@@johnmcdonald9304 This isn't happening in some historical vacuum, the US helped to destabilized the entire region decades ago. Reagan backed the Iran Contra in the mid-80s which left Nicaragua in crisis, as well as central America as a whole. Then we have the drug wars that's not only poured weapons into Mexico, but also spawned ops by the CIA that created many of deadliest sicarios in the country. Whoops! Oh, the US under Obama backed the coup in 09 in Hondurus too. Any lasting democracy will take commitment by the US to, at the very least, stop interring. Fuck. As someone who migrated to the US at one point in his life, this hit me hard... I'm back in Mexico and I'm doing okay, but now I realize that there are people who have it even worse than me. I know I can run an errand, walk alone at night and come home in one piece. Mexico is far from perfect, but many Central Americans should consider staying here. It's a helluva lot better than Honduras.

I was born to Honduran immigrants and its really aggravating how all of these people in the comment section below are bashing them. How do you expect them to actually do something for their country when it's flooded with gang members and corrupt officers. When they can't even try to become better people because they are constantly harassed or threatened. You guys think its so easy to stand up to the gov't. And you guys really need to stop saying "if i were them" You're not them so shut up you are in no position to say that when everything is handed to you in America. My parents did not come to live off the gov't they came here to work and thanks to them I am able to go to a private school, have food every night on my dinner table, have the privilege to eat out few times a week, and most importantly live in a country where I don't need to fear for my safety. I hope one day some kids born to immigrants who have fled their motherland are able to live this way as well.

This report isn't bad -- at least it tells why Hondurans migrate -- but it perpetuates ignorance about why they're poor. Case in point: the ludicrous clip of Obama admonishing Central American presidents to 'improve their economies' !! How can anyone reporting on Honduras for an American audience ignore: * U.S. (and Canadian) support for the 2009 coup * first-world exploitation of cheap third-world labour and commodities * 'free trade' deals (such as the Central America one with the U.S.) that pave the way for multinational corporations at the expense of national economies * U.S. use and virtual takeover of Honduras in the 1980s (yes, Reagan) as a base for its illegal war against Nicaragua, whose people had overthrown their dictator * a century or more before that of the U.S. considering all of Latin America, especially Central America, as its backyard to dominate and exploit (Guatemala and Honduras were the original 'banana republics') American media is great at human interest stories. But stories without context and historical understanding leave viewers ignorant.

Just couldn´t hold the tears. I´m a proud Honduran, and I can assure you this video states the unbelievable truth. Some might say stuff here is not as bad, but before believing what they say, please consider that they might belong to a minor privileged sector (as if the images of wealthy homes next to slums didn´t provide enough evidence of the country´s inequality). I surely consider myself privileged, too (just the fact that I´m typing this in English proves it), but the difference is I don´t live in a bubble. I am aware of what´s happening. I don´t fall for all the bs that´s constantly thrown out to our people daily by our local mainstream media. And most importantly, I am not sympathetic to Juan Orlando Hernández´s Narco-state regime.

I was born in America and have lived here my whole life but my family is from Honduras and I have experienced first hand how hard it is to live in Honduras. You cant blame these people for what they do. When you have a family you do what you can to provide and if that means drastic measures like coming to the US illegally then you do it. Its really as simple as that. These people are controlled by gangs that threaten to KILL you and your family if you dont comply. They extort families and bring terror to communities. On top of that Honduras has an embarrassing excuse for a government with rich politicians that dont care about the poverty in the country. And the few that do usually get murdered because they try to take power from gangs and thats a no-no in Honduras. Its really sad to see because these people are trapped. Honduras is a very beautiful country with beautiful people and a rich culture but they are oppressed and live in fear every single day. To be honest I dont know how to feel about Hondurans making their way to the US illegally because I can see both sides of the spectrum. It is a huge problem for the US that has no easy solution. And for the people that say things in the comment section along the lines of "keep these 3rd world thugs in their own shitty country" or "place guns at the border and kill all of these people" fuck you. How could you be so ignorant and arrogant? Do you not realize that these are human beings? This not only goes to Honduras but all of the countries in the world. Including the US. The only way to get rid of poverty is to come together with compassion and love and stop being so damn greedy and judgemental. But sadly I dont see this happening in my lifetime...

I think if deserving and courageous immigrants are so desperate to make that trip over to the U.S. They should be afforded the opportunity to live here. I can see the government putting that $3Bil into creative initiatives that help make immigrants functioning and successful ppl contributing to our economy, paying taxes, and showing privileged Americans what perseverance and hard work can get you in this country. If these greedy poorly ran countries cannot take care of their citizens the U.S. should be caring, creative and ambitious enough to use whatever money we are going to spend anyway to capitalize on the situation.

90% percent of the problem here is something no one ever ever wants to speak about.. That is this if you stop having 5 or 7 kids you can not feed or take care of then most of these problems would be a lot easier. When you have a populous that keeps growing and growing and has no way to feed themselves or educate themselves you will find these problem of the stronger praying on the weaker and sicker and older. All of the problems are stemmed from over population with no means.

