For Indian, It was actually true. American dream actually exists. People who went to US in 2000 or before that, they actually earned and saved good money. If They decided to stay in US, at that time it was very much possible to get GC and Citizenship in 5-10 years. Even if they decided to come back to India, they own 3-5 flats and have good investments as in 2000 expenditure in India and US both were less. Point is they are very successful. Now its not even possible to live in city like New Jersey, Boston or California with Family with one person earning. Rent and other expenditures are too high. There are much between opportunities in India to pursue. But I guess worst thing in USA for Indians at this time is Uncertainty. Petition for extension, visa are all getting rejected. You have to pack everything in 2-4 weeks and leave USA.

Thanks for the information. One small correction - after 6 yrs of H1B and you start using the I-140 (green card application) sponspored by the Employer, you can get extension usually 3 yrs similar to as if you were on H1B and not just 1 year.

I was told by an insider, that the IT guys make 65,000 a year for working 12-hours a day, 6 days a week. The American citizen doing the same job in the same office for 8 hours a day for 5 days makes $ 190,000 a year. Besides they watch Indians like a hawk to make sure that they are working. If they go to rest room ,a security guard goes with them to make sure ,they don't spend too much time in the bathroom. The salaries in India are getting better and continue to rise. I am told you can get $ 65,000 a year there, With low cost of living in India that goes a long way. Besides you are in your own country and are not facing racist stares and slurs like in USA. .

I have friends who returned back due to same details mentioned here. Another aspect which somehow seems deliberate and overlooked is that the system is left this way intentionally perhaps. More no. of applicants lead to more F1 fees and also more revenue for the colleges and local economies like rental apartments or grocery and so on. Moreover it seems the vast majority of the consulting IT companies exploit the H1 B employees by keeping them in a loop. It's a win win for govt , universities and such American and desi consulting firms which take advantage of this situation. I am not referring to the people who did MS or PHD from reputed univs and working with fair US companies. But such F1 students and H1 are by far very less .

Very true; My elder brother is in US, and on H1B visa; And I've seen all his struggles in getting, renewing, and transferring H1B visa. Good coverage. I am impressed you covered EB1 category too. I got my I-140 approved in 40 days in EB1 Category in 1997. I graduated with my PhD in 1997 and was married two years before I graduated. I graduated in May 1997 and got my OPT for one year (In those days we get only one year), gave my credentials to lawyer with most of my savings given to her as fees, she first sent EB2 and then sent EB1 in August 1st week and both got approved in September 3rd week. We then filed our I-485 and we had our EAD in December 1997. I never went through H1B visa and went from Student F1 Visa to become a Green Card holder. I struggled a lot during my MS + PhD for 6 years affecting my health adversely as the research problem was very difficult to get a solution but all that struggle paid off with my Green Card coming within 6 months after graduation.

Later I had to learn Pascal for doing a Project for a Professor. Then, took a course in C in MIS department. When the two Faculty jobs did not come after interview, I was getting better job offers as Software Developer in 1998 with my Programming skills and hence made dramatic shift to IT. But, my Ph.D gave me Green Card in 6 months.

Ek samay around 2012-15 I too aspired to go to US by any route either by somehow getting sponsored by employer or by doing MS because all my friends were flocking US( in a rat race). Dekhadekhi I too did GRE TOEFL and i got an admit from MS in SE from ASU Poly campus but couldn't attend because I was bit indecisive to do MS just because I wanted to settle or do a job in US plus my parents wanted me to get married because I was enaged in early 2015. Another chance came in same year 2015 when my employer sponsored me L1B but the project was scrapped for which I was about to travel. In 2016 when i left my employer, I left my American dream with it. Fast forward July 2020 I thank god and my stars that I'm here in India happily and US ya Europe jane wala bhoot utar gya mere sir se. Thank's to my family ( my wife and my parents who never gave importance to US dream and at times explained that anybody life success is not measured by going and settling in US). We should be work hard here and be contented what god has given us and he will provide right things at right time when we work with right intentions. God bless everyone. P.S. Many of my brilliant, hardworking friends who went to US and studied in top universities there around 2014-15 has returned to India because their 3 year OTP has expired and they could not win an H1B lottery during these 3 years. I feel very sorry for them.

