My first song also. I am 71, when I talk old school I know. I didn't discover them until about six months ago and now own three pf their cds including their brand new one. where have I been since 1996? I been playing guitar at my church. I thought all heavy metal was of the devil, but Night Wish mostly has a love nature and others message only loud with a lot of bass and drums. Floor is an angle, not just her voice but listening to her speak on interviews I believe she is a wonderful person.

Hello @ Music With Maunalee! Nightwish Army incoming here, your reaction just appeared on our radar.. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing in front of a 82k+ people. About what you felt (the goosebumps..), just you to know: it have a name, it's called FLOORGASM (after Floor Jansen's name, the female singer) :) Since this is your first Nightwish experience, I'll give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan: " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a female fronted symphonic metal band. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrulmentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol " Other Nightwish songs with the current lineup of the band you may like: "Ever Dream" live at Wacken 2013 (uplifting vocals) kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6iqhHR8ltd7iMk "Song Of Myself" live at Wacken 2013 (dark/metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooLYZoSgnsl7jck "Storytime" live at Wacken 2013 (uplifting vocals) kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqfOiqqFf7-ChLc "Romanticide" live at Wacken 2013 (metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKvCaIJ5eLafjtU "Dead Boy's Poem" - live Buenos Aires 2018 (soulful ballad) kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWmoZH9tnMx_g68 "My Walden" live at Wembley 2015 (celtic / folk) kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZ_UlnxuZZyNors "Sleeping Sun"live at Tampere 2015 (ballad) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKTSpZ-wp56qhNk "Stargazer" live at Tampere 2015 (operatic vocals / metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJmopnSGjtKSi8k "Slaying The Dreamer" live at Buenos Aires 2018 (metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXKXZaeglrVopJI "I Want My Tears Back" live at Buenos Aires 2018 (celtic / folk vibe) kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGK4m5qlr8p8hrM "Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean" live In Buenos Aires 2018 (metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmOZo5Ksdr6EZrM "Weak Fantasy" live at Tampere 2015 (dark metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3-VZGyGl9aVoNE "7 Days To The Wolves" live at Wembley 2015 (dark metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqfWl6p3hceKjsU And if you want to hear Floor growling :) then try "Yours Is An Empty Hope" live at Wembley 2015 kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKqvpIhthphmac0 Last but not the least - they just released their 9th studio album on April 10th named "Human :||: Nature" - just take a peek to their official playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLihZ3gi5Yvzc0pfH2cbNKUUX8o3pb8eVg You can also react to Floor Jansen's performances in Beste Zangers 2019 (TV show from Netherlands), here is a playlist made by Floor herself (start listen it in reverse order..): kzbin.info/aero/PL8iSYWeQhlimgUnWw1FDdiJN0msPzqpLo Thank you! Your facial expressions were priceless, lol. The first time I saw this performance, I had also never heard of Nightwish previously let alone Floor Jansen. Now, I am an insanely critical listener of music. To impress me, it really needs to be the next level beyond mesmerizing. As soon as I heard the opening instrumental, I stopped it, got the big sound system set up, and started over not having heard Floor yet and thank GOD I did that. Can’t tell you how many times I has voiced regret for not having the right sound reproduction for experiencing otherworldly performances for the first time. When she sang on through the performance, I knew I was hearing one of the greatest live vocal performances I had ever experienced. It was emotional and there isn’t much I can point to that had such a profound effect on me. What a treasure. You come from the business side of things which is where I have always found the most jaded and cynical view of musicians and their motivations for performance. Floor is so pure it’s scary and I could clearly see this performance cut through for you pretty strong as well. Good stuff. 👍🏻😎👍🏻

Which is kinda like saying Michael Jordan was a city boy with some hoop skills, Cassius Clay was a kid from the suburbs who was not a bad boxer, and Don Bradman and Babe Ruth were neighborhood boys who were fairly good at hitting a ball with a bat. All true I guess, but then again every once in a lifetime talent was a little kid born somewhere.

It's a recognition of simplicity. Simplicity in contact, not becoming arrogant or flaunting your sucesses in the face of others, is a highly valued quality in most northern (in the large sense) european countries. Not a century ago 85% of the population was made of farmers/fishermen/factory workers. We like people who succeed and manage to stay humble about it.

