As a multipotentialite, I get bored easily. I find new obsessions, dive deep down a rabbit hole of Googling, researching and watching all the videos. Then I convince myself I need all the stuff that goes with this new interest, until it's no longer an interest. Then I've wasted, time, money and energy on something I no longer care about.
Does this resonate? In this video I share how I've overcome my fleeting obsessions and the impulsive spending that goes along with it. I hope it helps if you struggle with this, too.

After suffering through this for many years and not knowing that multipotentiality was even a thing, I worked out that the 'real' interests eventually come back around again. Knowing this about myself let me put things down without too much shame/regret but I had to make sure at the outset that I have a 'shut down' strategy. That is, when you take on a new interest, make sure you can give it a special spot or system to store it so that when you come back you can pick up where you left off. Leaving things laying around unfinished is a real downer but having them stored away gives at least some form of closure....until next time :)

I definitely feel seen, lol. Until two years ago, I didn’t know a lot of these particular things were related to ADHD, and it made me feel so much more validated that I’m not crazy - lol. I’ve wasted thousands on hobbies that I end up not pursuing. I’m still figuring out (after 43 yrs), how to live in a world not built for our brains…it’s a wild ride! 😅

The most eye opening statement as well as the most soul-crushing one to hear from my wife is "how long is this going to last?" because at best it's a couple of months, with up to years in between. It was one of the key things that lead to my ADHD diagnosis. Fortunately now I'm fairly cyclical as my interests are within a set core, and learning to not be so hard on myself when I invariably switch. I still get frustrated that I don't really master anything enough to keep going - instead having to re-learn stuff to catch myself up.
@CarenMagill
@CarenMagill Жыл бұрын
I get this. But maybe mastery is not the point? For example, I've been a dabbler my whole life, but you know what? All my various skills are serving me now in this work. As Steve Jobs said, you can only connect the dots in retrospect. Trust that your interests are taking you to the right places. If you cycle through them faster than your wife, it could be just that you complete things faster because you have an interest driven brain. We need to stop looking at this as a fault and start seeing it as something we can use to our advantage. Just be mindful to manage impulse spending. That's the downfall. Try challenging yourself to explore interests without spending money on them until you're SUPER clear that it's what you want (or there is a path to retrieving your investment).

I've never been diagnosed ADHD but I definitely recognize this trait in myself. I'm a remote freelancer and I get a big dopamine hit from changing clients, winning new business, starting endless "side hustles", and moving from country to country. I'd say that my hobbies are more stable and I can generally maintain stable romantic relationships, but I do tend to need a lot of stimulation one way or another. I feel a lot of shame around this because I was never able to "fit into" the conventional school and job system, despite being told I was smart. I feel grateful to get to do all the things I do, but other people don't always respect you when your lifestyle is unconventional, and that wears you down.

Before you take that RV leap spend some time in one, either a rental or a trip in which you just stay in one. There is an amazing one I stayed at but it also taught me RV life wasn't for me. It is called Epic Bluff campsite and they provide the RV all set up and ready to use on this amazing site with breathtaking view and the host are amazing.

Thank you for deciding to create this channel on youtube and thank god that i founf your channel. I always hated myself for not sticking to one thing like most other people. My resume is filled with 1yr stints in different companies. My house is filled with tools that i bought for different interests. My understanding of this trait was i don’t have a “stable” mind. The more i listen to you, the more i understand that my traits are probably all due to adhd and are more biological and that I am not “messed up” in my head. I get emotional sometimes listening to you because i finally feel like there’s nothing wrong with me and there are people like me out there. Looking forward to the group session on monday! ❤️ - Priya

Oh Priya, it hurts my heart to hear you say that you hate yourself for any reason. You are exactly who you are meant to be. The sooner you can embrace your differences, the sooner you can create a life that supports them! Can't wait to meet you!

@@CarenMagillI have adult adhd, but I don’t have a lot of hobbies, I find this a struggle to find new hobbies. I also find that when bored, I shutdown and don’t wanna do nothing and I find that I just laze around doing nothing, but relaxing 😎. I find that I’m energetic and a lot of my energy is shown through talking 😂. I have the combined type, but I spend a lot of time daydreaming and I can be inactive physically too. Do you see this with combined types? I’m energetic, but more in the social sense and yet lazy.

I have watched at least ten of your videos. And never had someone just understand and be able to explain ADHD so well. Especially, for those of us who have had some degree of success, it can be difficult to articulate how ADHD impacts our life. And then you give realistic methods for coping with our uniqueness.

This is helpful. However I spent thousands on a nutritional therapy course (I had and have been interested in nutrition most of my life) but the way it was taught was so boring I couldn’t follow. I’m still paying for it now. I’ve also noticed as I’ve gotten older my interest in anything is waning. and interest in anything doesn’t last long. I think I’m also scared of going all in on something again to get bored in a few months. The cycle is now getting to me and I don’t have anything to show for it

Great Video Caren! I am currently sitting in a jungle of my latest passion - house plants. Will they survive? They bring me joy and make our house more healthy and happy and of course I found them mostly on deal so I'm ok with it. But I a bazillion interests and I'm always looking for that one thing that I can say is me - so I can accomplish something in my life. But you're right! Who says we have to stick to things? I've accomplished being interesting and bringing joy to others - maybe that's enough!

I just had a conversation with one of my good friends. She had hobbies. I realize I don't have any. I don't feel any negative way about it though. It's said that not having hobbies is a sign of depression, but I don't think we have to have hobbies to enjoy life. I still have interests, past times, and passions. Just no hobbies.

Or, maybe you're just "complete" with that interest. When you say "abandon it", it implies that you did something wrong or shameful. You just out grow things... just like you did with your childhood toys.

I cycle through hobbies and interests very quickly. Art, decoupage, journaling, card making, on-line courses etc. The one interest I have stayed with for over 40 years is history. But that waxes and wains a lot. But I also accumulate vast amounts of knowledge in this way. (I’m known as the family go-to when anyone wants to know something) And my cupboard under the stairs is jam packed with stuff I’ve bought for all these hobbies. Ah well......such as life with ADHD. 🙄👍
