Yeah, I know - no idea why they had Android 5.1 then went back to 4.4??? Very strange indeed - if you look at the Amazon suggestions down the page you'll see other Android TV boxes that do have 5.1 but I guess for now MVPower only has the 4.4 ones... bummer.

+Ivan “molotovgod” Valencia Not necessarily - I mean many of these boxes are made by the same few manufacturers in China - they are bought by companies that then rebrand them and resell them. The main thing is looking at the specs to make sure they have the specs you want. That being said having owned this one and dealt with MVPower, I do feel like they have great customer service. But I would always look for one with Lollipop Android 5.1 and at least 2 GB of RAM and decent memory and/or pre-rooted.

Not exactly, no. You can mirror some things and you can play some things, but it doesn't exactly have Chromecast abilities built into it since it is itself a full functioning Android device.

+Chuck Walters I believe so, though I haven't streamed anything from my phone since the box itself has the full Android OS and can do just about anything your phone can do. The box, of course, needs to be connected to the internet via wifi or ethernet in order to stream data.

+Tom McCarthy Thanks. Probably not much difference in terms of "brand name" - most likely one manufacture who then sells to various companies who brand it. Just make sure you read the specs... You can see four different boxes all marked as MXiii or whatever but each one has different specs.

Great video...I bought the MXlll from Amazon and am still learning to use it. One problem I found was that it played movies using only about 1/3 of my tv screen (LG 3D TV). I tried everything to fix this and no joy. The Android interface uses the full screen.One commenter mentioned some problems he had with KODI and suggested deleting it and reinstalling. Do you recommend this and is it as simple as that?

Yeah, 3rd Party apps can cause issues. Kodi is fairly easily deleted/reinstalled if that's the issue, though depending on the interface/home launcher it's using, that might be a little more complex. If movies through KODI only are causing the issue, then you might want to try it.

Hollywoodfrodo, does this actually play video through Kodi in Hi Def with 5.1 surround sound? I have an older XBMC / Kodi box that seems to only output video in 720p and stereo rather than 1080p and 5.1 So because of that I haven't been using it. I'd be very interested in this if it does do 1080p and 5.1

+Stan Krupowies I know the box supports 1080p and even 4K output resolution as well as 5.1 sound. Can't say with 100% certainty about Kodi itself because I haven't watched a movie via Kodi with 5.1 sound to say... Plus with Kodi if you're watching movies from 3rd party sources, sometimes the video/sound quality isn't what they say it is... But the box itself definitely supports the sound and video quality.

You should be able to attach your own hard drive via usb. I have not tried running an emulator such as dreamcast or psp or others, but considering the processor I wouldn't think there would be an issue.

+Drew Saccucci Yeah, I hear ya. Best that I can tell from my research (having only owned this MXIII) is that MX is a general term used to mean Media Center or Media XBMC or maybe some other Chinese words I don't know. Then the 3/4/5/Q really don't mean a whole lot because each manufacturer decides what to build into THEIR Android MX Box. The one I own/reviewed for example is specifically by MVPower. It is possible that you might find other MXIII boxes by other manufacturers with different specs. So that's the main thing is that you really have to look at the specs individually for each box because there are many different manufacturers making MX Android Boxes and naming them various things as far as the 3,4,5,Q, etc goes.

+Terry Bradford There are other companies selling the MX3 5.1 (If you click the link in description for this product, then look below at "Customers who viewed this also viewed..." you'll see a number of them. I don't know, however, if these others are pre-rooted or not. Even this one wasn't described as being pre-rooted - it wasn't until I got it and started testing it out that I discovered it was. So you might want to email some of the other people selling similar device and ask them if there's comes pre-rooted.

Some of these on ebay are being sold "jailbroken" what exactly are you most likely to get with them that you cant on a normal version? An is it hard to do yourself? Regards MJ

El Blanc "jailbroken" is technically an apple product term but on Android it's called rooting so root or jailbreak would mean the same thing. Whether it's hard or not to do yourself depends on what the company makes available, but it's certainly easier if it's already done. Whether root matters or not just depends on what you want to do. Personally I find the better the device (more memory/ram, faster processor, etc) the less important having root is...

I pretty much would just like to have it for tv channels which you would normally have to pay for and tv programs/netflix etc. Not really for games and things like that. Most all of these boxes are using similar processor chips (cheaper ones) - the main thing to me is look for the most powerful processor, the most built in storage, and the most ram all for the best price. If you're not gaming, then bluetooth is probably not that important. Kodi gives you access to probably most of what you want, but learning how to best use Kodi (Kodi is just an interface - you have to install various platforms and things to get access to stuff) can be a bit of a chore. Since we have full cable with every channel known to mankind I haven't really made much use of Kodi myself other than testing out a few things, but there is a LOT of info out there about it. Read reviews of any box you're considering and if it has mostly good reviews and the higher spec, then go for it.

+GariBaker Although I haven't tried it, I honestly wouldn't expect the AV cord to work for picture at all... Even if it did, it would be BAD picture quality. AV is the oldest/lowest picture quality around. I don't think you'd have a problem getting sound out of the AV slot and the HDMI slot at the same time though if you're just looking for sound, but I haven't tested that so can't say for sure.

Eric, the link you have to Amazon for this box is for a 4.4 KitKat version. Do you know if MVPower is upgrading these units to 5.1 Lollipop? It looks like the version you reviewed is 5.1, so I'm a little confused... Thanks!

+Jim Frisbee Hi Jim - Glad you found my review helpful. Yeah, that is the same one I bought (which also at the time said KitKat 4.4) - it actually came with 5.1. Before I bought it I contacted the company to ask about why it was still on KitKat and at that time they informed me it had actually been upgraded to Lollipop. (I would have assumed they would've updated the Amazon description - however, having sold on Amazon myself several years back, I do know updating product titles isn't as easy as you would think - so maybe that's why they haven't changed it.)

+Jim Frisbee Hey Jim - so I contacted the seller of this because it didn't make sense to me. Apparently, they sold out of 5.1 boxes and then got new boxes that were equipped with 4.4. I would assume they would be immediately upgradeable to 5.1 but I don't know for sure. I'm still trying to get an answer on that. (In the meantime, if you click the link and go to that page you will see at the bottom that other sellers are selling the exact same box already on 5.1 still...)

If you buy this, uninstall their pre-installed KODI and just install it clean otherwise nothing will load correctly, script errors will occur all the time, and weird things happen with it like pausing, video streams get blurry. Aside from that, it does have some decent beefy hardware. But the interface sucks. Whatever the reason, it's difficult to maneuver around the apps as it doesn't scroll sometimes, difficult to go forward and back. Kindle Fire w/KODI is better.