The basics on the band: Nightwish is a Finnish band, that was originally formed in 1996, with the then lead vocalist Tarja Turunen. She was a pure classically trained vocalist bringing strong operatic notes into the mix, and with Tarja the band became one of the first bands in the genre of Symphonic Metal - and remains the best known band in the genre. The band is the brainchild of the keyboardist, and song writer, Tuomas, and they achieved success with Tarja, but eventually, due to various drama and conflict, they had to let her go. Tuomas took it very hard, and fell into depression (and wrote a song about it: "The Poet and the Pendulum"). They then got another singer, Anette, who was basically good on albums but not as good live. Anette stayed until 2012, when she parted, and was replaced by the current singer - the on you heard here - Floor Jansen. She's Ductch, and she, IMHO, is the best singer Nightwish has had, and fits the band like a glove. In addition to the band on stage, in several songs, they have orchestral parts to their songs, that are pre-recorded (Some with the London Philharmonic Orchestra). The lineup at this concert, where the video that you reacted to was from: Tuomas Holopainen (keys), Jukka Nevalainen (drums), Marco Hietala (bass guitar + vocals [in other songs]), Emppu Vuorinen (guitar) and Floor Jansen (main vocalist) + the orchestral recordings. Later, the Drummer, Jukka had some health problems (very bad insomnia) witch led him to quit the band, although I understand he remains with the band taking care of stuff behind the scenes. He was replaced by Kai Hahto. They also got a new band member Troy Donockley, who is a multi-instrumentalist (his main instrument I think is uilleann pipes), and a singer. He can be heard in later songs and their current material. Lot of variety in music that they produce, and Ghost Love Score is one of their longer epics (alongside with the aforementioned, and very dark, "The Poet and the Pendulum", and their longest song, "The Greatest Show on Earth") To see a heavier side of theirs, I'd recommend reacting to "Song of Myself" from the same concert (though anything from the same concert is awesome). I agree with most of the stuff here, but not with ranking the singers better than others, they are just too different for a fair comparison. But as he said, sadly Annette was very weak during live compared to her studio recordings Anything from this particular concert is pure gold, all the stars aligned on that night and they just outperformed themselves for one magical night... thank GoT it was recorded into a DVD!

You just summoned the Nightwish Army!) Thank you for sharing your reaction and welcome to the world of Symphonic Metal! Instant Floorgasm achieved! Well, you've just witnessed Her Majesty Northern Valkyrie Goddess Floor Jansen (pronounced Yansen, she is Dutch). Floor has classical background, rock academy behind, and used to be a vocal coach for a number of years. Floor is the most versatile and powerful female singer today and can sing anything from more pop-y style, classic opera, to metal screams and growls. Floor sings emotions, not words. Floor joined Nightwish in the middle of their Imaginaerum world tour in late 2012 (which includes this show). Previous singer, Anette Olzon (she's currently in Dark Element) left the band while they were touring, and there was no certainty what to do with all the upcoming shows. They called Floor (her previous band did tour with NW in the past, and they knew each other). Floor flew immediately to help them out and temporarily replace Anette for the rest of the world tour. She arrived two days before the next show, and she had only 48 hours to learn the entire setlist. And she did. There is official documentary about all that -- "PLEASE LEARN THE SETLIST IN 48 HOURS" ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJmoqZ6jjLCAe7c ) For Floor it was first really big gig with Nightwish, 82K people, at the time she was only for a few months with the band. After the world tour, they made Floor their official member. This song was performed at the end of 90min show, at the 1hr 10min mark. Nightwish formed in '96 in Finland, initially with Tarja (Tar-ya) Turunen as a vocalist. She left the band in 2005, and Anette Olzon stepped in, until 2012. The bassist with a cool beard is Marco, and he sings some parts too. He has his own solo project outside the Nightwish. The mastermind behind 99% of lyrics and music is a keyboardist Tuomas. Guitarist name is Emppu, and the drummer in this show is Jukka (Yukka), but later he was replaced by Kai Hahto because of health issues. Flutes/uilleann pipes/guitar/vocals - Troy, he did not perform in this song. Nightwish is better live, always, so if live performance is available, go for it. In their performances, they often using recorded backtrack of a classical orchestra for their songs. They have very diverse music, from more light songs to epic scores like this, and to really heavy metal stuff. For the next step, I can suggest listening to: - Storytime from the same Wacken 2013 live - for move heavy: Ghost River, Song Of Myself, both from Wacken 2013 also - If you want to explore more Floor versatility, check out her performances on a TV show Beste Zangers in 2019. You just starting your journey with Nightwish, and be prepared to be surprised (and sometimes shocked) time and time again! Their music is very emotional and diverse. Btw, Nightwish released their new album on April 10th (Human. :||: Nature.). Greetings from Moscow and stay safe! ;) Looking forward to seeing more NW on your channel! Subbed!)

