Respects to both of the Champs! Read some comment on this vid that says that "this man was just lucky to have ran into the old Ali" Well this was not just "some man" his name is Leon Spinks and there's nothing lucky about both becoming the heavyweight Champ of the world, nor having to face the greatest of all time! And add that Neon Leon was also Corporal Spinks USMC just one year before his 1977 Championship! This is a Man that no only didn't draft dodge but he voluntarily enlisted in the toughest service during a time when we were still at war in a very unpopular war. Then when Ali wanted a rematch, he gave it to him in spite of knowing it wasn't sanctioned by WBC... This Man was not some lucky guy, he worked hard at his craft. He's not the legend that Ali is, but he is worthy of respect.

Leon Spinks was a very dangerous fighter. He had this stamina and what made him dangerous was that he had this 🥊 punch he would throw from his shoulder. He’d put his head down and whip this wide angle 🥊 punch that would connect and just shock people. It just came out of nowhere. That’s why it worked so well. Impossible to see coming. He caught Ali with it a couple times to the head and rocked him with it. His style was very unusual and hard to defend against.

“...he had ‘this stamina’ and...’this punch’...” And THAT is the essence of what analysts mean when they say a fighter has “a puncher’s chance.” 👏🏾👍🏾😎 A fighter needn’t have otherworldly skills to become champion; he only needs to have mastered a devastating skill and an executable plan. KEEPING the title requires more, but any good or talented fighter can win the title, and maybe even hold onto it for a fight or two. Only the elite fighters can keep the title.

It really doesn't tho does it lol. I mean I'm no boxing expert but its CLEAR TO SEE that the Ali we're watching here pales in comparison to an Ali in his prime... NOT taking anything away from Spinks' boxing talent however.

Not old but Ali did not trained well for this bcoz he took him very lightly he thought it would be an easy fight for him later with good practice Ali took his title back to win over Spinks by UD.

What i learned is that leon closely won, very nice back and forth from both fighters but the problem falls where ali couldnt dance around spinks who wouldnt back up, he stood toe to toe with ali and exploited a gap which was ali's distance, he broke through his range and landed quick clean shots, very close fight but it seems like ali couldnt dance around spinks because he kept coming, just like frazier, no backing up, but all in all its an impressive feat to beat the great ali, just to think that this is leons 9th pro fight, Amazing.

Ali went from exuding all the confidence in the world, and moving around the arena with elegant brutality - to dodging after punches landed, looking visibly confused and even angry with his inability to focus.. nobody knew he was suffering so deeply, not even Ali; he just thought he was off his game, when he shouldn't have even been in the ring anymore. Such a damn tragedy..

What an incredible boxer Leon was... great, great fighter. Underrated because he was overshadowed by Clay, Foreman and Joe. Boy, the late 60s/70s (and late 80s, 90s, early 2000s) where great years in Heavyweight.

I had the honor of befriending Leon before he moved out of Nebraska. And I'll tell you, he was a very humble man. I used to play pool with him back at the Eagles Club in Columbus NE and hed always let me win even though I was only 11(ish). I've missed him a lot through the years, but soon I hope he watches over me when I plan on stepping into the ring. Rest in Peace Leon you'll be missed.

Got to meet Mr. Spinks about 20 years ago.. actually spent the evening drinking and hanging out.. could definitely tell then he had lived a colorful life... lesson learned from that evening.. never go to breakfast at a Waffle House at 2am with a retired boxer that's had way to much to drink and missing his front teeth.. All in all, one of my personal favorite adventures

I was at Spinks' training camp at Kutsher's in the Catskills. They had a banner up saying, "Leon Spinks: Next Heavyweight Champ of the World." I thought "no way". He had only 8 fights up to that point. His trainers and sparring partners said he was going to do it. Still hard to believe he beat the great Ali.
