Giving a lot of high star ratings to me is a sign that you know what you like and you're good at picking your reading. ^^

Completely agree with this! If I think I'm gonna rate a book less than 3 stars I will not finish it, and I'll move on with my life; so my ratings skew quite high as well

On the other side I was confused when Hannah said "I didn't like this book" but she gave it a 3 star rating. If I don't like a book, it gets 1 star, maybe 2 if there are some aspects I enjoyed. For me 5 stars are reserved for my all time favourite books, so I just can't hand out 5 stars left and right :D It's very interesting to me to see all these different "philosophies" in rating. It shows that it's not just about different tastes in books but also different "explainations" for ratings. Super interesting to me :)

I'm also quite strict with giving out high ratings, so my average is lower. I DNF with wild abandon 😅 but sometimes I still want to finish a book that is not really working for me because there is still something to gain I feel. And I like to push myself to read outside of my favourite genres and types of books, which also sometimes results in lower ratings. I am more likely to DNF a fantasy or scifi book because I know those genres much better and can quickly decide if something is not for me.

I feel like judging people for a high average rating really only applies to people who read to review books. We tend to read significantly more books (than your average person), and we also tend to read a lot of books that are new (ARCs often influence this). While we try to pick books that we will enjoy based on genre/subgenre/tropes the books we pick up aren't necessarily all going to be winners. Folks who read as a hobby and can be more discerning with what the pick up (i.e. reading more backlist (old/paperback)) can have a higher average rating because you often are getting recommended/picking up the books that reviewers/awards/the industry deemed as good. Reviewers' average rating is usually closer to 3 because most of the books we read are... fine? They do what they are meant to, they don't really blow us away, sometimes they are new authors who we can see the potential in but their first book isn't their best work (this is often the case and not a bad thing at all, I think Mistborn is somewhere in the double digits for Sanderson for instance). If I was looking for a reviewer and I saw that they read primarily ARC/new books and had a high average rating it would be concerning to me, because it would not feel like they are thinking very critically about the books that they are reading and that's what I value in a good review, someone willing to lay down the positives and the negatives of a book. There have been negative reviews by good reviewers that have made me pick up a book. However, for the general public/people who are reading for enjoyment and entertainment, you guys should have higher average ratings. Hopefully, if we have done our jobs properly, we have found the great books to pass along to you guys and even the books that we deem as perfectly fine, passable, definitely a book, you are able to tell if it is for you based on our discussion of the pros and cons. I hope that all makes sense? Not every person who talks about books or even who give reviews of books is a reviewer and it's perfectly fine to be the type of content creator who wants to share the great books and why you loved them, they just have different expectations.

To me the star rating conversation makes me think about how I see part of reading as being adventurous and trying new things, so I think having a consistently high reading maybe shows you’re not branching out of your comfort zone so much. (Which like you said could be good! I like how you just want to read for pleasure. I still think a bit about the idea of being “well read”.)

Loved this! My rating has gone up over the last couple of years, not because my initial choices are any different but I just have a lower tolerance for books I’m not enjoying. There are countless books out there that I will never read but would probably love, so I don’t want to waste time reading books I’m not enjoying. If I’ve put it down before 50% I don’t give it a rating. It doesn’t mean it’s a bad book, just not for me

My most common rating is 4! 5 is for "books I want to tell other people to read" and 3 is "a book was read". I do tend to have more 2s bc I hold out for fave authors to turn it around and impress me or so I can tell other people exactly why a popular book is actually not good lol

Interesting! I generally only reserve 5 stars to books which truly blew me away and which I would consider a favorite book. So my ratings are generally a bit lower than yours. I also had a very good reading year last year, so I set my goal to finishing 24 books this year to keep up the good habit. I also have a goal of finishing a book I'm "currently reading" for each new book I read. I have a tendency to read half a book, getting distracted by some new book and then not returning to the half-finished one, even though I actually enjoyed the book! So that will also boost the number of finished books this year

I honestly love the stats you get from Storygraph! In 2024 I read 340 books (put my goal as 336) but one thing I do to get the extra bursts of dopamine is I up my goal by 12 so I get to meet it more often and get the dopamine from meeting my goals, so right now my goal is 36 but that will change shortly I'm sure. I don't really pay attention to ratings because I am too indecisive to rate books myself and so that has never really featured into my thought process, I mainly just get recommendations off my friends.

