Thank you, Mustie 1, for caring about your neighbor. For the last four years I have been mowing my neighbor's yard for her when I do mine. She is elderly and has never learned how to start a mower. She was left with no one to help her and I thought, "I hope someone would help my Mom if she were in this same circumstance. It really does me a lot of good to see her smile! Last year when my string trimmer died I told her I would edge and trim again when I could afford a new trimmer. The next day she brought me an Echo SM225 in the box. I told her I would pay her back as soon as I could and she said, "Oh, no. That's your trimmer. I don't know how to use it!"

I’m a bit of a “wrencher” and watch out for my fairly aged widow neighbor and her machinery. She has a power washer that needs to be maintained regularly as she lends it to family and they never help keep it up or use it right. That just consume versus contribute. The service/repair shops tell her she needs stuff which she doesn’t so i work it over each year for her. She watches my pool if I travel for a few days. We’re neighbors in the old way. I've probably watched you pull apart and service a carb more than 50 times now over the years. Despite being somewhat mechanically inclined it was something I would have never touched. These days I think if I was faced with one I wouldn't be too worried about digging into it. The constant stream of knowledge at a relaxing pace is what makes this channel so enjoyable. Thanks again!

Great video!!! I found a missed problem that most people don't even look for with a mower that won't start. Long story short the coil wire connector to the coil was dirty so it wouldn't allow the spark plug to work. Just a few shots of carburetor cleaner on the (exposed) connection was all it took. I had to remove the top housing to get to it but the whole fix was around ten minutes. I bought the parts mower for a few dollars and now it runs like a champ.

I have a Troy Bilt circa 2005 with this same engine. Would run for 2 seconds and shut down. From your other videos i learned how to pull the carb bowl and put it back together. I think the float got jammed closed. Thing still runs great with minimal maintenance over the last 15+ years. Think i paid $200 for it new at a big box. Love your videos!

Like you I've always had a soft spot for the elderly. Most are very kind and sweet. No matter how rotten some are or have been they simply can't do for themselves any longer. Nice quickie clean-up and readjustment. My only observation is that you could've swapped the wheels front to back and vice versa. The old gentleman that owns it would get a better work-out that way. Its amazing how cheap they make mowers anymore. When I was a kid if you bought a new mower in the 1960's you could expect it to last at least 10 years or more. In the 1986 I bought a new store brand mower with a Briggs 4hp engine and it was totally wore out in three years of heavy mowing, The valve guides that were non replaceable were so loose the valves were tilting and loosing compression. My first mower was one I found in the garbage in 1968 that was a 1959 Toro that had a rusty fuel tank that I replaced. It lasted until 1975 and a whole lotta lawns I mowed as a kid making money.

VetteKid Most mowers, especially store brands are made for light to medium household duty. You should get a professionnal grade if used heavily, they're tougher and endlessly repairable. But I must agree, they are made cheapely nowadays. My neighbour bought a new one last year with a Briggs on it. They told him that it would never, ever need an oil change! I asked about it to my local retailer/repair shop and he told me they were a new generation of now "maintenance free" engines but with a strange smile on his face. (!) He said "Tell your friend to change his oil every year as usual..." It says it all !

Bought a Murray mower in about 1975 at a Gambles HW in Wisconsin. Cost $103. Moved to Texas in 1979. Ran it every week during growing season until 2005. That's 30 years. Changed the oil every spring. Went thru 3 sets of wheels. Still started on first pull (ok, maybe second) when i got rid of it. Body was too rusted out to go on.

I'd say that it's the ethanol in the regular gas. I own an almost same Yardman mower, the previous owner had trouble starting it. Did a complete tune-up, clean the carb, plug, synth oil, lube everything AND use premium gas with no ethanol. It starts now at first shot. People just don't maintain their stuff anymore

This is the perfect opportunity for me to say thanks, Mustie. Your small engine rescue videos have given me the confidence to do my own mower service for the first time. I have an 18" push mulching mower that had old unstabilised fuel from the previous season and was overdue an oil change. I drained the tank, removed the carb bowl and cleaned the small amount of crud from it, changed the plug and filter and finally changed the old oil (about 3 seasons). Fresh non-ethanol fuel and it runs really nicely now. The only thing I could not do due to lack of tools was sharpen the blades. So, once again, thanks and +sub

The grinder/flap disk are great ways to sharpen the blade, but an ordinary file will do the trick just as well, just needs a bit more muscle power. RichE

We too took care of our elderly neighbor. After 15 years he passed. We still miss him till today.... And that was over 30 years ago. He was a lonely guy (his wife had passed before we met him) but a really nice man. Korean war Army infantry veteran too. Tough to find great neighbors.

Once again I'm in your debt. Trying to get my old Evinrude 9.5 running for the season. No start. Gave it a little tickle and vroom vroom. Pulled the bowl plug Mustie style and dry. Easy to take top of carb off. Nice and clean but needle stuck up blocking fuel. Just tapped it and it came free. Looked clean so put it back together. Let's squeeze the bulb a few times. Ah, hear fuel gurgling in the bowl now. Let's give her a tug what do you say? Vroom and stays vrooming. Thanks for all the lessons!!!!
