MSFS 2020 | Spitfire Mk9C - by Flying Iron Simulations - Review and Tutorial [and Aerobatics!]

Today I jump into the glorious Spitfire Mk9C by Flying Iron Simulations. I'll guide you through the start up procedures, showing you where everything is in the cockpit before taking her up out of RAF Valley for some Aerobatics!
We'll snap to the White Cliffs of Dover for a fly past before returning to RAF Valley to tackle to landing. It's a handful on the runway and takeoff and landing took about 3 attempts to film each so let me know how you get on with it!

I took my first trip with this across Pearl Harbor (yeah metaphor mixing). The sound on my Dolby atmos rig was amazing when you are at full throttle. Such a gorgeous elegant plane. I hope they make a mosquito (my favorite wwii plane), because a low level flight across France or up to the dam in Norway would be amazing to fly that historic mission

Glad to see i'm not the only one struggling with take-off. The suggested boost on takeoff is +8, but this is near impossible, even with smooth throttle control. I find it needs to be half this, like your video, otherwise you are fighting too much and she rolls or veers. Joy to fly once in the air though.

Yeah a max of half currently with the flightmodel keeps it controllable!

This aircraft for msfs is a must have for all lovers of aviation and ww2 history. I obviously haven’t flown the real thing but I’ve seen it in action close up several times at air shows. I own a few earlier virtual spits like the A2A and DCS ones and one thing I think this developer needs to address in comparison is the engine sound. I don’t think they have got that quite right here to be honest. Especially between idling and taxiing power there’s a strange gap imo. Otherwise I think they have done a decent job on the detailing but not perfect. The flight model here is easier too handle than on both the DCS spit and the A2A as well as a somewhat easier engine/power management. I feel it’s way harder to overheat this one than the DCS spit. I really hope the developers will give us updates to make this even better in the future.

Tailwheel looks like it's steerable (not correct from what I recall, but easier to ground handle) in MSFS - is that the case? Otherwise looks great!

Correct - it's a limitation in the SDK currently apparently so they have it on a list for a future update when it becomes possible

Great video. I'm on XBOX...If you nose over and the propeller gets damaged, is there any way to reset it without coming out of the game/restarting? And yes, I've nosed over on several occasions. Cheers, J😃

I love this aircraft ...the 2 Aussie Brothers that did this are to be commended....it's hard to fly, like the real one, but once you master it.... it is a joy to fly....realism....isn't that what we want? Our Grandfathers (well mine anyway...I'm an old fuck) flew these things and dog fought in them....and we find it hard to get this aircraft off the ground, let alone land the bastard. Well done Flying Iron Sim. P.S.....there is a few Inop buttons that do nothing..... depends on how far you want to take this I suppose. Well done guys, brilliant job.....thanx, this is my favorite aircraft in MSFS 2020.

Great video, Good job! Although it became apparent that FlyingIron chose not to model realistic engine dynamics allowing you to fly "inverted" for the length of time you did during your aerobatic display. According to documentation and pilot reports, the Spitfire (unlike the BF109 and FW190 which were fuel injected) can only go inverted MOMENTARILY during maneuvers due to fuel starvation when gravity stops fuel from being properly introduced into the carbs.

Fantastic knowledge! For me the sounds need tweaking too as in drone cams it lacked the unmistakable roar of the Merlin engine!

The Merlin 66 fitted to the Mk IX Spitfire had the Bendix-Stromberg pressure carburettor which did provide fuel flow during inverted flight avoiding the problems for the earlier carburettor systems.

@@BritishAvgeek Yes. Not sure if could cope with extended inverted flight as fuel injection could but I believe the FlyingIron model is broadly very good. It does seem to leap into the air nose up more than I would expect and speed is slow to bleed off on landing but it is great fun to fly. Easy to fly but hard to fly well. In my earlier comment I omitted to thank you for an excellent review.

nice, like the cockpit, seem that the bird is a bit to sensitive it is brutal when you pull on the stick and roll there should be a bit more "momentum" in the motion feels like a 152 whit 1000hp lol.

HELP! I really need help when on the ground on take-off roll the aircraft veers to the left by about 45 degrees no matter my rudder input.

It's torque steer - try to takeoff with only 40% or 50% throttle then when you start to lift off the ground, apply lots more power to like 90% and see if that helps

Maybe I need more practice but can’t stop this aircraft from dropping a wing on landing and spiralling out of control particular with a cross wind over 10kts - any tips?

It's pretty difficult to do takeoff and land with to be honest! Flare for as long as you can until you touchdown and then as the tail wheel touches the ground, brake gently and pull back on the stick to put more weight on the wheels. She's a handful!

@@BritishAvgeek I have exactly the same spec PC mate with an Oculus Quest 2. With latest beta drivers and a little tweaking FS2020 is beautiful in VR! I'm seriously thinking of getting the Spitfire just for VR flying. At least I'll be able to lean out the side when on the taxi and runways!! :D

I'm having an issue with keeping the temperature down during flight, which leads to the engine revving high then low, over and over again. It causes me to slowly lose altitude, and the only way I've found to deal with it is to cut the fuel off and allow the temp to fall. I'm not sure how to keep this from happening, and how to properly respond when it does. From reading the manual, I believe it happens when the engine boost is too high, but it happens even when I keep boost around 4. Anyone else having this issue?

@@BritishAvgeek I figured it out. It’s the propeller RPM control. If it’s left at 100%, it causes the radiator to get too hot. I set the propeller around 65% and that seemed to solve the issue.

Sure is!! Use less throttle (so maybe half) until your wheels are coming off the ground then increase the power for climb - I've found that helps a lot... ... Then you just have to land 🤣🤣 took a few attempts myself

Set ruddertrim 4-5 degrees to starboard for takeoff to counter torque steering. That helps me a lot.

@@OffGridMadMan yep that's the Breko3d... They take a model, and put various default aircraft systems into it and don't really care much if it stops working. Personally I'd avoid the marketplace, there is very little quality control and some really tragic add-ons that shouldn't even be freeware in it

I'm going to react to that. I got a setup with something similar to what some company is selling under the name "buttkicker", basically it's low frequencies transducers connected to an audio output (all DIY by me). The rumble of the Merlin is incredible to feel inside the cockpit. Got a VR headset too. If you want to increase greatly the awesomeness of flying this legend, that's the next thing after VR.

Anytime I hit 14,000 feet the engine over revs and essentially stops functioning. Am I the only one with this problem? I can't find any information on it lol

There is a lever at the bottom of the panel at the right side. At 12000 feet, when the fuel pressure light comes on, flick it over. It should work.

@@robb1ie biggest thing with trim is only using it to set specific pitch/speed. If you turn, or change power, or change the pitch, the trim is useless and will need re-trimming

Yeah it's particularly difficult isn't it! I had to tap my brakes on and off constantly and when slow enough, pull the stick fully back to keep a bit of control but still went all over the runway! 😂

The crosswind effect is too strong in MSFS, according to RL pilots. Make sure to land into the wind, or turn ground wind layer off. Hope Asobo will fix this!
