I was 17 when this came out - Whenever I hear it - it takes me back to my youth more than any other - it's so distinctive. The lyrics we always thought were not about a literal Hotel but instead a lifestyle of excess, drink, drugs, money - of California at the time. Once you were in it was hard to escape again.

I was 12 when this song dropped and I grew up listening to all The Eagles tunes! This song is one of my favorite songs. My best friend and I would sing this song and jam and get stoned and laugh our a$$'s off. This song has a ton of meanings and it's really up to you to choose. The guitarist with the bandana is Joe Walsh and he is a phenomenal guitarist. I grew up in New Mexico and was always going to California during summer vacation. I swam in the Pacific when I was 10 years old and I loved California but I also know a lot about how the Hollywood scene and the famous and wealthy are not always the happy people they seem to be as they smile for the cameras because their lives end up so messed up. I always took the lyrics to mean that Hotel California is like a destination that calls to people and it looks fabulous with all the glitz and the glam and the drugs and the non-stop party scene. Then that lifestyle drags them in and it is really a life of death that they can never really leave.

The song is often viewed as a critique of the American Dream, which promises success and fulfillment through hard work but can lead to emptiness and despair. The hotel, which seems like a luxurious and desirable place, is actually a prison of sorts, reflecting the idea that the pursuit of wealth and fame can be hollow and ultimately self-destructive.

@Lulabee20249 күн бұрын

@kristinkeiner65479 күн бұрын
@@MugnifyRTS, it’s not. The song is literally about California, Beverly Hills and the Beverly Hills Hotel, to be specific. Henley decided on the theme of "Hotel California", noting how The Beverly Hills Hotel had become a literal and symbolic focal point of their lives at that time. Henley said of their personal and professional experience in LA: "We were getting an extensive education, in life, in love, in business. Beverly Hills was still a mythical place to us. In that sense it became something of a symbol, and the 'Hotel' the locus of all that LA had come to mean for us. In a sentence, I'd sum it up as the end of the innocence, round one. Frey came up with a cinematic scenario of a person who, tired from driving a long distance in a desert, saw a place for a rest and pulled in for the night, but entered "a weird world peopled by freaky characters", and became "quickly spooked by the claustrophobic feeling of being caught in a disturbing web from which he may never escape. Part of the lyrics, such as "Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends / She got a lot of pretty pretty boys she calls friends", are based on Henley's break-up with his girlfriend Loree Rodkin. According to Frey's liner notes for The Very Best Of, the use of the word steely in the lyric "They stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast" was a playful nod to the band Steely Dan, who had included the lyric "Turn up the Eagles, the neighbors are listening" in their song "Everything You Did". Frey had also said that the writing of the song was inspired by the boldness of Steely Dan's lyrics and its willingness to go "out there", and thought that the song they wrote had "achieved perfect ambiguity.

Your comments about how we need more music like this, and more talent without the embellishments of studio trickery (and god knows what AI is going to do to it) got me thinking. Today's music is a lot like shopping for food. Much of today's popular music is like prepackaged processed food in the store. It might taste good but it's full of crap that tricks you into thinking it's something good. But when someone can sit down with an instrument and and a mic and make you feel something special that's like cooking from scratch at home.

Love the reaction. I have always felt that the line'you can check out at any time,but you can never leave' was referring to those 'own devices' that keep you that prisoner. You can indulge in your vice(what ever it is),until you are passed out,comatose,stoned ,or dead. All of those infer 'checking out' but to leave, or cure yourself of those addictions aren't going to happen at the 'Hotel California' cause everyone knows 'in California' they try every new thing that comes along. The Eagles are one of my favorite bands. They always seem to come up with lyrics that hit home or ring true in their story telling.

Don Henley (who co-wrote HC and sang lead) said in their 2013 documentary History of the Eagles, “My simple explanation is that it’s about a journey from innocence to experience. That’s all.” Glenn Frey (the other co-writer) said that he and Don like to write songs with “hidden deeper meanings” and then they just sent them out to the world. The Eagles’ musical and personal histories are one of the longest lasting, successful and chaotic in the last fifty years. They are currently doing a residency in Las Vegas.

Indeed, we can interpret this song differently and that's what makes it interesting. Some think he is talking about purgatory, others about hell, still others about the world of showbiz or why not about addiction to a particular drug. I'm not sure people will ever agree on the real meaning of this song. For me it is one of the most beautiful songs I have listened to. I must have listened to it hundreds of times I think and it still has an effect on me.

I saw them sing this in concert 6 days before this was filmed. I haven seen them 11 times. They never disappoint. Don Henley who,sand lead studied literature in college before going to California to search his music career. Lots of his lyrics tell a story. R of the 5 members (at this time sang lead at one time or another. Don Henley and Glenn Frey (acoustic guitar) do most of the lead vocals. They are perfectionists which contributed to their break up in 1980. Check out more of their music ….. they are amazing. I,liked when you said the two home boys looked a like. Tiffany's was a luxury jewelry store, and "Mercedes Benz/ds" is a pun on "Mercedes Benz" the luxury car brand and "The Bends", the potentially fatal injuries divers can get if they swim to the surface too fast. So "Tiffany-twisted" and "Mercedes Bends" mean that she's focused on wealth to the point that it's twisting her mind and making her sick. I suspect that "called up the Captain" is a reference to the duo Captain and Tennille, and that "They stab it with their steely knives" is a call-out to the group Steely Dan, but those are just guesses.

MR, the song is up to the listener to apply their own meaning, but it was based on getting caught up in the drugs and fame in the 1970s SoCal lifestyle at that time. "They stabbed it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast" and "you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave" lines refer to addiction (of whatever your addiction is).
