The English slang term for your description of "PUA" is "negging" although it sounds like the Chinese usage applies more broadly.

That looks a lot like gairaigo in Japanese, where they take a Western word and often assign it some different meaning as well as sometimes make it abbreviated :) For example, sābisu (from "service") may mean that something is free of charge/on the house, bāgen (from "bargain") means a sale in a store, etc.

What I'm understanding from this is if I'm ever talking with a Chinese speaker and they mention talk shows, I should ask to clarify if they mean stand up comedy or if they're talking about "real" talk shows. This is really interesting to me because if you're an english speaker, you might think the geographical and cultural distance between the US or Europe and China is the reason why the loan words have a completely different meaning, but it also happens in languages from countries that are a lot closer to "traditional" english-speaking countries. There are words in my native language that sound like english and I never had a reason to assume otherwise until I got better and realized they're either made up words or the meaning has nothing to do with the original english word. Examples: pressing (dry cleaner), jogging (track suit pants), footing (jogging), smoking (tuxedo/suit and tie), sweat (hoodie), baskets (trainers, sneakers). It made learning English a bit weird but it's really funny when you think about it. Also, Chinese words that use letters like PUA or AA are interesting to me because it's a lot harder to figure out what it means if you're just using an online dictionnary that only gives you the definition of Chinese characters. Could you make more videos about these types of words please?

I would like to add that the official equivalent of AA, in other words, "split the bill ", is 均摊(jun tan)/平摊 (ping tan) , these two can be verbs and nouns. In addition, PUA also has equivalent words to describe the concept, they are informal though, 把妹/泡妹/撩妹 are all the same, but they sound rude, frivolous and disrespectful to girls, don't put them in use in serious situations. As for the last one, to be honest, as a 25 years old Chinese guys, I have never heard of 丁克,maybe I am too old and out of date to catch up the minds of younger generations.

I thought that AA制 usually meant "split the bill evenly". So, if my lunch was $10, and yours was $5, then we would each pay $7.50. But "go Dutch" (or "Dutch treat") usually means that everyone pays their own bill. I thought that in Chinese this would be expressed as 各付各的. Anyways, I guess the best thing is if someone says 我请客. Then there won't be any misunderstandings or hard feelings. :-)
@mountaintag
@mountaintag 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, in a Chinese restaurant, the concept of "Dutch treat" (with everyone paying only for their own order) wouldn't usually work, because dishes are usually shared by everyone. By contrast, in a Western restaurant, the concept of AA制 (splitting the bill equally between everyone) is unusual, because people usually order only their own meals, and there could be big differences in the prices. So there is an interesting cultural difference here.

I think we should AA even on the first date It could be multiple reasons If a man always have to pay it just shows me your time is more valuable than mine and I have to pay for it. Also these days women are far more independent have their own salary. Not like in the traditional way but some women still want to play traditional roles living in the modern life what is not gonna be compatible and fair. Also some women trying to take advantage of the system treat guys like a foodie call or free meal ticket so if you don’t contribute at least a little bit we guys just feel you want to take advantage on us. And it’s not about the money it’s the lack of the gesture 🙂 I hope it’s understandable ladies from a man point of view