I definitely need to change over my goodreads stats to storygraph! Love these data videos :3 I'm very stingy with my 5 star ratings haha 5 stars = I loved it and guss about it if it came up in conversation 4 stars = it's a solid good read enjoyed it 3 stars = Interesting enough not to DNF but not suuuper enticing 1-2 stars = not for me /awful /DNF'd 😅 I do think rating your books a bit harsher you'll get a more accurate picture of what kind of books you like reading, but I'm also just getting into reading so I don't really know what my taste is... so rating honestly helps me out :)

On star rating - I think it depends on if/how much someone dnf's. If they dnf a lot and have a high average rating, then they're probably a pretty good judge of what's good. If they don't dnf a lot and still give a lot of 5 stars, then maybe I wouldn't trust their taste as much. As with so many things it's all about the ✨ nuance ✨

I think for me it's like, my all time favourite books are 5 stars, because they are my favourites. So I can't give lots and lots of books 5 stars, because I don't like them as much as my all time favourites. Which means for me a really good book I enjoyed would be 4 stars, if its especially good but doesn't join the ranks of favourites, it's 4,5. So 3 stars would be an okay read, nice enough, like a light summer holiday book that I enjoy reading but won't even remember in half a year. That would be 3 stars for me. I was confused when Hannah says about a book in this video "Yeah, I didn't like that one, it wasn't for me" and the rating showed 3 stars. If I say "I didn't like that book" that would be max. 2 stars for me, maybe just 1. Just a different perspective on personal ratings :)

I read barely any books last year and honestly didn’t really enjoy the ones I did read. I just couldn’t get into reading anything even with series where I’ve devoured all the previous books. It was a bad reading year. In fact 2022-2024, I read less than 20 books total. Normally before that, I would read at least one a week (so 52 total) without even trying. I don’t know what’s been happening but I just couldn’t get into a book anymore. It’s been pretty emotionally difficult actually and I even spoke to my therapist about it like worried I’ve broken my ability to concentrate or ability to enjoy old hobbies or something. I got my library’s app at the end of last year, thinking if I keep not being able to finishing books, at least I’m not paying fot them. On 29th December, I listened to an audiobook for the first time ever via that app. I’ve already got through more books this year by listening than I got through in the whole of last year. Still not really reading paperbooks or ebooks, but I really love audiobooks and feel so happy to be able to enjoy books again!!

Ohhhh I love some book rant and discussion. Regarding your vs TS's pace, yes, your "vote" counts towards an average. Moods and such are a bit more complicated I think, librarians have to request changes (user's contributions help fill out any missing pieces, so readers can always improve the platform). As for ratings, it is tremendously personal. GR has "descriptions" on their star system, but I prefer to tweak them to my own preferences, but the thing is, that evolves! Now, I try to give 5 stars to ones I would love to re-read, or where I found a certain closeness/identification with characters, something that transcends a nice reading experience. Then anything lower than 3 is when I start to have issues with the writing style or the story (it can be beautifully written and plot problems, or great plot but questionable style and my rat brain wants to finish them!) Younger me gave 5 stars to books that, looking back, were probably NOT "5* worthy", but it's nice to see the evolution of that too. Also, I am working on DNF-ing more books, cause if I have too many
@morehannah

Heheh I tend to be more on the side of the tiktokker you mentioned but it definitely depends on some factors. For starters everyone's star ratings mean different things to them. For example you said in this video "I didn't like the secret history" even though you gave it 3 stars. For me, 3 stars means I DID like a book. I think a lot of people are divided on this--3 is a bad rating for some and a good rating for others. So that context matters. And then the other factor that I think is important is why people read books. Some people are only reading for personal enjoyment in which case sure they probably have niche types of books they love and only pick those up. But if I'm following someone on booktube who is reading at least partially for the sake of reviewing and creating content then I am not going to get much out of their videos if they only give books 5 stars. I want the people I follow to engage more critically with what they read and I also want them to read widely, which means stepping out of comfort zones and picking up things that sometimes they will inevitably not enjoy

Im definitely on team 3 stars is bad lol i also would never rate anything lower than 3 unless it is truly and completely awful and most of the time that would be on a book i DNF. It feels like a lot of the time people wont rate DNFs (at least i barely see any ratings from people who DNFd) but i feel like its such useful info that helps give a wayyy more accurate representation of what to expect from a book or series.

