Great to see you back. I really like your video’s. Your channel is for me the way to go for all Logic Tips. I have the Yamaha XS6. I forgot that the units are already that “old”, but still sound really good and fresh.

I’m still using two 88’s of Motif XF’s . I love these and know how they work. No, I miss the fire wire capability. I still do my songwriting and recording on that synthesizer sequencer in a straight line. All help to keep these functioning in this decade is appreciated. Thank you, sir. You do a fine job. You know I just wanted to tell you that.

You are my go-to for all things Logic. Noting how you boosted the input level resolved a key question, and that tip about the bus/latency/volume is priceless. Thanks again!

I'm at about 11:00 in the video. It's fascinating that Logic has incorporated all these features in a DAW. It's like a never ending list of what it can do!

So essentially this is a work around for the old Environment, that I can't seem to get to work with my older Yamaha S90XS? Or at least a slightly more manual way of getting Logic to changes bank and programs in my external keyboard but still just as effective. Thanks for the walk through! Using the Environment the S90 would actually show up in the Instrument list by name.

So helpful. I wasn't able to use existing MIDI data, for some reason. But it worked when I recorded a new track. Not sure why. Other than that, everything went OK. Thanks for the music-tech help, guy.

Great to see you back! This might be useful when I want to record some of the internal sounds from my Kawai MP7. I'm very much looking forward to the Audio section of the series. I am still hoping for a full sampler (not quick sampler) tutorial one day :) Still can't find a decent one on KZbin. I find the plugin so confusing.

Great video. Actually I figured out how to use external instruments few days ago, before this video was published. But I didn't know you can send change program events directly from the plugin and use a bus to route sound. I just started using / learning Logic recently. And you don't need an expensive external device to try this out. I was using cheap Casiotone CTS-410 piano which has 600 sounds. Actually I like some of those sounds more than Logic software instruments.

1:52 PST i have my nord recording and playing back due to your excellent instruction. Now i've got an audio for the mic. Two problems: regardless of input (nord stage 3, or mic) all meters are dancing. I can record both BUT on record the previously recorded is in gray-even though it records and plays back. On "Local Control" to access the nords sounds. The "previously recorded material persists to switch to gray , with or without the audio track. I realize i'm asking a lot but i can't seem to find a book or a person (other than you) who fully understands what's goin' on here! Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thank you. BTW i did watch #66; the external midi video. Peace

Hi, just discoverd the external instr. plug yesterday. Strange thing though; my plug lacks the Program change section where I (hopefully) can change programs. Is my Logic to old? I´m on 10.7.7. Thanks!

If I want to do this with VSTS how would I achieve that? If I'm recording a patch in Kontact, for example, and want to change the patch on the fly without stopping recording, how would I do that?

I am having an issue with some of my 3rd party plug ins loading instruments from other plugins. Can you provide a video on how to resolve this issue so that the 3rd party plugins will only have the instruments relevant to that plugin? I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and still the same problem exist when I launch that particular plugin in Logic ProX 10.4.8/OS High Sierra 10.13.6 Please help...pulling my hair out in frustration! Thank you.

somebody knows if there is a way to export alchemy or retrosynth for instance to a real analog synth and filter further analogically cutoff etc, and send back to logic as audio benefitting from a more phat sound?

With your keyboard/controller plugged into the computer, how do you record what you are playing? Is it just hitting record on the midi track with the external instrument? Would that also mean you can play the synth (and hear it) before you hit record?
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy Жыл бұрын
Yes. Sometimes what I do is choose a starting instrument in Logic and record the MIDI, then find a patch I like and print it. However, you are correct that you can use this same setup to play the hardware in real-time.
@johnbeer2854
@johnbeer2854 Жыл бұрын
This is such a convoluted method Logic has introduced. It's far quicker to just create an external midi track without using it as a plugin, and a separate audio track, and then just record to audio when you want. All of this creating a bus etc is a pain. Logic should have just had an option within the plug to print audio directly.
@andym7333

so cause it goes thru a bus it compensates latency when recording ....but not in a normal audio track ??? dont understand why whats the point

Great stuff, but can't you just create a new audio track and select the correct inputs and record the audio (instead of making a bus?)
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy Жыл бұрын
I explain that at 14:37. You lose the latency compensation and volume adjustment from the External Instrument plugin. But yes, you can do that as an alternative.
@tendingtropic7778
@tendingtropic7778 Жыл бұрын
@@MusicTechHelpGuy aha, i did not realise you lose the latency compensation if the midi is still coming from the external instrument plugin with the autocompensate latency checked on. in that case your method is definitely better!

Not wild about the characterization of using the 'external instrument' with hardware synths etc as a "more advanced niche MIDI thing". More people I know work with outboard MIDI synths, samplers, drum machines than those who work 100% "in the box" with software instruments. The external instrument' plugin has been around since Logic 7 (if not much earlier) and for good reason, people like myself had an arsenal of hardware instruments long before software instruments were usable or any good.
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy Жыл бұрын
If I had to guess, you are my age or older. I’m 38 and 12-15 years ago I primarily used hardware instruments. However the last 15 years have seen some really awesome improvements to software instruments, to the point where I barely ever use hardware instruments anymore. I used to own a whole rack of hardware synths, but the motif is the only one I still own. I would argue that the vast majority of composers and producers these days are using software instruments, and using hardware synths is definitely in the minority these days. Most up and coming producers and songwriters under 30 have probably never even used a hardware synth, much less an analog synth, save for maybe a stage piano, or maybe using them in live performance. And even in live performance, in the last decade we’ve gone from needing a rack of hardware, to just needing a solid midi controller and a laptop. I’ve played entire live sets with a midi controller and Logic or MainStage, and even that was 10+ years ago. That’s just reality man. I’m not knocking hardware synth users at all, I still use a lot of hardware for mixing and mastering, which is also becoming less and less common. But the idea that hardware instrument users are more prominent in 2023 than software instrument users is just not true. To anyone under 30, using hardware synths IS an advanced “niche” thing. And I guarantee you that the vast majority of people who watch my videos are not using hardware synths on the regular. It’s not meant to be a insult, it’s just reality.
@Robert44444444
@Robert44444444 Жыл бұрын
@@MusicTechHelpGuy - 1st, I wasn't insulted. 2ndly, I did not assert, "hardware instrument users are more prominent in 2023 than software instrument users"… I wrote "More people I know work with outboard MIDI synths, samplers, drum machines than those who work 100% "in the box" with software instruments"… meaning they use BOTH hardware & software instruments in their work (hence the "100% "in the box" part)… and yes, down to a person, both myself and these people I know are now well over the the age of 30 ;-) We use both HW & SW instruments… is that less common with younger users?… I'm sure that's so… but it's not like people using hardware instruments are rare… FWIW… I'm glad you do what you do as mastering any DAW is a huge undertaking and the more quality resources for learning the better.