A word about Tuomas Holopainen, the guy on the keys. He is the composer, band leader, and originator of Nightwish. His peers consider him to be a musical genius. He draws inspiration from literature, film, and science. He'll tackle tough subjects like our addiction to social media in "Noise" or the slaughter of 100s of millions if not billions over the centuries from the wars of religious tribalism in "Tribal". He'll compose a song to a scientist, "Shoemaker". They'll sing about evolution, "Greatest Show on Earth". Their music is not the usual banal schlock that gets all of the air time.

Now that was a reaction I really loved, attentive, without stopping, great image and sound quality... And of course the verdict, loved that too. :) The genre is called symphonic metal, is a mixture of metal and some symphonic elements, and Nightwish pretty much (co-)founded it back in the late nineties. They were founded in 1996 around a campfire in Finland and are going strong (in fact, stronger and ever stronger) until today; they just released a new album and were planning to be on tour now, but that has of course been postponed. The genre is popular in Europe and South America (more of an insider tip in North America, though), and Nightwish is its biggest band, selling millions of copies worldwide (their new album hit the charts at No. 1 in Germany, for example). The band is Finnish (Finland's biggest musical export, in fact), the vocalist (their third and IMO best) is Dutch, a sixth member who you haven't seen yet is English. Personnel: Floor Jansen - vocals (since 2012) Tuomas Holopainen - keyboards, main songwriter, band founder and leader Emppu Vuorinen - guitar Marko Hietala - bass guitar, acoustic guitar, vocals Jukka Nevalainen (on this recording, later replaced by Kai Hahto for health reasons) - drums Troy Donockley (not on this song) - uilleann pipes, whistles, bouzouki, guitar, vocals The band has had three vocalists: founding member Tarja Turunen (Finnish), who sang (now sings as a solo artist) in a dramatic operatic soprano style throughout, which was very unusual at the time combined with metal and helped spark the whole genre. She was fired in 2005 and replaced in 2006 by Anette Olzon (Swedish), who was more of pop rock singer and didn't really fit, especially live she couldn't keep up with singing Tarja's parts. She was fired mid-tour in 2012 (there's been some icky drama about both firings) - she has her own band now, The Dark Element - and replaced by Floor Jansen from the Netherlands, the vocalist in this recording. Floor has been a professional metal singer since she joined her first band, After Forever, in 1997 at age 16, has several years of musical education (musical theater and a year of opera) under her belt and used to work as a vocal coach herself. Her first band After Forever split up in 2009, she formed her second band, ReVamp, which has two albums and existed until 2016, and doing everything herself down to management and booking, Floor had a severe burnout, from which she was still recovering when Nightwish called her to ask her if she could step in midtour. She hopped on a plane right away and had 48 hours before her first gig with the band, in which she had to learn the setlist. Along with Troy, she was made permanent in 2013. I guess you could tell, but she is a world-class singer, a lot more versatile still than what you have heard here: she can sing opera, sweet ballads, jazz, scream, growl (!), belt like hell... Also, she uses all the different colors to great effect in her storytelling. And then there's her stage presence. Common nicknames include Valkyrie, Amazon (she's 6 ft tall, works out a lot, and starting from 2014 has acquired more and more tattoos, in fact she's tattooed more than you right now), Queen, Goddess... she has a devoted following too (count me among them). Over the years, the band has pushed the boundaries of their style and was very versatile to start with. No two songs on an album really sound the same, especially in the last four albums; Tuomas really is an outstanding songwriter with an ear for good melodies and structure. They go from melancholic ballads to Celtic folk rock/metal to prog rock/metal epics like this one to outright thrash metal. They normally go heavier and faster than Ghost Love Score. I'll append a list of what I think about covers their spectrum (not completely, though, they are just too versatile) below. When you react to them, you should do the live shows, especially since they have Floor, who elevates almost every song she does and makes it into a stellar performance. There are four great concerts with Floor to choose from: Wacken 2013 (this one), Wembley Arena 2015, Tampere 2015, Buenos Aires 2018. With Tarja, their first singer, who is very, very good too in her own way and worth checking out too, there's "From Wishes to