I have always felt that People who set (and especially people who hit) extremely high reading number goals honestly just take all the joy out of the reading. its no longer about reading but hitting the number which just totally defeats the purpose... it feeds in to the culture of overconsumption and individualistic competition that leaves a bad Taste in my mouth. I am very happy to see people with reasonable goals particularly when they specifically voice their reason as wanting to actually enjoy the books and take their time with them
@elieska
@elieska 7 сағат бұрын
@@danniemorris7423 I see what you mean. However I know form experience that is also for a big part is a choice. Where do you spend your time on? How much screen vs reading time? For me personally I noticed this over the years at least. For years I didn't see how I could read more than 20 books in a year. The last to years I read 30-40 books a year. And suddenly 50 also seems feasible. Important to remember though that books vary widely in lenght, like Hannah said: audio books ranging from 8h-65h.... All count as one book. So the amount of books doesn't say it all (when pages or hours are not shown).

13:07 I don’t rate my books at all when I do my reading-at some point I realized I didn’t like determining 4 versus 5 or lower stars on books I generally enjoyed and I found it stressful so I just stopped ranking. My evaluation also changes a lot depending on type of book-for mystery I’m generally thinking is is holding my attention has twists etc, but for something like nonfiction I’m more concerned if I’m learning new things, finding the topic interesting so it’s hard to rank those against each other. Generally I just focus on is it interesting enough to continue or am I hating it and want to quit-then later when I think back I might more or less consider something 5 stars.

My rating of a book does not necessarily mean how much I enjoyed. I can enjoy book, but think that the writing is not the most brilliant or that some parts are missing something. So I usually have like three five star books a year. Five star book is a masterpiece, a book that I would recommend to everyone. So I have average about 3.5 because 3 star book is an OK book, that I enjoyed, but I think it is average. Maybe a romance, that does not have any significance and I will not remember it two months later, but I really enjoyed it at the moment. Does it make sense?

It's so fascinating to me reading all these comments where rating something a 3 means you didn't like it! In my head, a 1-2 star rating are books i dislike but i dnf a lot so i dont have many of those. 3 out of 5 is a passing grade to me and so it means i liked a book but didnt love it, where i enjoyed enough of aspects of the story to be compelled to finish it but i also saw significant flaws. 3 is not bad! 4 is really good, i recommend. And 5 is perfection, A+ grade, no notes. For me, that means a true 5 is really rare. And i feel like thats accurate to the bell curve of life - perfection should be hard to find but that makes it extra exciting. So i guess i am like that tiktoker and I am quite skeptical of 5 being your most common rating! 😂

This year one of my goals for reading (& music) is to branch out more & try things out of my comfort zone. So I am anticipating the star rating to be a bit lower. I will still dnf if I don't like it. I'm not gonna force myself to finish. This year I'm doing the alphabet challenge & currently am reading Dracula for the D pick. Carmilla (reread. As a child I read even more than that, but bc of school and college and all that I kinda lost my joy in reading and since I've had a stable job now for a few years it's been creeping up again, so even do I don't necessarily need to be reading this much (my goal was 36) I still love it, because it's a good sign for me. Rating books is so subjective anyway, you have to measure what you want to measure. My rating system assumes most books in the world are average: 3 stars. Some are better and some are worse, so if my average rating is around a 3 that means I've read a lot of really normal, average books. If it's higher than 3 stars then I've read a lot of books that I think are better than average. But I can also choose to only read books that I think are better than average; I don't because I find reading average and not great stuff helps me remember why the really good stuff is so good to me. And I think there is nothing wrong with a book being 3 stars. But that system works for me, it's not for everyone and that is fine.

For rating, 5 star reads are books I'd be willing to buy (as a renter this is a pretty exclusive club because moving books is heavy work and space is at a premium in my HCOL area), 4 stars are things I really liked, and 3 stars is my "you are a book, you exist, and I read you" category. You have to really offend or irritate me to get lower than a 3 😂

These stats made me download Storygraph so I suppose you succeeded Hannah! What I loved is that I could juts import everything easily from GR AND I could still get my 2024 wrapped. My gf asked me to do the same for her so she will be another convert I guess. I think I will keep my account on GR just in case but delete the app and stop using it as after one hour I like Storygraph much more. The only thing holding me back was that I thought I will have to add over a thousand books manually - it was not the case. I was also concerned that maybe they do not have such a big polish library (I am Polish so even if most of books I read are famous enough to be translated I still read quite a lot of polish authors, especially non fiction) but everything was imported even if book didn’t exist yet so I guess I will be spreading a word about polish literature cross Storygraph.

As a new reader this year my average rating is 4.74. I think if your job is to read, or if you never DNF a book then yeah have a 3 average. But if you are in it to read things you enjoy and topics you are curious about then why wouldn't it be higher. So, on the same page with you!