Really? 90% of the problem??? While your argument may be an apt criticism of the catholic church's view on contraception, your argument makes no sense in explaining poverty and violence in countries like Honduras. The fertility rate in Honduras is 2.46 births per woman which is only slightly above the global average replacement fertility rate of 2.33 births per woman. In comparison, the US fertility rate is 1.80 and in the 1950's the fertility rate nearly reached 4 births per woman and the US still went through a period of economic growth. Also did you not watch the video? The video literally shows how this woman had to take care of her brothers kids after he was murdered. Which part of that gave you the idea that women in Honduras are having 5-7 kids. Sure high fertility rates and overpopulation are a problem for developing countries but to say that 90% of the blame of the extreme poverty and violence in Honduras can be attributed to women having a lot of kids (which is not the case at all) is very ignorant.

I lived in a border town. I saw how it slowly changed from a peaceful beautiful city into a drug infused hell hole with murders and robberies that we'd never seen before, with even garbage everywhere in the streets. At first the guilty were punished, but as corruption crept into the local government and police force, that too changed. Within a short period criminals could openly break the law without concern. Is this what we want for other American cities? I understand that many of these people are trying to escape their own hell holes, and are just looking for work, but opening up the gates is not the solution. Why don't we try fixing our own country first before we import more problems. Do you know how many children are murdered in Chicago every year for example? Do you know how many American children go hungry every day? If we can't even solve our own problems, we can't save the children of South America. We simply do not have enough resources any more. Why can't they do what our founding father's did - start a revolution and remake their country? We did it against the strongest military of the time, so certainly they can do it as well. Making unaccompanied children walk hundreds of miles so that they can sneak across the border cannot be the only solution.

This is why there should be a limit as to how much money a single person can make, and there can be more money than just what the greedy politicians take from us, and it should be sent to countries like this. The fact that a single human being can have 10’s of billions of dollars, while even $100,000 could go so far in a country like this is ridiculous. A persons doesn’t need more than 1 billion dollars for a lifetime, or even 50 million.. it’s the arrogant stupidity that comes along with having all that money where their lifestyle choices make it seem as if they have to have more money to pay for their new cars or several million dollar homes etc. There’s beyond more than enough money in the world to keep every country out of poverty and that third world country status.

Brony me Ten Years Ago Portugal Legalized All Drugs -- What Happened Next? When the nation legalized all drugs within its borders, most critics predicted disaster. But a decade later, drug use has plunged dramatically. July 14, 2011 The government in Portugal has no plans to back down. Although the Netherlands is the European country most associated with liberal drug laws, it has already been ten years since Portugal became the first European nation to take the brave step of decriminalizing possession of all drugs within its borders-from marijuana to heroin, and everything in between. This controversial move went into effect in June of 2001, in response to the country’s spiraling HIV/AIDS statistics. While many critics in the poor and largely conservative country attacked the sea change in drug policy, fearing it would lead to drug tourism while simultaneously worsening the country’s already shockingly high rate of hard drug use, a report published in 2009 by the Cato Institute tells a different story. Glenn Greenwald, the attorney and author who conducted the research, told Time: “Judging by every metric, drug decriminalization in Portugal has been a resounding success. It has enabled the Portuguese government to manage and control the drug problem far better than virtually every other Western country." www.alternet.org/story/151635/ten_years_ago_portugal_legalized_all_drugs_--_what_happened_next

We need to start paying attention in our own hemisphere the central americans need a Marshall plan to help with the poverty and injustice there.

The US still sends billions to the northern triangle in central America, so you are wrong. Plus Israel is not the only one recipient in aid in ME, Jordan and Egypt receive billions as do others. There are billlions also sent to Africa and Asia as well so your myopic view and focus on Israel is wrong. Even if you stopped aid in ME, that won’t solve northern triangle central America problems, who are still given billions.

Americans absolutely should not spend our taxes in Congress trying to figure out why Hondurans are illegally entering Mexico. Trying to come to America illegally of course isn't going to help them at all. They come w/ no papers, no ID's then expect to enter. Apparently none of them got the memo, we're Americans don't want our taxes being spent on illegals. The process required is they get to an American Embassy and apply like the rest of the world and you can only enter is accepted on a merit system. No harm wished on anyone, prayers lifted.

This is the result of US imperialism in Latin America. In 2008 US backed coup took place in Honduras and as a result military thugs came to Power by kicking the Elected president into Exile. His only fault was planning to turn US military base into civilian Airport, Since Honduras could not afford to make a new airport. But, US shamelessly kicked the Country into poverty and problems that we see Today and Refugee crisis is one of them.

Okay this was very poorly researched. First off crime started to rise afterPresident Maduro left office under Manuel Zelaya, secondly the Drug lords moved into Honduras during Zelayas governance exacerbating the already poorly managed government of Zelaya. I could go on and on but surely people can do there own research and stats. Very disappointed instead of looking to solve the issues in Honduras this video turnes out to be more propaganda with half truths.

It’s a very sad situation. I hope that the leaders of Honduras get a grip on a fair system for all their people. To let your people down is a real shame and to force them to leave because you can’t treat them with dignity is even sadder.. As far as the USA goes, most of us have a humanitarian heart but we are a democracy and some citizens don’t want to be financially responsible and they have a say in our democracy. we can’t keep the gates open for all to come in. We have to do our due diligence also. I believe in miracles .. I believe that the good men of Honduras should revolt, think of a strategized plan.. and take their country back. Sometimes the only way from keeping sinful people from hurting the innocent is by going to war.
