky with women as i was with men. it’s also just as hard for me to find women attractive as men, i only like very specific people and am sexually attracted to specific people. that made me realize i am bisexual leaning, but prefer women because of the patriarchal society we live in.

Hey! recently i've been struggling to figure out my sexuality. Most of my life i've been 100% sure i was straight but more recently i've been finding myself thinking about my sexuality. I'm remembering that the majority of male crushes I've had were either The Hot Guy in School™️ or guy friends of mine who I mostly just arbitrarily chose to like, and the latter usually came down to how nice they were to me and/or if we had enough in common that I could justify the idea of liking them in my head. My first girl crush was someone I thought I just really looked up to because she was picked to do a lot of singing related stuff at the school and I wanted to be a singer, but looking back, she was really pretty and kinda on the busty side, which probably played into it more than I believed at the time. (This was in, like, 7th grade.) At this point, I think either Biromantic Lesbian or Panromantic Lesbian is the most right to me, at least for now. I don't think I'm physically attracted to guys in the sense of wanting to get physical with them, but I think I can romantically be into just about anybody that I really click with. I just lean towards people who are AFAB and/or feminine presenting.

And do you have to see yourself dating and marrying both or more genders? I thought I was bisexual when I was little but I didn't think much of it because I always had a crush on some boy from a tv show. I even had crushes on gay men. I started wondering when I was in high school if I'm gay. I had a boyfriend for a week then I broke up with him. I had a boyfriend two years ago he broke my heart but I had to break up with him. I thought what I was feeling was real but I don't know if it was. I feel like I pretended to like someone because he liked me first. I am 24 almost 25 still don't know what I am but I feel like queer fits me the best.

Same here! I completely understand where you are coming from and I do get in my head a lot about labels (especially the lesbian/biromantic terms). However, at the end of the day I have the mindset of if I am in a romantic/sexual situation, I ask myself two questions. Firstly, do we have a natural dynamic (i.e. are we forcing our feelings for eachother or anything similar)? Secondly, am I comfortable in this situation (i.e. have we successfully communicated our intentions well, asked for consent...etc)? If the answer for these two questions are yes, then it provides myself some 'peace of mind' and comfort in my decisions/attractions.

Ultimately, a romantic/sexual situation will not be pleasant if there is not an enthusiastic yes to either of those questions so it does help with navigation. No worries at all and happy to help!

I was okay with being single for 30 years until my family insisted me to get married, that was the time when I realized that I can't think about living with the opposite sex and l don't like being around them. Like, idk if i'm not attract to men, or i just have too high standard. The standard from men, compare to women, is so different. I'd date them ONLY if they fit very certain type in my head, and i don't think i can actually find a man like that ever. Imo, i'd not date them only if i think they are attractive. But with women it's like, if they ask me out and they are attractive, i'm going for it.(unless they have very bad reputation, or they're psychopath or smth like that obviously) So is this normal bi thing?? What about when I lived in religious society and being gay was a sin. I've always liked women, but could never really expierience dating them and only dated guys. I thought I was asexual and bisexual for about 2 years. About 1-2 months ago I was like I feel like I'm gonna throw up thinking about a relationship with a man. I always felt nauseous thinking about more than friendship with a (straight) guy. I still don't understand the difference between romantic feelings and just friendship with a guy, because I feel like I really like a few guys a lot (with that I mean, when I like their personality a lot. And when I think they are a good person, then it's a green light for me.) For me that was the same as a 'crush'. With women, it's just different, I would love to do all that lol (I mean I don't of it as one or the other, it's like yes to all lol). It's just confusing when you have comphet, and also a parent who was/is a hidden gay guy. What is confusing to me is that I do see that men are attractive. I just don't 'feel' it like other girls do. I can only understand and empathize with them. But then i'm only looking at the girls lol 😇😅

Can we talk about age? I am pretty young right now, and have come into terms with myself as lesbian, for now, but I don't want to close myself eathier 'cause most people say guys start being cute when they are older, and girls start having attraction towards them as older too. I grew up straight and only labeled myself Bisexual around 2008 and started exploring my sexualality. I came to accept the fact I'm attractive to both men and women . But just recently for the past few years I been as you saying fantasizing over women. This weekend was mine and my boyfriend 1 year anniversary and I am still beating myself up because for the first time since I came to accept I am attractive to both genders I felt grossed out when he kissed me in the lips. I didn't tell him this I just told him I wasn't feeling good but he's so sensitive I feel like I hurt him because I wouldn't make out with him I can only tolerate quick peck kisses. I never had crushes or feelings towards guys growing up, I didn't even had male friends and with the ones from my school I wasn't really getting along so it was always clear to me that I am a lesbian once I started having crushes on girls and then getting my first girlfriend, intimacy etc..
