My 1978 Yamaha XT500

Every time an XT500 has appeared for sale, I have been too late to buy it. When this one appeared in the middle of winter, I bought it without looking at it. Seems to be a pristine 1978 Yamaha XT500 with matching numbers.
I am very happy with the bike! I've replaced a bunch of parts, mostly bolts and nuts and done a lot of electrical work, but there's still a lot left on my wishlist. Would like to change rims and maybe the fork to get disc brakes. But first I of all I want to repaint the tank and get the correct decals. Probably I will replace the side covers and front fender with white ones to get it all white. BUT I have not yet decided if I just keep it in original condition.

i had one of these and i remeber it had gold coloured spokes and wheels and it was black with gold detailing.

I guess l had no idea about what l was really getting when l found my first XT500, 1980 model. Bike was in rough shape, having spent 5 years in a goat pen in west Texas. All l had to do was fix some mouse wire damage and CLEAN the carb and tank. After 12-15 kicks it was running, gotta love electronic ignition. When l found my second XT it had been sitting in the open desert in west Texas for 12+ years. This 1978 model is actually in pretty good shape. Just about all original with a little sun damage to the paint, although the seat cover was shot. Not as easy to get running as the first one but now runs well with a new Mikuni carb. I have since sold the first bike and am keeping the second. Named it PLATA, spanish for silver, Crystal Silver paint. Good job on all that you have done to that bike. Thanks for sharing dear.

Hi Connie, you are some hell of a woman. You could teach us a few things for sure. Gold wheels would look great. Disc's, keep her as close to original as possible, change your style. When you stride her you are going out for fun not racing, when speeding you don't see the beautiful norwegian countryside 😅 Look forward to seeing this seasons videos. We are of to Spain, Portugal, Pyrénées I two weeks for a 7000km roadtrip. Promised the wife some sun after the rain in Norway last year😅😅

😂😂😂 Very sorry about the rain, really, you are ten times more stubborn than me. I rode 1000 km in 2022. I hope you and your wife find the sun this year. I'm afraid your route would be way too hot for me. As for the XT, IF I decide to make any changes I won't do anything irreversible, I've kept all the original parts, every nut is packed away in boxes. And I can always enjoy the country trough the Gopro movies 😊 Thank you very much Tony, and have a nice 2023 season!

I bought an XT 500 in 1978 and drove it from Cologne, Germany 🇩🇪 to Kathmandu, Nepal 🇳🇵. A total of 17,500 km, without any problems. My real goal was to celebrate 🎉 Christmas on the beach in Goa, which I did. In total, I spent 4 years traveling in Asia and Southeast Asia. And I found Jesus. Hallelujah. John 3:16

Flott film! Og en veldig kul sykkel (har selv en 77). Bremsebelegg har mye å si på hvor bra det stopper. Om du ikke finner noe bra så kan du kanskje bestille fra en som lager slikt for historisk racing. Da sender du bare inn de brukte bremseskoene og så monterer han bremsebelegg på de. Trenger ikke koste skjorta, og mye kulere enn en ombygd sykkel.

I reckon you should've ridden the bike after all the work had been done, not earlier on.. Otherwise well done massive job and much appreciated for working on my very first bike, only my one had the chrome sides and black tank on top, which came with golden rims, she was beautiful, it was my first love, I loved it to bits

My XT itime was exactly 40 years ago. This vid was a porno for me, i came 3 times. Now laying in bed for 24/7 since 2015 after a tumor in my back from radiation (German Navy) Would give my legs for 1 year back in 1983. Thx for the video !

@@ConnieTh PS: I rewatched the video now and i think you should mount the SECOND spring for the chain in the motor. The ticking noise comes from the chain, i had one of the 2 springs broken. I sold all i had in Germany and have a small ranch now in Poland. You know what ... im crazy ... i will buy the next XT i can find over here, ( a black and white) and will place her in my room !
