Very concise overview. Nice work! I picked up this board and I am very pleased. Running a Ryzen 7 5800x, RTX 3070, 4 x 8GB sticks of G.Skill PC3600 at CL16 RAM, a Samsung 980 Pro 1TB in the Gen4 M.2 slot and a Corsair MP400 1TB in the Gen3 M.2 slot. It's very stable and the performance is unbelievably fast compared to the i7-7700K, GTX 1060 6GB build I upgraded from. I'm sure this board would handle a Ryzen 9 5950x and RTX 3090 easily. The B550-A Pro is a steal at $139.99 and the money saved can go towards a better CPU, GPU and fast storage for a PC build.

Killer feature set on this board for just over $100. I got 2 good years out of my B450 Tomahawk, but have long wanted a new case and this board offers front USB-C. Flashback saw quite a bit of use around here when Ryzen 3000 series first came out. I needed 2x PCIe 3.0 x1 along with the usage of both M.2s. This fits the bill and just disables the one longer PCIe. Should work perfect! Dug through dozens of boards before I found one that fit perfectly without all of the extra features. Saved me about $75. Thank you! You won't find front USB-C, 2x M.2, heatsinks, no WiFi, no RGB, and still good enough VRMs to run the 5000 series CPUs in one package elsewhere. Buy this board! X570 you're just getting the ability for a second M.2 @ PCIe 4.0 speeds so unless you're running a couple of 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMEs in RAID I don't see the need of spending another $100-$200 on a motherboard this generation. Only knock is no 2.5GbE, but to be expected at price point I guess!

What's your take on the pros and cons of this and the Tomahawk B550. For some reason its really tough to find straight up comparisons between these two?
@MiddleofKnowhere3 жыл бұрын
Here are the main differences I noticed when comparing the two, and mind you this just going off the website to compare them, not from usage as I have not bought the B550 Tomahawk. The Tomahawk has 2 LAN ports, one 2.5Gb and a 1Gb port. Both motherboards use the same 1Gb LAN chip, the Realtek RTL8111H. If having the 2.5Gb port is important to you, take that into consideration. For Audio, the Tomahawk has an Optical S/PDIF header on the back and also uses a different Realtek audio codec than the Pro: ALC1200/ALC1220P (On Tomahawk) versus ALC892/ALC897. I'm not sure how much of a difference that makes but the Tomahawk codec may have some additional software features the A Pro doesn't have, so research into that if it's important to you. The A Pro has 4 USB 2.0 ports on the rear compared to 2 on the Tomahawk. They both have the same number of USB 3.2 (gen 1 and gen 2 ports and Type-C) on the back. Aesthetically, the Tomahawk has a fixed rear I/O shield, which is always nice, and more LED lighting integrated onto the motherboard itself. I'm not talking RGB/ARGB headers, but actual lighting. The Tomahawk also supports more RAM speeds, but since both support 3600MHz RAM and that is the sweet spot, I don't see this being a big difference. Finally Price: B550-A Pro is $139.99 and the Tomahawk is $179.99, although I saw it for $149.99 during the holidays so price may vary. That's about all the differences I could fine, everything else is the same including the beefy power delivery heatsink. The actual Power Delivery pieces used may also differ, but I think they actually are the same. Hope this helps, thanks for watching and commenting. Please like, share, and subscribe. :)

AM5 is too damn expensive from where I am, the cost of an AM5 A620 and a 7600 is equal to the amount I bought for the AM4 board, 5700x, 8GB x 4 DDR4 RAM. Plus, 8GB x 2 DDR5 RAM is much more expensive than 8GB x 4 sticks of DDR4 3600MHZ. Thank you for the information!

Looks likey changed it a little from having a couple of PCIE X16 ports and one PCIE X1 port to having four or five PCIE X16 ports which is not a bad thing since most PCIE X1 cards work in PCIE X16 slots. Also, it now has built-in WIFI and Bluetooth and I'm hoping I can make it work with Linux. Going to get this board next month. It has the SATA ports for all my storage devices, WIFI, and heatsinks and enough fan headers. It's exactly what I need if it works but it looks like online that people have been having issues with these boards more often than the boards we had in the 90's.

@MiddleofKnowhere2 жыл бұрын
Hi, this motherboard does not have WIFI included and I didn't see a WIFI version. Having said that you could easily get a WIFI USB dongle or a PCIe card, both of which are inexpensive. If you have to have a WIFI connection but like this motherboard, then I suggest that route. Here's the WIFI USB dongle I use, but a PCIe card might be faster: amzn.to/3P7mP1Q Here are some WIFI Cards to look at that are well reviewed: amzn.to/3ym5aMZ The good thing about wifi pci-e cards is they also tend to have Bluetooth as well if you need that, and the USB dongle won't. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

The MB looks good for the the price but I have one question. If you require Wi-Fi (LAN is not a option) would you opt for a different board or just use a PCI slot or other for a Wi-Fi adapter?
@MiddleofKnowhere3 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for watching! This is a great question. My answer would be this: Look to see how much the Wi-fi version of the board costs, if there is one, and then look to see how much a pci-e wifi card costs. compare those price differences and you'll have your answer. For instance, here's a Gigabyte ATX b550 motherboard with wifi for only 30 bucks more. It's pretty nice looking too. amzn.to/3h8gRxC Here then is a link to a bunch of pci wifi cards: amzn.to/3aveKTm They all seem to be around 30 bucks or more, so I'd suggest the GIgabyte board as it has wifi in it and for the equivalent price of an add-in card!

