I'd say chemister's insight is actually a full two divinations. The jump-start costs you a card from your hand, but Divination costs a card from your hand too, the divination itself. It seems pretty righteous in this deck.

Dev, I just want to thank you for making this deck tech so early in this standard season. I've been playing a similar build and kind of refining it. I've been playing fight with fire as a 2 of finisher/removal in desperate times, 2 treasure maps, and a single copy of thaumatic compass to help me fix my mana/ramp/stop big dudes I can't burn. I've also found that I like to run 4 copies of syncopate as opposed to your 2 mainly because it can counter any card type and the exile clause is huge in this meta. I've also found that I like to run 1 copy of radiating lightning for the super go wide decks. Keep in mind I only play it in BO1 on MTGA. It's got me to gold so far and I've been on a pretty deece win streak the past couple days

I've been playing Golgari Saprolings. The versatility of the deck lets me run underneath conteol decks and can handle aggro rather well. It's value as well, very few 1 for 1s in my deck. The mana base is solid and the deck is so consistent, it wants to win around turn six by stalling the game, though I've had turn four wins against Jeskai and Nexus control. With the burn, this deck feels tight, but 1 for 1s won't cut it in this meta. I feel counter burn is well adjusted to certain decks in the format, but overall won't be able to consistently keep up with all the value decks in the format.

I've always liked the idea of blue/red counterburn. Best I've done with it was a deck that did damage using Wall of forgotten Pharaohs, Firebrand Archer, and red burn cards. The walls also obviously helped to stall if I missed a counter. If I got stuck late game and couldn't get enough damage in, I had a Sphinx of Magosi and a Shivan Dragon in there. Not as good as this deck, obviously, but it worked better than I hoped it would. Unfortunately, several of the main cards I used in it are no longer standard legal... =P

OK dev ! I do love this deck ! I've been brewing with Izzet CounterBurn for 2 weeks now, and I've come up with a deck similar to this one but i'm using Vance's Blasting Canon for more reach instead of Ral (and because i want Vance to get some love !) and Mission Breifing in the main, this touched my heart. And on the side, as you say i'm using Firemind's Research instead of Niv, because i want my opposant to not have any target for their removals. Anyway thanks for showing what Izzet should be
@obsidianmoon136 жыл бұрын
I think this is the best version of the izzet counter-burn deck I've seen so far. I've been running into a bunch of different versions of it on Magic Online and most of them just haven't been that great. I've been playing Dimir Control which you would think would have a bad matchup against the decks but have actually been able to win nearly every match. Niv-Mizzet is the reason I added another copy of Plaguecrafter though. Love being able to kill it without letting the opponent draw a card off of it. This version would probably give me a pretty good challenge. I have also started treating Risk Factor the same way, always letting them draw the 3 cards. Go ahead, draw your 6 cards, then draw 4 more with Chemister's Insight, then draw some more. It doesn't take too long until they are dead cards in hand because the opponents are trying not to deck themselves.

I was building Izzet Counterburn. Then I really just built Wizzet Burn with counters. It plays so fast that a decent hand ends the game in 3-4 turns, but it can still win late game against hard control (Sultai and Jeskai) Give that one a swing.

@jeffrey38376 жыл бұрын
I would really recommend using Devious Cover-up in here, two copies because it lets you play a late game without any chance of running out of cards, super good for the late game. This allows you in the late game to keep on refilling your deck with the cards that you want to have from the ones you have discarded to jumpstart, just discarded natively or just cards that you have played and want to have later if you are running out of that specific type of action. Because as a control deck you have several times where you are going to be behind countering all of their things but unable to get stabilized enough to just turn the corner and seeing as you are only going to be running the 4 ionize and just a few other counter pieces you are going to run out of gas if it is say a midrange deck that is going to just keep on pumping out cards nonstop that you may have to one for two bolts and so on to actually kill to keep the board under control. Thinking playing against a midrange deck it is going to be needed to have more counter removal for the late game that will let you go farther and extend it out as long as possible as stated earlier. because against a control deck or a aggro you shouldn't have a problem with your removal getting blanked or having to go one for two. Also this will help function as a late game commit to memory where you shuffle cards back in when needed (granted, it isn't going to give you a grip full of cards back)
@maxpheby72876 жыл бұрын
Nice deck im playing a hybrid version of this deck with the "prowess" wizards. Risk factor in the wizards burn deck is awesome because at the start of the game they will almost always take 4-8 damage from that card instead of letting you draw 3-6 cards which if they do they are nearly always straight up dead. Oddly enough the right thing to do is let that deck draw. Its a card that has no down side in the right deck ofc.

