My old buses the bottom ones I had to drill out, I got lucky with a few as i was increasing the drill size it grab and just unscrew what was left chase it with a tap good as new just needed more door screws. I never notice this was an hour long. Like how you are getting it back on the road as a low dollar project, good example of being creative and using what is available.

I was having the same issues getting door hinges off a 1950 Ford. My impact screw driver was not cutting it, so I made a screw knocker by cutting off the end of an air chisel and welding a screwdriver shaft and hex nut to it. Put that in an air hammer and fire away while turning the nut with a wrench. Makes a lot of noise but worked like a charm. It’s come in handy for several other jobs too. I think the Mustie1 garage might enjoy that addition to the toolbox. 👍

Don`t forget to connect the breather pipe to the engine or lock it on the air filter side, otherwise the air is not dragged through the oil instead of the open pipe, creating an air leak and lean mix... Nice work on the hinge, had similar work on a Fiat 127 nearly 30 yrs ago, the impact thing saved me... Thx for the vid! :-D

For the headliner you could start with heavy paper and small earth magnets. Work in sections if need be and make your pattern on the inside. Magnets would hold your paper as you mark out where to cut the template.

He should have saved the old head liner. Mouse piss and all. I have made lots of head liners. It down right SUCKS to find the owner chucked the original. It takes twice as long making a new head liner with no pattern but yes magnets and craft paper work well.

Good job on the Ghia door hinge, headliner, and oil bath breather. Loved the tap in the drill/driver with cutting oil. Drill selection amazing. Backup on the circular nuts in the door with the vice grip, nice. Exposed wires on the headliner, looked fine, sure beats the smell and look of what was up there, major improvement. The mousepiss and droppings are gone. New naugahyde smell, yay! And paint smell, Yay! Breather conversion Ghia/ Type 2, you had to get some bus part on there didn't you, ha ha. Metal self-tappers, perfect for switcharoo later. Yeah much better the shiny hubcap swapout for the rusty one, and you could see your reflection, nice shot. Spring is coming. Cheers.

I started fixing up a '57 Ford Ranchero right after high school. It was missing it's headliner. Back in the 70's, carpet tiles were popular so, I glued red shag carpet tiles to the ceiling. The adhesive from the factory on them was a joke so I used double sided carpet tape. Worked ok or so I thought. Came back the next day and the tiles were hanging down and falling off all over the place. Contact cement to the rescue. A few years later, I had a '63 bug with the classic roof damage along the edge from rolling iit. No, I didn't do it. More carpet tiles to the rescue. This time, indoor/outdoor and a piece of counter top trim, to make a landau.

I always taught my students that you could use a screw driver for a punch or chisel any time they wanted to with as big a hammer as they liked. There was only one caveat. I call it the "hand hold method". You have to grip the screw driver handle with your four fingers and then place your thumb across the top or head of the handle. Once in this position you can hit it as hard as you like as many times as you like. If that didn't work I would volunteer to swing the hammer myself. I never had any takers. :)

I have a gadget that might help get the headliner sized properly. It comes in a square case with the end sticking out of it so it is easy to pull out. The flexible metal strip has numbers and tic marks along it's length. I bet that if you were to get one of those and lay that out across the inside of the roof, at several places and angles, you might be able to transfer those to your liner fabric and get a closer size estimate. That eliminates the wastage of materials. Watching your project makes me miss my 63 Karmann Ghia. Thanks for the great videos.
@ifga16
@ifga16 5 жыл бұрын
As I did for my Volvo 740 and Plymouth Reliant, I measured from side to side then used the tape to estimate the extra extra material to tuck into the edges. I also used flat sticks to get the depth under the edges. I do like the look of the painted stays on the vinyl. I have a 64 Beetle that is 'in progress' which may benefit from that idea.

As a little tidbit of knowledge for stuck fasteners. At some point in the past I discovered that you can drill a hole in the screw that is the minor diameter of a Torx bit. Hammer that torx bit into the hole you just drilled in the head. Try to pick a Torx that is about 60% the diameter of the fastener you are looking to remove. The deeper you hammer a torx the tighter it becomes as the flutes on a torx are ended with a tapered groove thus it gets effectively bigger. I like to use a Torx that fits a ratchet for this job and then put my Milwaukee 1/4 drive hex impact on it. Set it to low and let it rattle the rust out of it.. This has repeatedly shown to work better than any EZ out or screw extractor. I've used it on screws from #8 all the way up to 1/2 inch bolts. Sure it mars up a Torx bit BUT it's a reasonable cost for getting something out and saving the existing threads. Might also work really well with the hammer driven impact screwdriver. Give it a try at some point. I think you'll like it.

Great idea. I have a set of left hand drill bits and use one slightly smaller than the root diameter of the screw - slightly dull bits seem to work better. They generally will back themselves out before I get all the way through.

two more months till mud season over here .... one month till cabin fever. You could just put in a store-bought headliner, but you live in New Hampshire, you have rolls of material you were saving "because I might need that someday", It's more fun, and when you're done, it'll be unique and probably way more groovy.

Had a 1974 pinto. Doors were huge and way to heavy for the hinges. I carried a 1ft section of 2x4 that served two purposes. It held my seat up where it had rusted thru the floor and also I would put it between the A post and door. Close the door and pull up. It would align the door to allow it to shut for a while, but eventually the door would sag again.
