Opponent starts game with 7 cards in hand, 60 - 7 = 53 First turn they draw a card, down to 52 cards. Play a fetch, crack it, deck down to 51 cards, start sweating and laughing maniacally At end of their turn, cast all 4 archive traps, milling for 4 x 13 = 52 total. Their library has -1 cards in it. Go to your turn, draw, pass, win the game. The dream!

I've had this deck, or my brew similar to it, for years now. Few random things I have tried or still use and work beautifully - Darkness (lol at twin decks of days past), snapcaster and tasigur, extirpate in sb, isochron scepter (darkness, visions of beyond ), oboro palace in the clouds (extra crab triggers ) and a random sword, (hedron crab isn't a defender!)

i run a similar version of this deck with a few key differences. I run a playset of snapcasters instead of the shadows guy for the versatility, i splash white for path for removal and another search trigger for the trap. Also a playset of ghost quarter is brilliant for triggering the trap and potentially strip mining them if they are trying to play around trap.

iv been playing a version of this deck for a couple years now and what I like is that there is a high level of customization. You've gotta have a Telemin Performance in the sideboard. For creature light decks it's hardcore mill plus you take Tron's Emrakul so you can mill them out (or just kill them with Emrakul).

Undead Alchemist equipped with Trepanation Blade. They mill, you get zombie tokens for each creature milled, then the milling engine is accelerated due to the number of zombies you've accumulated. I figured a UB zombie mill control build would work since I've played against that back in innistrad block standard.

thanks for the deck and by the way I love the deck idea just for the simple reason that Mill is kind of one of those decks where nobody expects it and it always can be a tear one deck for that reason alone

as well as ley-line of sanctity kind of stops your deck but with Manic scribe it kind of helps the deck out a lot just cuz it does say each opponent as well as mesmeric orb and if nothing else you could always sideboard in something like lab maniac for an even better alternate wind condition over and above Jace's Phantasm and I guess you could always add dust mantle guildmage with the infinite combo of mindcrank which by the way does not Target at all is well so it really puts the deck on the map and in the off-chance that they decide the shut off your combo and eliminate scribe Maniac with like rest in peace it's kind of like well I don't really have to go buy that game plan now it turns into I'm going to just Exile your deck instead which really shuts down a lot of decks for the simple reason that graveyard strategies are kind of prevalent right now such as Delver and zombies kind of being a deck combo decks to somewhat rely on the graveyard which actually even if you side in the ley-line of the Void it actually turns off your deck a little bit but not too much all things considered Love The Deck Tech and thank you again

I saw an almost identical build at my LGS but the player also splashed white for some number of Blind Obedience, slowing down the opponent and draining life with every mill spell he cast. Also added 2 (didnt see more than 2) Path to Exile, taking care of enemy threats AND the opponent searches the library (get's Archive Trap online). thought that was really sweet... mill needs more love! =)
@Kyle-xd1ci8 жыл бұрын
I actually prefer the esper route that way you can make them search using Path to Exile. Also Trapmaker's Snare is perfect to search out an Archive Trap when they search their library. Also gives you the colors to run your own Leyline of Sanctities. Another good sideboard especially when you mill an Emrakul in someone's Tron or Nahiri deck is Ravenous Trap. Set Adrift is also a phenomenal card to deal with your opponent's Leyline of Sanctity.

I myself am in the midst of constructing a dimir mill deck. I was skeptical about the Manic creature, still am. I feel like a playset of Twincast in its place may be better I think my main deck looks somewhat similar to this deck. 4x Jaces Phantasm 4x Hedron Crab 4x Visions from Beyond 4x Thought Scour 4x Glimpse the Unimaginable 4x Mind Sculpt 4x Memory Sluice 4x Twincast 4x Breaking Entering (Note: replace mind sculpt with Archive Trap..? Maybe replace a memory sluice, twincast, and a thought scour with x3 mind funeral) As you said, its a race against the clock, and I feel like my version can get off.and go quickly, I may add I have not play tested it, but in my mind it seems as though it has what it takes. I like the idea of Thought scour because it still mills, but also enables more draws along with Visions... I would prefer some Twincast's because if the conditions are permissible to an archive trap, or two going off, and one were sitting on two, maybe even four mana we can replicate that spell once or twice enabling 26-39-52+ cards.which is stupid. Even so I believe a Twin cast on a mind funeral, or Breaking/Entering is great. I feel it would really shine with an archive trap or mind funeral though. I like Memory sluice because it's still cheap, and initially as potent as a Tome Scour, but could render itself as Breaking/Entering if we have the creatures to enable the conspire mechanic, which I like the idea of. I believe a cut on some cards for a couple mind funerals might be wise though. I believe a sideboard of crypt incursions is ideal, maybe some riddlekeepers, Traumatize, Jace Memory Adept, Startled Awakening, Ashiok(s), Nightmare Weaver, Nemesis of Reason, Consuming Aberration, Increasing Confusion, Dream Twists, Mind Grind.... things of that nature possibly..