Eternity" (2000) and "End of an Era" (2005), both filmed in Finland. "End of an Era" is the very last concert with Tarja, right after the show she was given an open letter by the other band members to tell her that she was fired. (They guys in the band have matured a bit since then, and the atmosphere in the band today is finally friendly, cooperative, and brotherly. Might have something to do with Floor and Troy too.) Okay, here's my list of songs that you might want to check out: Romanticide, live at Wacken 2013 (heavy heavy metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKvCaIJ5eLafjtU Song of Myself, live at Wacken 2013 (thrashy metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooLYZoSgnsl7jck Ghost River, live at Wacken 2013 (metal, great duet between Floor and Marko) kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZmbImqeaYqp0bKs Dark Chest of Wonders, Wacken 2013 (metal, high-energy opener to this show) kzbin.info/www/bejne/haeydWmumsijnpY Ever Dream, Wacken 2013 (pop rock/metal with glorious vocals by Floor) kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6iqhHR8ltd7iMk Storytime, Wacken 2013 (poppy metal with more great vocals by Floor) kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqfOiqqFf7-ChLc -- In fact, all of Wacken 2013 is great, just pick any song -- Sleeping Sun, live at Tampere 2015 (beatiful ballad) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKTSpZ-wp56qhNk My Walden, live at Wembley 2015 (Celtic-infused rock) kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZ_UlnxuZZyNors Nemo, live at Wembley 2015 (was a minor hit in the US back in 2004) kzbin.info/www/bejne/moOUmHtrlraKeLc Weak Fantasy, live Tampere 2015 (heavy, critical of religion) kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3-VZGyGl9aVoNE Yours Is An Empty Hope, live at Wembley 2015 (very heavy, with Floor growling in the chorus) kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKqvpIhthphmac0 Alpenglow, live Wembley 2015 (pop metal with a great positive vibe, for when your day needs brightening) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKOtp36Qg6qbbck 7 Days to the Wolves, live Wembley 2015 (personal favorite of mine, heavy, epic, energetic, watch Floor turn Warrior Queen) kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqfWl6p3hceKjsU Sahara. live at Tampa Bay 2015? 2016?, from a smaller venue (Middle Eastern tinged, great vocals again, one of my favorites) kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooXZipmClpmKos0 Stargazers, live Tampere 2015 (old Tarja operatic song, fast and power-metalish) kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJmopnSGjtKSi8k I Want My Tears Back, live in Buenos Aires 2018 (Celtic party metal, watch Floor tear it up on stage) kzbin.info/www/bejne/inOylZqun8djoa8 Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean, live Buenos Aires 2018 (heavy, fast, great Floor/Marko duet, olympic vocals) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmOZo5Ksdr6EZrM Dead Boy's Poem, live Buenos Aires 2018 (very intimate and personal power ballad, sung touchingly by Floor) kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWmoZH9tnMx_g68 Slaying the Dreamer, live Buenos Aires 2018 (heavy, thrashy metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXKXZaeglrVopJI Then there's the other two big epics: The Poet and the Pendulum, live Wembley 2015, and The Greatest Show On Earth (I prefer the Wembley version here, better intro, darker atmosphere, famous guest star at the end, but most fans want Tampere 2015), but I would put these off until later. Especially The Greatest Show On Earth requires some research as to lyrics and subject matter. (Many will say the same for The Poet And The Pendulum too. I personally love the song, but in all honesty quite dislike the mindset behind the lyrics in this particular case. Nightwish lyrics are always poetic and well-crafted, but it took Tuomas a long while to mature in subject matter too, until the point where they're simply gorgeous on the new album. However, knowing the backstory will help you understand what's going on in this song.) And then there's the new album entitled HUMAN. :||: NATURE., which has lyric videos on YT for every song except for the song Noise, which has a superb "video video". Also, you might check out Floor's performances on a 2019 Dutch TV show called Beste Zangers, which finally catapulted her to stardom in her home country and proved what an incredibly versatile and powerful singer she is. Look for YT user "jenniezelf", she has a lot of videos from the show with English subtitles. So, if you decide to keep reacting to Nightwish, you have quite an enjoyable journey ahead in my opinion. I would really like to see that, as you seem a thoughtful and sympathetic and intelligent reactor. You do have to get a bit into metal territory, though.

