@@param1209 I got the same board with a 3600X. The biggest thing that I can tell all B350 boards are missing is Precision Boost Overdrive. I get to about 4.2 GHz with auto boost, but with PBO, it would get that last few hundred Hertz to get to the 4.4Ghz it's advertised as.

i have an ASUS B350 I miniATX Mainboard with a 3700x (upgraded from 2700x) I have the Option to enable or disable PBO in the Bios, and another Option called CBS (core boost from Asus) With both enabled the 3700x boosts to 4.3 on the Desktop and on ALL CORES when i am gaming. ofc i updated to the latest Bios which has the newest ASGEA or whatever they call those Profiles, so maybe thats something you would need to do to to squeeze the last 100 or 200 Ghz. Funny Thing though, when i set the PBO Option in the Bios to AUTO, it only boosts up to 3.95GHZ max. But when i set the option to ENABLE in the Bios i get the sweet 4.3GHZ.

I recently build myself a new PC. First my plan was to get a B450 Tomahawk MAX but they were out of stock everywhere in my country. By the time they got back in stock, it was like 1 week before B550 arrived, so I canceled my order on the B450 and got myself a B550 Tomahawk. I was a bit sad because I had to pay like 60$ more, but based on your early videos and tests on the B550 motherboards, it was worth it. And now that I have been using it for a while, can confirm that. Using it with Ryzen 7 3700X and RX 5700 XT Sapphire Nitro + and got no complains so far. Thank you for all of the useful information that you guys provide us with. Keep it up!

@Larvi4ka
@Larvi4ka 4 жыл бұрын
@@sickset The B550 is worth the money. It has 2x NVMe slots, one of them is Gen4, so you can use the Gen 3 for now and in the future, you can add a Gen 4 or Gen 3 in the other slot. Both slots have a heat shield which is always nice thing to have. For now, it might be a bit of an overkill yes, but you will have the option to upgrade. And for these CPU/GPU, you can rock with a 600-650W PSU, but again getting 700 or over will be future proof. A good PSU will last you a long-long time, so you can just keep it in the future if you are upgrading. Good luck with the build!

Thought I'd throw out a current comment. I have a B550-A Pro, AMD 5800X3D, RTX 3090 Ti, and 64GB HP V10 RAM (XMP-2 = 3600MHz/CAS14) and two M.2 drives (one PCI 3.0, one PCI 4.0.) Very stable running MSFS and any benchmarks I've run. VRM temps as reported by the motherboard are quite good. I did need to buy a PCI-e WiFi-6 adapter, so that added about $30.00 to the cost. I'm really happy with this motherboard - especially for the $99.00 on sale price after rebate.

Not to mention if one bought a 4 port 3.0 USB hub you could split that for USB 2.0 ports if needed but I don't own anything that slow nor want to wait an hour or 2 transfering data when my time is valuable. Not often do I need to swap a external HD from the rear but all 7 rear slots are occupied and the front gen 2 ports with the Gen 2 USB-C port comes in handy although not often do I use the USB-C port due to hardware limitations when it comes to data backups and data migration

what are you not sold on with the mortar? it has almost the exact same features as a b550 tomahawk, with a 8+2+1 instead of 10+2+1, less fan headers and no rgb (if you even care about that). the price is pretty close to the tomahawk though so it does put it in an awkward spot. b450 mortars seem to be hard to get at MSRP though.

@walentaz that's due to 4.0 SSDs using an overturned 3.0 controller. True 4.0 SSDs aren't out there yet. Also, for mainstream users there currently isn't a use case, but with how things are going new games will probably be taking advantage of SSDs proper, and I 100% expect NVMEs finally being able to shine. But, a normal user won't buy an x570 typically. If you're using 2 4.0 NVMEs you obviously have a reason for it.

The A-pro's really tempting, but there's about £5 difference between that and the X570 A-Pro here in the UK at the moment. Might just go for the extra pci-e lanes as I feel NvME drives are going to really mature and drop in price over the next few years.