Rimewind Taskmage (just trade out the islands for snow-islands) and the Mesmeric Orb. Tap the Orb and the end of their turn, it becomes innert. but almost anything that taps or becomes tap flips itself off when it is tapped, even things that don't normally tap. nice little twisting of the rules, Tap Orb at the end of their turn, and you untap everything including the Orb with no drawbacks like from the Orb.
@thefoolsarekings8 жыл бұрын

Hey Wedge I run an Esper Mill deck. Full list below. I find it a bit more resilient than running strictly U/B. Most of the card list is the same except for the inclusion of an one of Eldrazi, Path to Exile , Breaking/Entering , a downgraded creature list, the sideboard and the adjusted land base. I am interested to see what you think of this over the U/B version. Having been playing mill for a while now I have tested with multiples of versions of the deck I have found all creatures other than Hedron Crab to be largely ineffective in my case as creature heavy decks will often tempo out the deck by killing said creatures the turn after being cast to gain an advantage you cant get back from. Making removal more or less dead draws since the deck isn't designed to be interactive. In my experience, the current list I am running makes most of my opponent's removal spells dead cards and makes my removal twice as good. Path to Exile eats big blow outs like Goyf and serves as dual purpose of exiling a problem creature, allowing our opponent to search for that basic and play Archive Trap on the follow up play or bluff out the opponent out of searching effectively exiling a threat with no draw back. Same principle with Ghost Quarter. Mind Funeral is a card I have kinda grew to hate over my time play mill. You are correct that it can blow out land lite decks but in some cases, it can fall sort of Breaking/Entering. I prefer Startled Awake in the slot as it can be brought back in the late game once Traps are exhausted and it mills 13 cards solid with no drawback. I prefer a guaranteed mill count than something that can lose me the game on luck of the draw. The one of Emrakul is something I have been testing out and it is something that has saved me games and kept me in the game longer with multiple Orbs in play without the risk of milling myself out which is something that I have had happen and its not fun. As an one off the deck it allows graveyard shuffling if hit by the Orb and allows to keep the deck full of mill spells. Startled Awake also helps out here as if I have any extra mana left open, I can get Persistant Nightmare on board with a solid chance of hitting Emrakul. On some fringe cases I have had it hidden under Shelldock Isle as a win con and since I don't have to pay for its mana cost, i am casting it and thus given the extra turn. 15/15 spaghetti monster is pretty strong as the one of here. Especially when you list where you can theoretically mill myself into Emrakul, get him with Entering + Shelldock Isle and beat face the same can be done with any opposing powerhouses. Ensnaring Bridge, I am on the fence about this card. Yes it stalls but it also takes up a utility slot that can be used for more mill. I prefer to run Ghostly Prison as it just adds to the Orbs power level. Finally, White Leyline. Shuts down the U/B version of the deck. With Esper there is always a chance to hard counter it through discard, natural milling or through Disenchant. Main: 4 Archive Trap 4 Breaking / Entering 2 Crypt Incursion 3 Darkslick Shores 1 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn 4 Flooded Strand 2 Ghost Quarter 4 Glimpse the Unthinkable 1 Godless Shrine 2 Hallowed Fountain 4 Hedron Crab 1 Island 3 Mesmeric Orb 2 Startled Awake 3 Path to Exile 1 Plains 3 Polluted Delta 3 Shelldock Isle 3 Surgical Extraction 1 Swamp 4 Thought Scour 4 Visions of Beyond 1 Watery Grave Sideboard: 1 Ghostly Prison 2 Disenchant 2 Mind Funeral 2 Engineered Explosives 3 Inquisition of Kozilek 2 Rest in Peace 2 Stony Silence

This is an archetype I've been playing with on and off with for years, and I think SOI might really have some serious fuel for the deck. Instead of Manic Scribe, however, I have been eyeing off the rather tasty Thing in the Ice to provide some much-needed defense and a fairly serious alternate win-con that your opponent cannot ignore, and doesn't really care at all about effects that reshuffle the graveyard back into the deck.

