Thank you for sharing this! I know how hard it is talking about acne. I used to feel so bad about the way I looked. I was on Isotretinoin in my first year of med school. Best drug I've ever taken for sure - but the dry lips ain't the one lol!

As a medical student, what do you think about the psychiatric effects of Accutane? I'm genuinely interested. I got depression from Accutane - the effects on the brain are far more profound than I realised.
@DrEzgiOzcan7 жыл бұрын
Hi Will, I’m a doctor now 😊 it’s difficult to say. Every medication has its side effects that we have to consider before taking it, even simple pain killers. Depression is a grey area as it’s environmental and genetic factors that contribute to it. I’d be dishonest if I said I knew the exact effects of accutane on the brain, one thing I do know is that there isn’t solid experimental data to prove the pathophysiology between the two
@willreid3817 жыл бұрын
Oh, congratulations! Yeah it is difficult and I recognise that depresison has many causes. There is some experimental data showing biological plausability. Isotretinoin disrupts the structure of dopamine receptors and decreases dopaminergic activity, which is associated with depression. It also increases expression of 5-HT1A receptors in the pre-synaptic neuron, which inhibit serotonin secretion.Isotretinoin also directly and indirectly increases the translation of the serotonin transporter protein leading to increased reuptake and consequently reduced synaptic availability of serotonin. These serotonergic & dopaminergic effects are the exact opposite of SSRIs/DRIs like wellbutrin. Isotretinoin also inhibits hippocampal neurogenesis which may well play a role in depression. You might find this sysmematic review interesting, I certainly did: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3276716/

I have been on accutane for two months and have experienced mood changes. I’m very mellow, quiet at times, get sad sometimes for no reason or irritated and some aggression, i even caught myself not really caring about anything which i didn’t have when i wasn’t on accutane. I was always happy, outgoing, enjoyed life in general. Don’t get me wrong it’s nothing i can’t control but definitely have notice changes in mood

I also took accutane back in 2017 after trying all possible treatments just like what you did. And also like you, i have PCOS. Accutane is really life changing when it comes to dealing with acne. However, does it affect future pregnancies or the ability to get pregnant? 🤔