Ooooo see I think people may be inclined to think that a high-star rating is very narrow-minded, you only read what you know and love and don't broaden your perspective or take risks and read things that may be controversial and out of your comfort zone. But like... you don't have to? Read for pleasure, escape, joy. Read to learn, push boundaries, explore. Reading can span daaaaays, weeks of your time, it's not a quick movie that's over and done with, they're such an investment so get out of it what you need.

I agree with you on the star rating. I like mine to be above 4 and if it’s below it’s usually because I’ve read books I was meh about or didn’t like. Mine’s also high because if I’m getting the vibe that something will probably fall below a 3 star (unless it’s a silly goofy time or I’m reading it for a purpose) I’ll usually just DNF it.

Hoping to read and enjoy even more books this year, and it's going well so far :D

I love Storygraph sooo much 🙌 This year I did a career change and started working at my local library 🎉 so I've set myself a 50 book reading goal (my first reading goal I've set) and so far I'm tracking ahead! I have also joined a local book club but not sure if they will be reading books that I will really want to read or not 😅 I don't like wasting my time when I have books I actually really want to read with an ever growing tbr 🙈 I'm thinking about resurrecting my bookstagram but imposter syndrome is definitely getting in my way there 🥲

@@hollymcgrady859 I have never really understood why or how this happens so often with series lol where the order actually makes more sense when read differently than release date.. Is it bc the editing team loses track of some plot points over the writing and editing process because they are too close to the work (a cant see the forest for the tress type thing) or something else entirely..? IDK but i personally avoid any series like that because it just feels like too many options 😬
@hollymcgrady859

I didn’t realise there was a different order until I’d already read them by release date, and while I was reading them I did find the order odd- went from a very fast paced action situation (the longest of the series too) back to a shorter story that felt more like the rest of the series had, then to something that directly followed on from the events of the longer one. It did feel out of place at the time, but I understand from a writing perspective maybe wanting to take a break and go back to something a bit more chill before carrying on with the more dramatic stuff y’know? 😅 it did feel more like taking a breather than them losing track of things though- I’m debating a reread to see how much of a difference the order change actually makes too. 😁

"3 stars, yeah I didn't like it" This blows my mind. For me 2 stars is a yeah it was fine I enjoyed it. 3 stars, was a solid enjoyed read. 4 is a damn good book and 5 is reserved for the best of the best. My average is 3 star reads. Of 50 in 2024 7 got 4 stars and only 1 got 5 stars. I forgot to rate 8 but at a glance I can see they were all 2 or 3 stars. Some more enjoyable than others. And 2 DNFs

To me I rate most things 3-4, to me a 5 star has to be something special, or near perfect. I do find it odd to hear people give a list of complaints about a book they’ve read, but still give it 5 stars. Or to give the most generic, it was nice, review and still give it a 5 stars. If I look at someone’s average rating and they only rate between 3-5 stars, then I take that as a 3 point system and presume that they didn’t like the 3 star books. Maybe I just have a hypercritical brain, but I just don’t understand how it’s possible to love everything you consume. I do the same thing with tv or film sites. And to be fair, I also do this with people who only use the lower end, rating things between 1-3 stars only. I then just view their 3 stars the same way I’d view a 5 star.

I guess it's all about how you use the rating. For me 5 ⭐ is only for books that I will remember for years and want all my friends to read as well. That's kinda rare haha, so I'm not aiming for 5 ⭐ reviews only. And 3 ⭐ for me always used to be ' was okay, finished it, not bad, not special' but then 2 years back I started reading more light and easygoing books to relax and I introduced the 3.5 ⭐ for all the fun and light chick-lit romcom like books that I enjoyed. So my average rating has dropped over the last year, but that is more because I allowed myself to read more 'simple' books and less pretentious literary potential-5 ⭐ reads.

I think you're reading books that are a little darker, not fully dark but not completely lighthearted either, bc my mood map looks completely different lmao, in that it's basically a straight line that's completely green, while yours is a gradient between green and yellow Also I agree with wanting my average rating to be above 4 stars lmao, bc I use Goodread's star values, so a 3 star is a "I liked it" book, which is fine, but to me it means I had a good time or I enjoyed it but it didn't blow my mind, 4 stars is "I really liked it" and 5 stars is "it was amazing" (2 stars is "it was ok" and 1 is "did not like it"). So while I've become harsher giving 5 stars ratings, I also dont agree with that tiktok you mentioned it, bc I also think we're on an age where everyone thinks they're a critic, so I think saying "I don't trust you if your average is avobe 3.5" is like...either you're reading books you're not enjoying, or you're being overly harsh on books in general, and I don't think either are great. I read for fun, and I'll give joy how I can, and if that's giving 4 or 5 stars to a book that brought me great joy, so be it