Some that many never realize or imagine : 1.To survive in USA Students from India must be proactive , independent and be ready for diy works which when compared to India all are pampered. College fee seems too much of lifetime cost of hard earned Indian currency. 2. H1B and all visa extension costs are so much along with attorney fee that almost u shell out some savings from pocket to just keep staying in USA. 3. Two kinds of job for IT prof contract basis and permanent. Salary , allowances differ according to that. U r never paid the same as Americans. In contract unless u get best salary saving is a challenge and a slow process till u get green card. Sometimes the savings will go off in one trip to India. If couples are both working it adds good savings. This is a reason why people visit India once in two to 3 years. If lucky flight cost can be cheaper. 4. When u r new to USA remember u are starting ur life from the scratch in USA. First one to two years will go in just settling down that too with most necessary things needed for family running. Just bcas of visa issues and uncertainty all the time mostly until green card is applied and I140 is received many don’t try to live luxuriously at all . Because saving is the foremost priority for the first 6 years of H1b. Mostly people plan not to spend like in India ,though some do. 5. Unless u r in cool US based IT company Mostly all indian based companies have same work ethic like in India. Too much work pressure. You shud be ready to update new tech with this work pressure. 6. H4 visa the dependent of H1b cannot work or get salary in any form until they get EAD ( employment authorization document) . So he or she who is on H4 be prepared to wait for at least 1 year or more to get EAD and goto work. 7. In USA every thing is “do it yourself “ Tough for all homemakers. 8. The way kids learn is different. Mostly parents have to go through videos , learn and then teach kids. We may not teach the same method of math we learned in our school days. 9. Medical bill , medical Insurance costs very skyrocketing high here. U goto hospital based on appointment. Appointments u get at least within 1 week or 2. Sat sun doctors don’t work. If any emergency health pblm or kids fall sick suddenly or fall down going to emergency is the only way out. 10. Every state is USA has extreme weather conditions except few may be. Either too rainy, too hot , too cold , too much snow , too dry deserty etc. Not all states are high with IT companies. Every state is expensive and inexpensive in its own way. Choosing the best city according to opportunity/ salary / saving and weather all are imp . 11. It may take abt min two months to get the first job depending on openings. 12. No job openings during Dec due to holidays.

This was an awesome video! I had the same questions 10 years ago and when given a chance for applying for an H1-B, I chose to do a Ph.D. in Canada. I see my compatriots in the same boat as what you describe, and it's really hard to get a Green card. I came to US silicon valley on work visa and always tell people who look for opportunity here to always compare their current package in India and cost of living as per their spending with what they are going to be offered here. And then take decision. Like you I do tell that you are not going to be settled here for life - so always be prepared to go back. Work in USA and invest in India, the return is 10 times higher, by the time you are about to return to India, you already have assets built. If you invest in retail sector in India then you have a portfolio built for yourself that will return rental income and money flow created for you.

If you are coming to US, make sure you're coming for your PhD, not MS. I did my MS, now on my H1B. And I wished I did a PhD. Yes, it's very hard to get a green card through sponsorship but PhDs have a certain category under which they get Green card faster. Anyways, it's not an American dream anymore if you're trying to get a green card here, but it's in no way , a waste of time and money. American higher education is 100 times better than Indian education. That's a fact. Plus, just get a Canadian PR for security. I got it.

Bills have come and gone. Not one bill has passed. When you ask politicians in America to remove country quotas on Greencard, they say it is unfair to block other countries. So are these politicians trying to say that what is happening to Indians and Chinese is fair? The fact is that they DON'T CARE. Their philosophy is that let Indians and Chinese suffer! In such a situation if young students from INDIA and CHINA are being advised to come and study, then it is bad advice. To say that they should try PhD and that way will not be in a line is nonsense. This is because earlier a PhD was a Suresh or way to get a Greencard. But these days even PhDs can be rejected. Why should you come to a country where the situation is so uncertain if you are Indian and Chinese. People of other countries just have to do a regular degree and apply for a Greencard and get it. Why should people of India and China try so much harder for no other reason than the were born in those countries? NO HOPE of anything changing here.DON'T WASTE your LIFE IN THIS COUNTRY!!