@MiddleofKnowhere3 жыл бұрын
The b550-a pro is pretty good and will serve you well but if you need to go cheaper consider the AsRock b550 phantom gaming. A B450 motherboard will also save you money. For your OS drive consider a WD blue sn550 512GB amd then a 2TB seagate barracuda platter drive for mass storage. You can get the cougar mx330 case for about 40 bucks or less I think. Or go for a montech case at $56 and it has 4 fans. Get 16GB of ddr4 3200 or 3600 ram as budget allows and try to aim for CL16. Your GPU will determine your PSU but aim for 80+ bronze at a minimum and consider semi-modular of you can. 550-750 watts should do you depending on your gpu. You’ll also probably want an aftermarket cpu cooler at some point. And the Vetroo V5 should serve in a pinch. As for gpu ... pray you can find one at msrp and shop according to your budget.

BE WARNED: If you’re completely new with pc’s this motherboard could likely be a living hell or just fine. If you’re new to pc building, honest heartily if you just want to build something that’s plug and play, go with intel. Even I with some experience with pc’s have had trouble as this is my 5th pc build and first AMD processor. Bios flash usually works if done correctly - and if done correctly then you should be able to post BUT you could go into some trouble with black screen for couple secs while in windows or even bios or ram dual channel mode. Don’t forget you can’t fix EVERYTHING so find a different bios version; flash, and see if it works

Hey its me again, I wanted to ask you another question about this MBD. I ended up purchasing it and building out of it. I am having a few issues. One is being sent a bad RAM stick but I think I safely diagnosed the problem. The second, is related to the MBD itself. I went with one m.2 ssd for my build for starters. I installed it into the first M.2. slot but the bios does not recognize it? I can see in some deeper menus in the bios that it sees the name and brand of the ssd but its not "active". Am I limited to the second slot? Or is there something I am missing with MBD and bios?
@MiddleofKnowhere3 жыл бұрын
You're not limited to the 2nd slot at all. If you haven't installed windows yet, do that 1st. this will give you the chance to format that SSD and create a volume. this way the BIOS will recognize it. That's my first inclination to say. Normally the only thing I do first in the BIOS is set XMP for the RAM but won't touch it again until after windows has been installed. The top slot on this mobo is also PCI-e 4.0 and the bottom is 3.0, so keep that in mind too. IT shouldn't affect using a 3.0 drive in that slot but I cannot be 100% sure on that statement.
@blakestrother51223 жыл бұрын
@@MiddleofKnowhere Thanks yeah I think I figured it out. I dropped my SSD to the second M.2 slot and that at least helped me get my Windows set up. After that, I did a bios update. Hi there! I know this is an older video but I was wondering, I'm planning on getting a Ryzen 5 5600x, will I need a BIOS Update with this CPU?
@MiddleofKnowhere3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Great question. If you just got this board, chances are you may not need to. I recently got a B550-F Gaming from ASUS and it's Ryzen 5000 ready. Look for a sticker on the box. If you don't see one, odds are then you'll need a BIOS update before you can use the 5600x. There is a BIOS flash button on the back of the motherboard, so that's good. You can flash the BIOS via USB drive.

It’s good board for that cpu but there might be some better ones. Depending on your budget you might want to check out the ASUS dark hero as well. I’ve done a video on that and if you can find it in the 250-300 range thats a good deal for it.

@MiddleofKnowhere3 жыл бұрын
Yes a 3060 TI would pair well with this mobo. I'd say this is a better motherboard than the b450 for the fact you get PCI 4.0 for storage and the GPU. You also get some good features, but if you don't care about PCI 4.0 then def compare the two boards as you can save around 25 bucks on the b450 tomahawk max if it's going for it's normal 114 price point. Can you answer a question for me? I have this MB and it was running fine but I had one Ram stick fail. The PC powers up on the one stick but won't give me visual. Should I get visual with the one stick or does this MB require two sticks?
@MiddleofKnowhere2 жыл бұрын
Hi, the motherboard doesn't require two sticks of ram, but you'll want to use two sticks to get dual-channel mode which will increase performance. Try to determine whether or not the slot is bad versus the stick. You may need to RMA the motherboard if the slot is bad.

