This video is the first of a new series called Bedtime Stories, where I clip moments of the podcast where they talk in depth about a historical event.I enjoy it when they do it, so I figured others do too. There's a playlist on my channel which will contain all of these vids. Enjoy!

I am pretty sure he got this from Dan Carlin's latest 'hardcore history podcast' series, the episode called 'Nightmares of Indianapolis. Not surprised Shane is a fan of his, Carlin is insanely talented at bringing to life these historical events through his retelling of them. I suggest checking it out if you have not heard of it yet. 100s of hours of immersive content! You're welcome!

Pretty sure I once saw a History Channel show when I was a lot younger where a survivor of this whole thing talked about how after long enough without drinking water, some guys would start drinking saltwater instead out of pure desperation and if they had enough of it, it would basically make them hallucinate. One sailor who’d been drinking saltwater insisted to a small group of other sailors that there was a water fountain at the very bottom that they could all get to if they just swam down deep enough, so they all followed him down and ended up drowning with him. As Shane detailed, seems like pretty much everyone who died during those three days did so in a slow and/or horrific way.

I have a Japanese Type 99 that was sent home from a USN sailor. It had his name carved inside the upper handguard.. I searched his census records, found out where he was from and his USN number and found a whole bunch of cool info. He served on the USS Marathon and on its way back to port from Okinawa it passed the Indianapolis, it's documented that the crew waved to each other. The Marathon also fell victim to the one-man suicide submarine (Kaiten) while docked and lost about 35 crewman but they managed to repair and sailed home with POWs and a merchant ship. Shit is crazy.

"A court of inquiry recommended a court-martial for McVay in September 1945, for his failure to zigzag and for taking too long to abandon ship. Commander Mochitsura of I-58 was given special permission to visit the United States to testify in the inquiry, and said that zigzagging would not have saved the Indianapolis." The Japanese commander testified saying McVay couldn't have done anything differently. They made an example of McVay when in reality he was radio silent and on a top-secret mission. It took them four days to rescue him and his men even though three separate SOS messages were receieved. Bullshit. Those families shouldve been writing letters to the government for their incompetency not bullying a Captain for what seemed to be an inevitable tragedy on his part.