In 2006, I met someone from Singapore who asked how can he get promoted in the US, a country of superior talent and hard-working employees. After 6 months, he returned to Singapore where the talent was inferior and people didn't work as hard, thus giving him a better chance to be promoted. H1B extension totally depends on end clients(onsite client), client letter or the SOW which specifies the period of project and one gets the no. of years on his/her H1-B extn. But yes, it is very important that one shud apply for his I-140 on the 5th year of his/her H1-B so that s/he gets a priority date which probably take years for GC, but on the basis of I-140 approval notice, you file your H1-B extension for 3 years which and the success rate is high. Like I said it all depends on the documents your receive from end client. If your SOW says project is only for short period say 6 months you may end up getting an approval for only 6 Month. To discuss in detail one can reply to my comment. 👍

For Indian, It was actually true. American dream actually exists. People who went to US in 2000 or before that, they actually earned and saved good money. If They decided to stay in US, at that time it was very much possible to get GC and Citizenship in 5-10 years. Even if they decided to come back to India, they own 3-5 flats and have good investments as in 2000 expenditure in India and US both were less. Point is they are very successful. Now its not even possible to live in city like New Jersey, Boston or California with Family with one person earning. Rent and other expenditures are too high. There are much between opportunities in India to pursue. But I guess worst thing in USA for Indians at this time is Uncertainty. Petition for extension, visa are all getting rejected. You have to pack everything in 2-4 weeks and leave USA.

This person did not talk about green card light option in detail. Once your green card application is approved but actual visa is not available due to 7000 per country limit, you can work indefinately on H1B visa. It is not green card but you can call it green card light because you can do almost everything that a green card holder can do in this country. You can buy property, travel out of country, produce citizens etc.

Since most of my seniors who did mbbs from india and went to usa for post graduation(USMLE residency) very rarely returned back. Canada has opened its doors at the right time. You could have advised the H1B rejectees to apply for Canadian express entry Visa which takes only 6 months and which is not based on lottery system but on objective criterion based scoring. US H1B system is actually making educated children look like voluntary slaves. If its made score based I am sure the universities will find it difficult to enroll foreign students.

Every generation has its own set of issues. In the early 90s going to US itself for studies was a big deal. When students got admitted they used to get their names published in local newspaper 😝There were very few Indians and convincing employers with brown skin and strange accent was a huge challenge. Pretty much no employer had heard of H1B visa and convincing employers to file was a huge problem. There was no PERM, so labor certification used to take years. There was no GC processing portability where you could retain priority dates... There was no H1b portability. No AC 21. No H4 EAD. No 60 days grace period in case of job loss. Call to India was $1.50/min. No Indian grocery store in town. I could go on and on. Getting settled in a new country is always a challenge. Those that are prepared, which most Indian kids who come to US are, eventually do. Every decade there is immigration reform that solves many challenges in the system. One related to GC is due and will happen soon. It would have already happened had there been a different president! So no need to be scared. Be prepared to work hard and things will fall in place! We middle class people r worst hit because we don't have plan b or money to fall back. It becomes still more harder to get job in India. I gained my MS in US, got excellent opportunities throughout and in 5 years made my way as a developer in Facebook. I was a graduate trainee in hcl tech in India, just working on support. My career, learning , money all has been quantum level as compared to in India. If you really want to study and are hardworker, I don’t think any other nation can beat US. Its rightly called Mecca of computer science and I totally agree. H1b can be an obstacle but once you get into a decent American software company, you don’t usually have problems. I haven’t listened to this video but when i see people talking harsh reality in US, it just seems farcical to me. Yeah life is tough, but if you getting rewards for your efforts, every damn hardship is worth it!

I used to make $6500 per month. Out of that, about $1100 were deducted in federal taxes, FICA, state tax and county tax. This was in a small town, Auburn, AL. Even at this pay, you have to save up a lot to raise a family and buy a house. Normal house is about $350k. Before AL, I was in LA. Beautiful life! But, even with a $100k, you can't buy a decent house there. Due to COVID, my company got shut down and I had to return. All my taxes towards social security and medicare (7% of total pay) is gone to the US government. I won't get it back. In a nutshell, I spent 7 years in the US (LA & AL). I saved up decent money but in the end, you are not at peace because you always have to watch your back as we bound by this stupid visa, H1b. Now, I am happily settled in Mumbai, running my family business. No matter how messy is your home, it is your home.