I love the Storygraph. I never thought I'd be so interested in graphs and charts lol In regards to ratings, I think they can be so subjective. They don't mean the same things from one person to the next. I keep track of my ratings, but I don't really look at average ratings before picking up a new book. I also think, while helpful and valid for individuals enjoyment, that DNFing skewes the results. If you DNFd, it means you didn't like the book. But then refusing to rate it because you didn't finish it means that only people who love it are rating it, and highly. So a book can have a 5 star average rating, but only 3 people liked it, and 100 people DNFd it. Long story short, I don't trust ratings lol

I tend to have a star rating around the 3.5-3.75 area. But I rate a book 3 stars if I liked it but didn’t love it so a lot of books end up in 3 stars. I read 102 books last year and only 8 were 5 stars so I guess I’m stingy with my 5 star ratings.

Oh and for the ratings, I try not to base any conclusions on it, like that it's only a good reading year if my average rating is a certain number, bc I don't want that to be my focus. But also I think rating systems are quite personal and different for everyone. For me a 5-star is phenomenal/outstanding/nostalgic/amazing. A 4-star is very good and something I loved. A 3-star book I like and is enjoyable. A 2-star is meh and a 1-star I actively dislike (don't have a lot of those, if that happens I DNF most of the time). So an average of 3,5 would still be pretty good I'd say, maybe I would start questioning things if it got below a 3.

The story graph said I take an average of 11 days to read a book and for me also I think it’s longer because I’m reading multiple books in different formats, plus there were a few that I had to return to the library and waiiiiiiiit until they were available again. That all skewed my stats, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

i did my own genre and author tags this year bc a) i want to know how many female, male, trans, and poc authors i read and b) i hate that sg stats count multiple genres per book. this way i can see (for example) that i read x number of lgbtq books and know that they are ALL ones i considered to have sexuality as the main topic, not like a fantasy that happened to have an lgbtq character, for example.

I don’t really pay attention to my stats apart from how many I read in a year. With star ratings I tend to just rank how much I enjoyed it because that’s different to whether I think it’s a good book. I read one that was highly acclaimed, objectively well written but really not my taste so I didn’t rank it as highly as one that was simpler, less original but that I enjoyed reading a lot more. I started the Murderbot book after seeing you read it but really couldn’t get into it so have dnfed for now but the ratings for that are really high so I guess it’s just not my thing

Personally it's less about someone with a really high average rating and more about a) do they ONLY have high rated books (exclusively 4/5 stars) AND b) how many books do they read. If someone only has 4/5 stars but reads fewer books per year - I assume they are just more selective in picking their reads. However if they read a lot and still only have 4/5 stars, then I find it harder to take their recommendation. Either way, if someone only has high ratings the issue actually becomes that I don't know what they do and don't enjoy so it's very hard to use that info to figure out if I'll enjoy the book.

RE not trusting people who only rate books highly - I personally am the same as Hannah and want my ratings to be as high as possible because it means I'm reading stuff I like. It's a hobby, and I do it for fun. I will DNF a book if I am not enjoying it bc there's no point in not enjoying my hobbies. Therefore, I will judge a person based on their average book rating, but only make a full judgement once I know their stance on DNFing books, and why they read. If a person reads for school, or for research of some kind, then its likely they will not enjoy every book, and so a lower rating makes more sense to me. Although I happily DNF, it does make it hard for me to talk about books I didn't like, and why I didn't like them because I don't finish them, so don't really have much of a leg to stand on to be detailed in my criticism other than "not my vibe"

I think rating books is entirely subjective and you shouldn’t worry about a books average score, it really means nothing to you since you don’t know the parameters others are rating by and how that correlates to yourself. For me, an averagely entertaining book is a 3, then I scale down/up from there. Someone might think my average score being below 4 means I don’t enjoy what I’m reading but I am! I just measure my enjoyment differently than someone else does.

Only truly exceptional books get rated 5 stars, the ones I can't stop thinking about and are well written. 4 stars is I enjoyed the book, but I'll probably never want to re-read it. 3 stars is for it was fine but it was missing something. 2 stars is for really not good. 1 star so terrible I don't know how it got published.

I would be so sad if my average rating went below 4! I *do* give some books lower ratings when I feel they didn't live up to my expectations or what they set out to do. But overall, if I'm not enjoying a book, I want to DNF it instead of push through.