Looks like an awesome deck, probably a bit above my experience level (and budget for that matter) … but i am VERY interested in this color pair for the upcoming standard, there are *about 5 ways* to play R/U in this meta, be it this counter burn deck... OR … R/U Pirates, R/U Wizards, or just R/U budget value (which probably has 2 ways to be build) … And seeing I had great succes with a 16 creatures (8x two-drop, 8x three drop), 21 spells (mostly burn/draw ~ counters in the side) and 23 lands, in a couple of meta's ago, i think there is definitely a budget 'burn/counter' deck very similar in this meta, especially with jumpstart being there as well !

@SBMTG6 жыл бұрын
This is a control deck. It wants to play at instant speed 99% of the time. I'm honestly a little iffy on including the Rals. Creatures would just turn on our opponent's removal; as it is, we completely blank nearly all of the removal in the format, leaving our opponent with dead cards. We win off of our burn (usually a late Explosion where X=4 or so), so we don't need to add creatures. The Izzet spells deck that plays Drakes does exist though, and it's pretty decent, especially for those on a budget. But this deck has a completely different overall philosophy and gameplan.
@shishcabobgaming6 жыл бұрын

I play this deck on Arena, albeit slight variations, 4 Opts 3 Shock 2 Lightning Strike 4 Radical Idea 4 Sinister Sabotage 2 Risk Factor 2 Beacon Bolt 3 Ionize 4 Chemister's Insight 3 Hypothesizzle 4 Ral 2 Inescapable Blaze 1 Niv-Mizzet This is my main board, and the only reason I'm not playing the fourth Ionize is because I didn't have a wildcard to acquire the last copy, however I have lost more games decking myself (3 Times) than I have lost to an opponent (Once). The only game I've lost was to a Blue, Black, White deck that ran a Chromium finisher, and I haven't lost any competitive matches with this deck on arena

I think we are going to be having to run jeskai if we want to run counterburn. I say this because there are so many threats that are hexproof that we will not be able to deal with easily at all like Carnage tyrant and Vine mare. Hey Dev, have you seen the most recent 5-0 MTGO Comp league lists? There was a pretty sweet Arclight Phoenix Izzet deck you might like.

definitely looking like it's going to have to go jeskai [at lest for me local] all playing green stomp and tokens i think the hive mind here can come up with something [thousand-year storm looking awesome too]

Dev consider opt and beacon bolt. They do wonders. Opt gets you the right answer when you need it and turns on Ral and beacon bolt. Beacon bolt will drop lyra and big demons that lava coil won't

I feel like Opt is better in decks that want to play lots of spells, like Izzet Drakes or Izzet Wizards. As is, Risk Factor, Ral, Search, and Insight all draw us cards, and I feel like they're better options for those slots than Opt. Beacon Bolt, however, I DID seriously consider, to the point that it should've probably appeared in the "card I tried" section. B-Bolt gives us a way to take out bigger creatures than we usually can, and that's needed, but in the end I felt like we were using our sideboard slots better. I fully admit that it could be the right call. The only other deck I've seen it in this preseason was the SB of Izzet Wizards, which makes sense because that deck doesn't have access to Ral or decent maindeck counterspells. Considering we have access to both of those things, I didn't feel we needed Beacon Bolt.

I'm curious as to why you didn't run Goblin Electromancers in this. Sometimes it's nice to halve or almost halve the cost of all of the spells you play, plus it would provide a decent ground blocker for Ral in a pinch.

This should have jeskai counter burn. With access to teferi settle and cleansing nova it hold up even better in the mid to long game and again aggro. PLEASE DO A JESKAI COUNTER BURN NEXT,

Ral's starting loyalty is 5. He has a +1 effect, so I need to +1 him 3 times, then untap with him. That's 4 turns. "A couple" means two.
@SBMTG6 жыл бұрын
ACTUALLY, he has a +1 ABILITY. Abilities are not the same thing as effects. See how easy it is to be annoyingly literal? Good to have you back Willy

Happy you're finally getting to do this deck. Did you like Mindswipe when that was in standard?
@Humatra6 жыл бұрын
my playgroup doesnt play a lot of standard. but we go to prereleases, draft, and play planechase bralw. don't hate me for it. i am building niv mizzet brawl. probably use every card in this video that i can get my hands on.

What about Capture Sphere for big creatures? Maybe just a couple to catch whatever you dont manage to counter?

I really want to make a similar deck but using goblin electromancer and guttersnipes. Not sure how well it would work though

What about slotting in some river's rebuke for fighting token/aggro that our normal removal can't handle? Lets us stay in Izzit, though the cost is kind of prohibitive.
