Ideally when you place engine flush in the engine you should always dump a cheap oil in there after to "wash out" the remnants of the flush. It thins out the oil!

Before you go through with a replacement diff, I’d recommend changing the fluid again and using the genuine Bmw fluid as they have friction modifiers and can usually cure the slight clunks and grinds these diffs like to do.
@MEchanicAL_LSTAR11 ай бұрын
Small note for you guys. When you take the oil cap off don’t lay it upside down, the oil gets under the seal ring and then causes the seal to fail and you’ll start seeing oil seeping out around your cap. Also don’t leave tools on the engine, may scratch the plastic covers or knock your tool deeper into the engine.

Ideally you want to open the fill plug of the diff before the drain plug, because you might not be able to open it later but the diff will have already been drained
@gabrielgordon910411 ай бұрын
The two plugs that are covered in soot are a sign of leaking injectors (common problem on the n54 engine). On my second n54 so know this all too well! Edit: don't know if you will se this but would also add that the very dirty exhaust tips are also a sign. Worth getting checked as fuel will be leaking down past the rings and diluting the oil

I do believe the differential clunk is like that from factory. It was a known trait of the E46 M3 differential because it was such a chunky differential, and I'm pretty sure the 1M uses the E46 M3 differential as well. My friends E46 M3 had that clunk at low speed directional changes and it was normal. Do check with some BMW experts, but I think they may say the same.
@nickb-11 ай бұрын
I'll be watching this series with great interest. My 1M only has 40,000 km on the clock but the differential groans when going slowly around corners or in car parks. I've tried the BMW Diff fluid with FM Booster several times, but it doesn't fix the issue. Am starting to think that a diff rebuild or replacement is the only solution.

A lovely little car that is in the right hands for a little TLC. In terms of mileage, it should be good for another 40K if it's not tortured around the Nürburgring at any time in the future. If the engine fails, all is not lost as I have witnessed many 6 cylinders reborn into fire breathing monsters. Great video and I look forward to further M1 content my friend. Thumbs as always!

With regards to the diff clunk its possible it could just be bad diff bushing. The car is older so the rubber may be deteriorating. Most shops will just say you need a new diff so they can make more money off you. Try replacing the bushings first.

Great video Tim 👍 What difference do you find with the BMC air filters compared to standard?
@rustler0811 ай бұрын
It really depends on the car, but usually it only adds the ability to clean the filters as a benefit. You usually won't feel the power difference (if there even is one. Sometimes it goes down), it often decreases filtration, and in some cases the OEM filter's pleat design smooths turbulent air while the aftermarket doesn't. If this is the case you get surging and stumbling as the MAF struggles to read the turbulent air.

Not so smart of the mechanic to use high-pressure air to blow away the dirt from the air-intake housing. He should have used a vacuum cleaner to suck out the dirt. Now there's a big change the dirt has partially gone into the air-intake manifold of the engine and so into the engine. So better change your oil soon again to minimise the crap in your engine.

I know the water pump failed 2 days before my new car was delivered, but i suspect the clutch went and at £1500+ it was worth more than the car. A shame as it was well maintained.