Abhishek Mahale I used work as a mechanical design engineer. Speaking about savings, I won’t disclose that. All I could say is that I have not closed my bank accounts over there. Most of the money I have parked in stock market in the US. So, even after quitting and coming back to India, I do have income in dollars and I spend in rupees. 😁

Its a small world, how asking questions and networking enriches you.........I will explain it later, please bear with me. Sorry to butt in, what is your real motive. Just studies or you see this as a long term endeavor, where you see this a immigration opportunity to settle in a developed economy? If good education is all you want, both Universities are pretty much same level.....and since you have funding take your pick. I would prefer Concordia, as I do not want to commit to Phd so early without knowing much about university, department and funding. Once you land and spend a semester or two then only you get a idea. Other thing is Concordia in Quebec, its French speaking province. With just English you can get by, but its little bit of pain.......those Quebecois, they are pain .....loud and proud people. I love them.....they are my fellow Canadians. Canada is also good option from immigration point of view as well, with degree from Canada and probably some Canadian work experience you can easily get Canadian PR (just a qualifier......based on current immigration laws, things change so do laws, Green Card in US used to piece of cake once upon time, now its not. So just putting it as waiver upfront.) Core Mechanical jobs whether in US or Canada, its little bit of a toughie. Not saying its impossible just saying Mechanical is no IT. On that front pick your poison, whether US or Canada. Wayne will be good from point that, its close to lot of automobile manufacturing and allied industries. Expect tougher fight get H1b sponsored from manufacturing related company......did I mention Mechanical is no IT. Now I shall delve into my very first statement "Its a small world, how asking questions and networking enriches you." So I meet this guy during my Canadian citizenship ceremony, I remember him because it was dead of night we were both at an Ann Arbor gas station, it is freaking cold as hell. Something was wrong with the pumps, would not accept the credit cards. So somehow I manage to pump the gas then he comes over and fills his tank from the same station as mine. We just exchange pleasantries and move one. This was just 3-4 months before my Citizenship ceremony. So cut two, we meet again during the ceremony, as fate would have it, we get scheduled for Citizenship oath on the same day. After the ceremony we chat a little, here is his story in nut shell and I think its a very good and relevant option for you. This is his story, he was doing his MS+Phd in Ann Arbor Michigan, after completing his MS while staying in Michigan he applied Canadian PR. After getting Canadian PR he moved to small town called Windsor (Google Windsor Ontario Canada). Then he was commuting to Ann Arbor to Windsor during his Phd. So he already got his Canadian citizenship completed before he even finished his Phd. This has added advantage, Canada-US have NAFTA treaty which allows Canadians to work in US using TN visa, which has no cap and can be applied anytime at the border, no need to go to US Consulate. Also the manufacturing companies in Michigan, Ohio, Pittsburgh , New York they are more open to TN Visa compared to H1b. Lot of manufacturing companies will straight away say no to H1b, TN visa is something they are willing to give a second thought. This option may look little far fetched to you without stepping into the country yet, but this is totally doable. Good for you is Wayne State is just stone throw away across the border from Windsor. So join Wayne State, get your Canadian PR lined up, move to Windsor get your Canadian citizenship, then you have access to bigger North American job market. Do research on how to get the Canadian PR, its big subject in itself.(Again same qualifiers apply regarding immigration, don't know how he qualified or what stream he applied in for Canadian PR) Every time you talk to people it amazes you and humbles you. I was wondering why the hell I dint think about it when I was doing my Masters.....wow!!! Look at the foresight of this guy. He is thinking years ahead. He knows his situation and knows how to work through it. I am sure along with forethought it took lot of hard work and driving.......but he did great thing keep his options open. Now after Phd, you can go for Eb1 category as well, but you are good 8-10 years away from entering in Eb1 queue. By that time Eb1 will end up becoming like Eb2/Eb3 long line and decades of waiting.
