I saw a tiny part on the floor, didn't know what it was, went to work and found my battery was dead when I got off. got a jump start, figured the 4 yr old battery was dead, bought a new one, put it in, then just happened to walk behind the car, brake lights on! I had a customer insist that he had to violently yank the steering wheel from side to side on his Camry in order to turn the key. He habitually held tension on the wheel when he shut it off causing the key lock to be on a bind when the engine stopped. It was the loose nut behind the wheel preventing him from starting his car. It's amazing the rituals people will perform when they don't know how a car works.

Did a "Money Light"/rough running diag on a Nissan serveral years ago. Easy fix, worn plugs, one bad coil, IIRC. Also cleaned a gunked up throttle body for him, just because it needed to be done. When the customer picked it up, the first thing he did when he started the car was to floor the throttle. So, for 10 or 12 seconds, his cold engine was screaming away, bouncing off the limiter. Apparently, he liked what he heard, so just drove off calmly. 6500 rpms or so, on a cold engine? I hope that was not his normal start up ritual.

Eric O, I appreciate your videos and yours is one of the two automotive channels I watch regularly. I hope you can find time to respond to a question. Sorry that it isn't related to this video but I don't know another way to contact you. I supervise a small vessel fleet for a research institution and we launch boats every day in salt water. I've seen two schools of thought on greasing the trailer hubs (all my trailers have bearing buddies). I deal with three dual and three single axle trailers. My ramp is steep and the wheels are completely submerged during vessel launch/ recovery. Not sure how many saltwater-use trailers you deal with, but I know you deal with salt. 1- Grease the hubs every time, keep them packed full. 2- Don't pack them full every time, as you run the risk of "churning" the grease (not sure what that means but have read it on forums) or blowing out the inner seals. I have been repacking after every use, and almost every time I can force emulsified grease (water contaminated) or water out of the weep hole on at least one hub. Thanks in advance if you find time to respond, and if not, thanks a ton for the work you put into your videos. I'm also gonna submit this question to Rainman Ray for his take down in Florida, as I'm pretty sure he has done some trailer work down that way.

There are a lot of folks out there who never read the owners manual, ever. Those few who do usually refer to it after its too late to know how things function. Then there are those few who will sit back a few nights home from work and read the manual to learn what does what and how to use the darn thing. I always recommend people read the book first or at least skim read it because there's going to be something in there they will need to know or want to know about at some point plus, they will likely find some features they never knew the vehicle had.

I had a Toyota repair that had a similar problem. This was a family car, so I thought I would pull the switch apart and inspect the contacts under a stereo microscope. After seeing the contacts had some pitting and corrosion I thought I would refurbish the switch contacts, treat with Deoxit D100 fluid, reassemble the switch, install in the vehicle and see how long the switch would last. The switch was not available at the dealer, but they could get it in rather quickly. So, I though I could make the switch work for at least a couple of weeks. I did my best at reconditioning the contacts with progressively small grit emery cloth, rinsing with Deoxit D5, and then a polish with the connector pin cleaning swab. Then I treated the switch contacts with Deoxit D100 fluid. Under the stereo zoom microscope you can clearly see the contact surface(s) and how it changes as you clean it up. When I installed the switch in the vehicle I sprayed the connector contacts with Deoxit D5 spray. I thought the brake switch would fail rather quickly after my reconditioning so I spent some time in the vehicle cycling the brake and trying the shifter, and it never failed. It has been four years now since the switch recondition and it still has not failed. I am not affiliated with Caig Laboratories (the maker of Deoxit) but in my experience the product works very well.

Another reason to keep your hand off the pedal when installing those self adjust switches, If you push the brake pedal down enough you could block the transfer ports in the master cylinder and at the same time cause the brakes to drag due to the pedal being pressed down slightly, that can cause the brakes to lock up when they heat up and the expanding fluid has no place to go.

I would also recommend knowing where the key fob override is if the battery dies in it. Steering column, center console etc

Good call Mr. O!!! That’s from years and years of experience right there! I love your reverse psychology for NAPa. You don’t want them to sponsor you. Lol! That’s one way to get their attention. Lol!! Good luck with that! Keep the good work! Don’t quit your day job the beatboxing. Lol!!!

Funny story - my wife and I saw an older convertible with 'opposite' brake lights. They were ON while he was driving, and OFF when he applied the brakes. When I tried telling him about it, the older gentleman said, 'Sonny, I think you're crazy.' LOL. He got out of his car and took a look, while my wife sat in his car and applied the brakes. He finally understood the problem.

As soon as I saw the video title I thought "...is it a Pontiac?" lol During my OJT we had an oil change turn into a shifter replacement on a Pontiac G6, because it wouldn't shift out of Park once it was there, and took a whole lot of work to get it there. One of the two switches in the interlock failed (the "brake checker"), and it was cheaper to buy the whole shifter from GM than the one switch from NAPA. The head tech at that shop used to work for GM and mentioned it was a huge issue for basically all of their sedans from the late 2000s and early 2010s.