I recently bought the b550 phantom gaming 4. I am thinking about returning it, and getting this one. Im returning that one mainly because I cant be so sure, with all the negative reviews I’ve been reading. It seems that this one definitely gets more positive reviews, and good feedback. My question to you is, if I get this mobo, will my ram be ok? Will it have any issues that I should be aware of? Is it worth the price? Finally, should I get it? Is this something that I should truly be worried about? Will it very negatively affect performance? How badly?

Hi, I really enjoyed building with this motherboard. I didn't have any problems. the BIOS is a little difficult to navigate compared to other motherboards I've worked in recently, but setting the XMP profile for the RAM was easy enough. I had 0 issues. It's a good motherboard, with loads of features and for 25-30 bucks more than the phantom gaming, I think you'd be set. I actually just got the Phantom WiFi for my next build that's going to be more budget oriented, provided I can get a cheaper than a 3070 gpu for it. I plan on doing a video for that as well. I haven't researched much or heard much about it not being good other than being more bare-boned.

hi, thanks this was helpful what is the max Power supply watt for msi b550-a pro(cec) is recommended?
@MiddleofKnowhere8 ай бұрын
PSU wattage will all depend on what components you'll be using such as CPU, GPU, number of storage devices, number of fans, if the fans will have ARGB, etc. Basically anything that requires power. For the most part you can probably get a way with a 750-850W PSU and I always recommend 80+ Gold or better, but if on a budget Bronze is okay. Again though the wattage is dependent on your components that will be connected to the motherboard.

@MiddleofKnowhere3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for watching and great question. This was a great purchase to be able to upgrade from your 3600 to the Ryzen 5000 series at some point should you choose. Having said that, it looks like Zen 4, whenever that's released, will be on a new socket--no longer the AM4, which we've had since Ryzen launched. Long answer, short: no this motherboard won't work on the next release of Zen CPUs. Don't be down though as you still have an upgrade path to Zen 3, Ryzen 5000 CPUs on this motherboard and also you didn't spend too much money on it, like over 400 bucks, so have that peace of mind too. :)

I have had this board for almost a year now using 2 of the SATA 6Gb ports. I am planning on filling the M.2 slots, knowing that disables the second x16 PCIe slot but I wonder if it’s possible to fill both the M.2 slots and all the SATA ports. Not that I need it, just out of curiousity. It doesn’t say it in the specs which probably means it’s fine but 🤷♂️
@MiddleofKnowhere2 жыл бұрын
I don't think the SATA ports disable only that PCI slot. ANother board review I'm working on from AsRock does have 2 SATA ports disable, but you get all the PCIe slots and there are 4 SATA ports remaining. Depending on circumstances, losing 2 sata ports might be a bigger loss than a pcie slot, or vice versa. If you need it all, then I think X570 is the chipset to go with and prices on those boards should be coming down by now.

@MiddleofKnowhere Жыл бұрын
Hi, If you get 2x8 of the same kit you already have, you'll be able to add it to the existing kit. Just make sure they are the exact same model. Prices as they are, you could also get a 2x16 kit and keep only two slots populated, then sell the 2x8 kit you have to recoup the cost. I only suggest this b/c Ryzen memory controllers don't always like 4 sticks populated. Ultimately it's up to you and I have 4 sticks populated no problem. Hope that helps.

What I want to know is what is the main differences between the MSI B550-A PRO ATX and the MSI B550M PRO-VDH? I'm getting a custom built PC and don't need anything state of the art; just need something that works. Is there anything I would be missing out on by not getting the ATX as opposed to the VDH? The third option is the MSI Tomahawk B550 ATX but I just don't think I need that as it's overkill for my needs...unless it has a really cool feature that's absolutely worth the £50 extra up from the board I'm looking at (the B550M PRO-VDH). The VDH is £25 extra to the build, the ATX £50 and the Tomahawk £75. Any thoughts?
@MiddleofKnowhere2 жыл бұрын
Oddly enough I just bought the B550M Pro-VDH Wi-Fi for a budget build and it should be delivered this week. Besides size, the VDH will have a lower power delivery at I believe 7 phases vs the 12 for the A-Pro. If you're not overclocking or using anything super demanding like a 5900x or 5950x then the 7 phases should be enough. Secondly the VDH only has 1 power delivery heatsink, but probably b/c of the fewer phases. As it's a smaller board there are fewer PCIe slots, but the rear I/O for both is comparable and of course the VDH has wifi built in (unless you're looking at a non-wifi version). Both have a USB type-c internal header for a case using t hat, and both have several RGB/ARGB headers too, always nice. They're actually quite comparable. I think the A-Pro wins out in the power delivery, heatsinks, and rear-io in terms of more USB ports and rear audio ports for more options. If you're not doing much than plugging in headphones and a pair of powered speakers though, you'll be fine. If you need a boat load of USB ports, you'll want to keep looking. Sounds like the VDH will serve you well though so you may as well save some money. Hope that helps!