I've always loved mill...at least the idea of mill. I'm not a fan of creature heavy builds though like this one. I usually only run 4-7 creatures. 4x Hedron Crabs, and I've experimented off and on with 2-3x Snapcaster Mage. I then play Damnations...and though this is super casual...I've actually been nothing but happy with running a couple of copies of devastation tide in my deck as well. It's also great to splash white. With the amount of fetches we run, it's not an issue at all. What white brings in is 4x Path to exile. Amazing removal, that (along with ghost quarter) helps you abuse archive trap. I've also...being the noob that I am...have experimented with varying numbers of twincasts. Usually 2. It's a TON of fun having 2 archive traps + twincast in hand. Mill 39 for 2 mana? YES PLEASE!

I would run Mirko Vasks instead of Mind Funeral. He costs one more and has the same effect but it triggers when he deals damage to a player, since he has flying, that usually isn't too hard. Plus he can double as a blocker if you're having issues holding on to really quick aggressive creature decks.
@Scrungusss8 жыл бұрын
He actually costs two more than Mind Funeral. Still would run it though. Pay 5 once and if they don't have a response to flyers you're in. Sideboard the Mind Funerals and if they have a lot of flyers bring in the Mind Funerals in their place.

@Gattawon8 жыл бұрын
I think esper mill is stronger. you can put Path to Exile in the mainboard and that has synergy with Archive Trap; move bridge to the sideboard. white also gets you disenchant and leylines for yourself against burn if your meta needs them. 4 copies of surgical extraction should be in the main! it kills so many decks if you know what to extract. i also like getting rid of the phantasm for snapcaster.
@MTGEDH8 жыл бұрын
Esper is good and I agree with most points outside of Snapcaster. He is too slow. You need at least 4 mana for him to be good which is not consistent with the land base. Phantasm gets online faster for both offense and/or defense. 5/5 can stay on board longer than a 2/1. Not to mention being a flyer in modern is pretty relevant.
@Gattawon8 жыл бұрын
I agree that snapcaster is only good later in the game, but I think he's a free archive trap, path, surgical extraction, or glimpse when you're in danger of running out of gas. this is not a deck that wants to deal damage, so I think phantasm is contrary to the library attack strategy, but that's just my opinion. I'd rather get more cards milled and chump block with the snap, than have a 5/5 flier that can get killed with almost any removal spell
@MTGEDH8 жыл бұрын
While Snapcaster might help late in the game you can have a 5/5 Flyer T1. Snap literally dies to everything so it can't chump much. Forget having 2 5/5. That is potentially game in 2 swings regardless of how many cards left in a library or creatures on board as most decks aren't running flyers. Not to mention it blocks 90% of threats no problem. In a meta of fast decks you can't afford to wait and get potential value from Snap. It isn't as consistent as phantasm. I know it seems counter intuitive to do both mill and beatdown but just like affinity can switch from normal damage to infect it just works.

what about "Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver" ? 3 mill each turn, and if they want to get rid of him, they have to attack (mostly) him, and he buys you some time. +razorx540 I tried snapcasters and twincasts when I first started playing mill but I ended up cutting them pretty quickly. Jace, Vryn's Prodigy however, is very good - it's worded differently to snapcaster so you can cast archive trap for free, you can get the flashback effect multiple times, and you don't need to pay 2 mana in advance in a deck that rarely has a surplus of lands.

razorx540 I thought the same thing, but I think that Twincast is even better in.a sense..But it all comes down to preference, do you want to.establish more board presence with a 2/1 creature, but also spend the the additional cost of the spell. example; Glimpse, Snapcaster, then Glimpse again, so u need atleast 6 mana to do this within the same turn.. I feel like I've played so many fast decks in my life, that Twincast has greater potential at an even faster rate, mitigating 2 less mana. Example; I would rather Glimpse, Twincast, then Twincast again at converted mana cost 6, than to throw in a Snapcaster in the equation, he slows down the method imo. All preference, again.
@heliocentric77057 жыл бұрын
ExistToComment I was thinking Twincast would be far more prevalent than Snapcaster. Interesting Jace, Vryns Prodigy is more beneficial, going to reread him.

this build has me thinking about a deck I'm building that has pithing needle and jester's cap in it in main

This kinda reminded me of a deck I built a few months back trying to figure a deck to get into Modern with. This build though...it's just mean o.o
@Isheian8 жыл бұрын
What do you think about a small red splash for pyromancers accession? Maybe adding the pyromancers goggles for free copies of your mill spells.
@Isheian8 жыл бұрын
Or psychic strike, protect your mill spells or screw up their day and make they mill as punishment for trying.
@nallstarr8 жыл бұрын
I ran psychic strike for a really long time in my UB mill, but ultimately it just slowed me down because I'd save mana when I knew a crushing spell would be coming at me instead of more milling.

only thing i would add would be tramatize or fleet swallower from ixalan

My first ever deck in MTG was a sphinx’s tutelage / enter the infinite mill with some gurruks wake, yeah a really bad deck, its been two years now i run this deck in modern, and i love it!

