Good informative video. Thank you. I keep my traps in the window in one of my bathrooms since it tends to be the coolest room in the house. I live in an area where temps are very similar to North Carolina, so it doesn't get too freezing cold. My traps are dormant with the small winter traps, and I keep the water level very low as well (mine are planted in moss).

If your Temps are similar to North Carolina, then put them outside? Guaranteed there not getting enough light
@vontassenfarm4813
@vontassenfarm4813 4 жыл бұрын
@@tylerkrug7719 I'm just hesitant to leave them outside since we do get lots of below freezing temps at night and can get light snow on occasion. I feel way more comfy keeping them inside. They're dormant right now, so their light requirement is fine on the windowsill. I've had these plants three years now. The first year I did not allow them to go dormant and kept them watered and under grow lights. I started out with just one plant and because they multiply so fast, I've been dividing them every summer so they won't get over crowded. Love these plants!

@Aaron_Heininger
@Aaron_Heininger 3 жыл бұрын
I got mine from walmart and think my brother got a near death one for 2 dollars at home depot. All he did was get peat moss and pearl light. He only put it in a jar to as simple way to keep it moist. Me i put mine in a 14 dollar aquarium with two in it. I know i may regret but at the time i didn't know about having to put new soil every year. But worse case if transplanting them become a death threat then I'm just gonna leave them as is and try to figure out other ways to avoid changing the soils.

This is my first time putting these things in dormancy and so far they look exactly like yours so my worries are practically gone.
@WCiossek
@WCiossek Жыл бұрын
@WCiossek One misconception is, that Dionea muscipula need dormancy for thriving. I live in an area , where sunshine is very rare and the winter are very long and very wet with frosts down to -20°C and frequent thaw periods which stresses the plants. Keeping them outside in the winter kills all the plants, because they were smashed from wet ice. We have a lot of rain and I have them outdoors at the end of May until September. It is not enough time to build enough substance. I have this Dionea muscipula since 53 years and made experiments in dormancy, because this plant propagate very strongly. Dormancy under frost free conditions and long winter kills them, because they need a lot of time after spring to rebuild some leaves and four or five months vegetation period is too short and dormancy more than a half year is too long. They get smaller and weaker every year until they die. Another group of plants were cultivated during the winter time under artificial light and a temperature of 25°C about 50 years and these plants are very strong and compact in growth. Without artificial light, the leaves become very broad to catch light as much as possible and the traps becomes very small, but recover faster in the spring than when subjected to hibernation. Heavy rainfall and standing in water for months do not seem to harm it. If the substrate dries a bit, the rhizomes are stimulated to grow vigorously and anchor the plant more firmly in the substrate as the rhizome grows downwards.

When you put Venus fly trap in the fridge do you have to do something similar to acclimating, in fridge for a few hours each day, then after a week or so the plant stays in the fridge all day every day for 3 months, or just put them in the fridge right away and leave them there, no acclimation? (after prepping them of course: changing the soil separating the plants cleaning etc. ) after 3 months can I take the plant out of the fridge, pot it up and no longer put it in the fridge until next winter? Or do I have to gradually acclimate the plant leaving it out of the refrigerator for a few hours each day, then after a week stop putting it in the fridge and keep it all the time out of the fridge? I live in Saskatchewan could the dormancy work on my windowsill ? My windowsill gets a little cold, its a south facing window temperature does not go down to freezing, if yes can I just put it on the windowsill or do I need to acclimate the plant?

Well my problem that I'm concerned with is California it gets cold at night and hot in the day. And that is happening during my winter. Plus my humidity levels are low so i got mine in an aquarium with the peat moss and pearlight mixture. So far they are doing well and are growing nice and green. I've been researching as much as i can so i can keep them for as long as possible till i have to get more.

what would cause deformed leaves( traps). I did not put mine into dormancy, not yet, the way my weather is they will not be outside until june. the plants do not know what month it is, jest light and temp. plus a lot of mine are from a plant that I thought was dead but when I took it out of the pot there were about 8 plants growing along the sides of the pot , so I planted them, and figured it would be best to let them get a chance to grow a little, and they did. I only water them about every 5 or 6 days and I have been feeding one trap about every three or four weeks since November . they get about 14 hours of light a day and the high temp is around 73 and low temp 63. the plants have nice red traps and look better then they ever did , plus my two (death cube plants) are dividing. one of them is the one with the most new growth that is deformed. long ? I know! I could go on but I will not. thanks for the great videos

Thanks for the excellent information. I don't have any at the moment, having lost my one trial plant over winter a couple of years ago. I would like to have a couple but they would need to be in the greenhouse with my masdevallias and draculas, and the humidity is very high in there - 80-99%. The temp is kept to a minimum of 8-10C, but may go up to 18-20C on a sunny winter day, and there's a big fan running 24/7. Would that be too humid, or too warm, for them?
