I remember hearing a theory a couple years ago (maybe here on YT) that Sandy is simply a researcher in this anthro universe. Mr. Krabs being so successful in capitalist bikini bottom is a key figure in gaining evidence and samples of undersea behavior, and he collaborates with Sandy in a classified manner for a price. The bikini atoll theory was actually debunked by Alex Bale because in episodes like “Ugh” and “SB-129”, we get a clear view of prehistoric bikini bottom and that these man-like sea creatures have always existed long before the 1940’s.

For example, Squidward was born in 1977 while the series itself starts chronologically in the year 2017 as shown in "SB-129", and he had an ancestral tree. This ancestral tree can be seen in episodes like "Pest of the West" in which we see the Great Grandparents of our modern day characters. Squidward, Patrick, Spongebob, Sandy, and Krabs all having them. They act identical to our current day characters but are their Great Grandparents meaning they were born between the 1700-1800s. Long before the nuclear bomb, thus the theory is completely false.

if you are looking at this through the theories perspective, for the fish, comparitivly, shortly after the nuclear testing would be closer to Ugh time period when they first started to mutate into sentient amthro fish. fish typically live much shorter lives than we humans, (3-10 years depending on species) giving time for them to evolve to the state they are in by modern day. besides, we have proof of them filming the series in world from multiple episodes and specials.

There is a glaring, often ignored flaw in this theory. Where do Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy fit into all of this? Tangentially, they aren't much bigger than the others in the show and are shown to be regular human size, meaning that not only is Sandy, but everybody, colossal compared to their traditional counterparts size.

How could they have been mutated from Bikini Atoll when we see in SB-129, Ugh, The medieval one, The Wild West one, and probably MANY more which was before Humans could have dropped the bombs. Also in some promotional material (Either bonus content on a Disc or commercials I forgot) that says “Scientists have found undersea life and are broadcasting it to teach humanity how to live better.” (That’s the gist of what they said but I forgot what they said word for word.) So TLDR: Bikini Atoll couldn’t have mutated them since we see them before Humans dropped the bombs.