This is literally my mill deck aside from subbing breaking and entering for glimpse because of cost

Hey Wedge, what are your thoughts on Spellweaver Helix? I tend to play a lot of multiplayer casual so I also run Consuming Aberration. I do really like this deck tech and will be building towards it in the near future.

I've one on turn 0 will mill, when i was on the draw. I drew all four archive traps, they fetched, and I laughed to the point where I almost needed the Heimlich maneuver.

Ravenous trap or leyline? Exile for grudge and reshuffle triggers. I side them.

Well, I play a U/B Mill Deck too, mostly for fun. After i played a few Rounds against a Friend, a Question popped up and i was looking it up. It Seems like Mesmeric Orb can be "counterd" in a way i never imagined. Here is the Rule Setting im Speaking of : 502.2. Second, the active player determines which permanents he or she controls will untap. Then he or she untaps them all simultaneously. This turn-based action doesn’t use the stack. Normally, all of a player’s permanents untap, but effects can keep one or more of a player’s permanents from untapping. Either i am Dumb as Hell or the Ruling Says that u can choose what u want to Untap !?!
@cbrsdf18 жыл бұрын
+Atztec1 The rules tells us that you determine which permanents won't untap for an effect. It's quite the contrary. You untap all your permanents, except those that an effect keep them from untapping.
@Atztec18 жыл бұрын
Cesar Barrios Well the problem here is that this "Obvious" State of effect, doesnt get mentioned, its literally untap what u want. imo
@Niedomysm7 жыл бұрын
Wedge I know this comment is really late to the party but I wanted to see what you think of psychic spiral in the deck. It may be a hefty cost but you would have plenty in your grave to hit them for and also get everything back to keep milling.

How important would using ensnaring bridge be or could you switch it out for Fraying Sanity
@fuzzytubeman61627 жыл бұрын
Brayden Chapman I'd keep the bridge, drop the orb. The sanity would punish an opponent more than the orb could

+TheManaSource how do you feel about the jace from origins (cant remember his name off the top of my head because i'm bad) . i know hes expensive but with the traps and the rate you want to be casting your spells, he seems like he would be decent for a bit of reccursion, plus in walker form he might eat a few points of damage for you which could end up saving you. im not sure if it is viable or what you would want to change seeing how im nowhere near an expert in modern but it seems interesting.
@varasatoshi39618 жыл бұрын
Whenever I make a modern mill deck it always has 4 crab 4 tome scour 4 mind sculpt 4 breaking/entering and 4 glimpse the unthinkable. Then for card advantage I run 4 visions, and to interact with that I run 4 sphinx's tutelage and 3 Jace's erasure, and for good measure 3 mind funeral.
@varasatoshi39618 жыл бұрын
And 4 crypt incursion
@PsiberPiRat8 жыл бұрын
I hope this sees headway. I like mill a lot. Only other things I could wish for is wizards printing some actual counterspells and giving mono blue a viable way to win by postponing to super late game that isn't abusable. Neither of those are likely if I'm being honest though
@davidk.40348 жыл бұрын
Okay Wedge. Question. I've modified my UB Mill deck on MTGO to be more like this build, by adding the Orbs, the Bridges and the Phantasms. I personally don't like the SOI two drop, I'd rather run Snapcasters for their value. I also run Nephalia Drownyards, because sometimes you need that reach. Have you been playing with this list at all, trying other things, or are you too busy with all the great content you put out here?
@tcorninptown8 жыл бұрын
Looks like an awesome deck, i just dont see how it will get through infect. I guess boarding in surgical extraction for your crypt incursion will help, i just cant see that helping enough though.

@ferdithetank75358 жыл бұрын
So, how does this deck fights against Leylines and Eldrazi Titans? If Leyline of the Void hurts our strategy(makes Crypt Incursion and Visions of Beyond bad), than maybe sideboarding Relic for such cases?
@KWFlange8 жыл бұрын
It is probably too much to splash white for path to exile (removal for one white if they don't search and free trap if they do), but what about thought scour for mill 2 plus card draw for 1 blue?
@warrenlantz8 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not, I played against this at my game shop a few weeks ago. Opponent was running this list minus the ensnaring bridges. He threw in Surgical Extractions.

Hey Wedge, I've been trying to make my own version of this deck for a while, going back to this video several times. I guess I'm just going for a budget version of this. Anyway, here are my questions: first, is it worth it to have Jace, Memory Adept or Ashiok in the sideboard? Second, if we can't afford polluted delta and the like, is there any reason not to use Espur Panorama or Evolving Wilds instead?
@rapajara8 жыл бұрын
I'd throw a consuming aberration in there, probably a great addition