Thank for this generational comparison! Please note one tiny thing starting at 02:18. Yes, MOSFET can be abbreviated as ‘FET and it is commonplace. However, since you were stating model numbers with an ‘n’ as the last character prior to saying “FET,” it sounded like you were saying N-FET, or N-channel MOSFET. The next product number I expected to hear P-FET for P-channel MOSFET. Small tid bit from a nerd ;)

I think you should get B550 for 3900/3950. For any other option you'll be totally fine with B450 or even B350. Does this limit you in terms of upgrade? Yes, but in 2021 DDR5 will be released and in the modern PCs RAM is a huge bottleneck, especially for AMD. So, the next upgrade seems to be very limited by DDR4 making MoBo replacement a necessity. Great content BTW! No one does the job better than you!

Doubling a phase is the same as running 2 “phases” in parallel. Since they output current at the same time and not “out of phase,” they can’t be counted as a separate phase. They may appear as such, but by definition of the word phase, they are the same. Thus, the B550-A Pro is a 5-phase VRM.
@tomstech4390
@tomstech4390 4 жыл бұрын
Or if you knew what you was talking about you would know that they *do not* output at the same time. Lets say you have a 2 phase VRM controller and it outputs...1, 2, 1, 2 etc..going to power stages A, B, C, D, E... If it was just a 2 phase it would go A_B_A_B_A_B... Or if you put 2 power stages in parallel it would go AB_CD_AB_CD_AB_CD. Instead each signal goes to a pair of ir3598 doublers which then goes to 4 phases A, B, C, D But running as a 2 phase with doublers it goes A_C_B_D......A_C_B_D.....A_C_B_D as the power stages are interleaved. Because they're interleaved A might still be on when C switches on and C might be just about to turn off when it goes to B. So yes they are out of phase with each other thats why they are called phases.
@Michael-OBrien
@Michael-OBrien 4 жыл бұрын
Toms Tech, okay, so they are interleaved. That still means only half of them are on at a given cycle and the doublers switches between them. Still, that’s half.
@tomstech4390
@tomstech4390 4 жыл бұрын
@@Michael-OBrien That means that for a given switching frequency each mosfets duty cycle is halved allowing for time to cool down and be more efficient leading to lower temps and a longer time. OR switching frequency can be increased (controllers increasing from 400mhz>800mhz isnt a problem when they top out ~2000mhz) which means you get better transient response and lower voltage ripple on the output to the cpu and possibly still lower temps because its still a lower duty cycle. Thats why you dont run a single phase of 8 mosfets all tied together. You have A) 4 phases doubled to 8, running a 400mhz switching frequency (200mhz mosfets) and each has a 12.5% duty cycle. B) you have the same setup but without the doublers so 4 phases at 400mhz going to 8 mosfets at 25% duty cycle. They both have the same current handling (same number and type of mosfets) and pretty much the same output ripple as the output is switching at 400mhz but B has higher temps because it needs to be on for twice as long for the same output ripple OR you have to increase the switching frequency which lowers efficiency to bring that ripple down. OR C) the A model has its switching frequency doubled to 800mhz (400mhz mosfets) and 12.5% duty cycle. The efficiency per mosfet is the same as B because the mosfets are turning on/off at the same rate and about the same duration but the overlap between a phase turning on/off is smoothed out by another phase, it's like the smoothness of an inline 4 vs a crossplane v8. The transient response is increased and the output is smoother needing less caps and leading to better voltage stability longer life and better overclocks. Its not a conspiracy its engineering, otherwise we'd all have a giant single phase with 8 mosfets. *It is done for a reason*

That's a CPU that's going to last you a long time. Having the same core and thread count, and roughly the same clocks, as the CPU in the new consoles is going to be a good bet on "future proofing". Let's see if AMD doesn't launch a, say, 6700XT that weighs in right around console level of rasterization and ray tracing too.