12:34 the Floorgasm brings yet another convert to the family !! 😁 Welcome Sister. You’re one of us now. Just FYI, that’s about 70 minutes into the show and Floor had been killin’ it the whole way already. Also, that’s 82 THOUSAND people hanging on her every word; so, no pressure on her to Bury that (9 second long)high note.... At 6’1 and 170 pounds Floor is a smiling, singing, dancing, enchanting, stage commanding Valkyrie; and to me at least, a gift from above. Seeing the whole video of this concert, Especially the Floorgasm changed my life. It made me start listening to music again. I love watching these reaction videos and my biggest hope is that people follow and enjoy the Symphonic Metal path I was led to. Welcome to it. 💙💙💙All Hail Floor !! 💙💙💙 Nightwish Army Infantryman This is the holy trinity of Nightwish songs live with Floor fronting... LOL! Who are these people??! Priceless, love the reaction, keep it coming and the Nightwish Army will take you under their wings for sure. Fair warning, you are already on the radar now, so hold on to your boots cause here we go :-) There is so much amazing, goosebumpy music to discover in Nightwish it's hard to say where to begin. I would suggest keeping it to this Wacken concert, every single song will blow your mind. I would recommend, Storytime, Romanticide, Song of Myself, Ever Dream, Ghost River to name a few highlights for me. Moving forward, when you are ready you have 2 absolutely EPIC performances you cannot, cannot, cannot miss. The Poet & the Pendulum live from Wembley and then The Greatest Show on earth from Tampere. but even with that your journey has just begun, they have just released a brand new album Human Nature, all songs are posted as lyric videos on youtube, would strongly suggest to do a marathon through all 9 songs. But stay at Wacken first... Either way you do it, you can't go wrong, Nightwish are truly an incredible band in so many ways, you have just now scratched the surface of what this band can do. have fun!!

It is simply an instinctual response to hearing Floor singing; she literally has the vocal ability of Freya, or some other Norse goddess! It made me tear up the first time I heard this particular song... & I don't cry, I'm a 43 year old farmer, a country boy from Arkansas... But She moved me with that voice, very much so. Nightwish is a recent discovery for me as well, don't feel bad anot having known about them... I am a classic rock, and pop from 70's, 80's, & 90's type of music lover personally... I mean The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, & Nirvana are some of the best artists I had ever heard before I stumbled upon a reaction video to this exact song.... I actually fell in love instantly, sincerely.... Seriously though, I feel like this type of stuff, me instantly absolutely loving something so immediately & without any reservation whatsoever; hell, that honestly is precisely the sort of thing that simply doesn't happen in like 95% of cases, and it actually one of those special rare finds, there are so very few truly significant & memorable moments such as that during the entirety of most folks lifetimes... This song, and at least two other musical masterpieces Nightwish performs (Actually they are the second & third most popular reaction videos made from Nightwish's material: "The Greatest Show om Earth", & "The Poet and the Pendulum"; Both of which are simply incredible works, true art that can make anyone sincerely feel the deepest of emotions which any music is capable of.

Hello, Nightwish Army reporting from the UK, just seen your reaction , liked and subbed. I understand your confusion, I literally first heard of Nightwish less than a year ago . Since then they just keep proving themselves over and over to be one of the very best bands in the world. Every member is a virtuoso, composer Tuomas Holopainen is a poet/genius and Floor Jansen is literally one of the best female singers alive today. What is truly outstanding about her is her incredible vocal range and control in a multitude of singing styles. You can see her diversity in the Dutch TV show Beste Zangers from last year. Since you asked for requests I'll put one in for Floor guest appearing with Epica performing Sancta Terra. Best wishes and I hope you enjoy diving into the Nightwish rabbithole!

Nightwish is difficult to classify on just one listen, because as you explore their catalog you will find that each song is unique and has its own separate vibe. And yet, they all sound like Nightwish. The breadth of this band is phenomenal, they have SO many great pieces it’s difficult to put them in any sort of ranking. The most consistent thing about the band, though, is their excellence. Especially with Floor (their 3rd singer who you just listened to) and especially live. They’re good in the studio, but they are one of the best bands in the world when performing live. A lot of people have already made recommendations for how to continue their journey, so I’m just gonna say enjoy the ride and hang on! It’s a wild one.
